Big Boy 4014, arrives at Laramie WY It is now the largest, heaviest, and most powerful operational steam locomotive in the world. Well done to Union Pacific for doing what no one though would happen, a Big Boy running under is own power again. PS. In case you are wondering about the words"Big Boy" in chalk on the front, apparently the class series originally was to have been called the "Wasatch". One day, however, while one of the engines was being built, an unknown worker scrawled "Big Boy" in chalk on its front. With that, the legendary name was born and has stuck ever since. |

4014 is Big, Bad, and will remain the most powerful steam loco until an Allegheny 2-6-6-6 is restored to operation and so far the Beast from the East is only a dream. UP should be real proud. The T1 Trust, PRR T1 Class 4-4-4-4 #5550, 1 of America's First HST's |

I suspect that our steam engine which is has been in a Nashville park, and is now being restored, will be the biggest and the most powerful. |

FWIW, it is big and powerful, but a shadow of the Big Boy https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NC%26StL_576 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Union_Pacific_Big_Boy and lest we forget the Allegheny https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/2-6-6-6 |

Yep, never forget the Lima H8 Allegheny 2-6-6-6 at 7300hp was the most powerful steam loco ever designed. The T1 Trust, PRR T1 Class 4-4-4-4 #5550, 1 of America's First HST's |

until an Allegheny 2-6-6-6 is restored to operation I think that is a far of if not impossible dream. CSX do not have the same history of restoring or running steam. UP had 8 Big Boys to choose from when they decided to restore one. There are apparently only 2 Allegheny 2-6-6-6's left, one of which was damaged in a flood and was only "cosmetically" restored. Of course the overall factor is cost, UP was willing to spend the money, CSX apparently is not. Whilst I didn't expect to see a Big Boy steam again, I certainly do not expect to see an Allegheny 2-6-6-6 do the same, sad though that may be. |

until an Allegheny 2-6-6-6 is restored to operation Yes, but it would be magnificent. The T1 Trust, PRR T1 Class 4-4-4-4 #5550, 1 of America's First HST's |

Found this web site mentioned on one of my Facebook Groups... Map of Abandoned Railroad Rights-of-Way. This is a working map primarily of abandoned railroad lines across North America, with layers to include abandonments across the rest of the world, tourist trains and heritage railways, and unbuilt railroads. |

From Railway Age: Union Pacific: Golden at 150 COVER STORY, MAY 2019 - Railway Age antecedent American Railway Times, May 15, 1869: “On May 10, the last rail connecting the tracks of the Union and the Central Pacific Railroads was spiked in place, thus giving a continuous railway line across the continent. The blows of the hammer driving home the last spike were heard simultaneously by the aid of the telegraphic wires at the extreme eastern and western sides of the continent; and in many places the marked event was celebrated by the ringing of bells, the firing of salutes, and the interchange of congratulations between the different sections of the country. |

If only someone had saved a Niagara class locomotive... There is a live steam replica of the Niagara in the UK, it took 25 years to build I read. The T1 Trust, PRR T1 Class 4-4-4-4 #5550, 1 of America's First HST's |

Now if one wants a fast and powerful steam loco, look no farther than the PRR T1 4-4-4-4 Duplex. It will use Coal as originally designed, PRR Class T1 4-4-4-4 Steam Locomotive #5550 being built with the aim of crushing the record for the fastest Steam Passenger Train in the world, which is currently being held by the Mallard in the UK at 125.88mph, the Class T1 is reported as being able to run at 140mph. Most of the PRR is within the Norfolk Southern railroad. The T1 Trust, PRR T1 Class 4-4-4-4 #5550, 1 of America's First HST's |

I do hope they manage to find a suitable stretch of track to do these trials on, as just now the US has no "proper" high speed lines where such trials could take place. Having been involved in the current "steel on steel" record (AGV at 544kph) I know how much work is involved in the preparation and running of them, these days it's not just a case of getting out there and "opening the taps wide and see how fast she will go" as the authorities have placed all sorts of obstacles in the way :-( Bob Smith Member of Seti PIPPS (Pluto is a Planet Protest Society) Somewhere in the (un)known Universe? |

From what I read a lot of good changes have happened since the T1 locos ran back in 1948, the PRR was located in what is now the Norfolk Southern territory which used to be Conrail. Here's a link Both the Mallard and the T1 use 80 inch drive wheels, I really wish them good luck in this endeavor as they are according to the website 32.8% complete. The original budget was $10 Million, thanks to the Tender that was reduced to $7 Million. Here's a link showing their progress to date: https://prrt1steamlocomotivetrust.org/ The goal is simple; to provide mainline steam excursion service, and to set the World Speed Record for a steam locomotive. Lots can happen, however as far as I remember Norfolk and Southern have withdrawn support for steam excursions. Still as it is at least 11 years away I have to wonder if I personally will ever see it run. |
