Message 1975994 - Posted: 20 Jan 2019, 1:26:09 UTC - in response to Message 1974696.

My friend got into bee keeping last spring. He has two hives at the moment. He calls the hives "Jackie's Toy Bee Farm". He even had a hat made with that logo. So, since I've wanted a billboard on the layout, I decided to do one for that "business". Although it's just a hobby to him, on the layout it's a business. It's going to be a surprise when he sees it.

I made it like the real ones with the support at one end. I have three LEDs as the lighting. It's made out of brass parts so that the support system will be a conductor. It's been primed and then painted with an airbrush, and then had weathering toner applied.

I found a neat looking cartoon bee background for the billboard and added the text I wanted with a graphics program (Gimp). It's the size billboard companies call "Poster" - 22' x 10' in scale. Took me about 1 1/2weeks of work on and off. It's installed near a road where it would be seen by both lanes, but most of that area is still to be finished at a later time. Hope you enjoy it.

That is really cool. I bet the LED's are a big help nowadays since they can be so small.

Looks fantastic HAL.

Thanks!

The LEDs are a great way to do lighting for sure. The smaller ones are the ones that are useful. The type I used in this project are 1.6 mm LEDs which have leads. But in some of the other scenes I've used the SMD (surface mount device) sizes 1206 or 0806 sizes which have to have tiny wires soldered to them by hand.

Very tiny and I have to use magnifying glasses to see! :-O

Nice. At that scale I doubt you could do the pigeon wire on top to stop them from roosting. ;-)
You know I'm joking.

Nice scene and nice layout Hal.

Really great - I enjoy looking at amount of detail you small-scale guys manage to achieve, but I much prefer working at 12inches to the foot (you know where that nut landed when it dropped to the floor via your toes....)

Visitors to Yorkshire are warned of...

... the million pound train ticket.

According to the BBC (hope that fancy link works), it's for a joureny from Bradford to Leeds - a journey of about 12 miles, taking less than half an hour.

Next project is the intermodal area which has a Mi-Jack. You can Google Mi-Jack but it lifts containers on and off trucks and well cars. I have a kit with a gazillion parts I've been assembling, you can see the progress. Still has a lot of work to do - painting, decals, weathering. Will post the end result when done.

Cool, thought I'd send a link to a rail yard I drive by weekdays where they use them. Might give you an idea how Union Pacific does it for real.

Yes the way they are placing the containers on the ground around the area is very useful. Thanks.

Good work HAL. ;-)

BTW, are you 3D printing some of this?

Cheers.

No 3D printing yet. I'm not convinced that the detail of N scale can be reproduced by a (affordable) 3D printer. But I'd like to do some projects for sure.

Impressive.
How to build the perfect model railway
This is a miniature world set in central Scotland 60 years ago.
A small team of model rail experts took five years to recreate Alloa Station and its surroundings circa 1960 in the finest detail.
