Thanks for reminding me. I have to get my new plate sticker this month. I go in person to avoid paying the credit card fee. Not up for emissions testing this year, though.

Here in Illinois, emissions testing is done for free at a state facility. It's only required within a certain radius of Chicago or St. Louis. However, if it fails, you have to pay someone to fix it. You can't do it yourself, even if you can.

And thanks for reminding me, the counties from Ft Collins to Trinidad require emission testing prior to license plate renewal. They have roadside vans at specific locations that do a photo license plate match to the emissions recorded as you pass by.

If you don't happen to drive by one within 60 days prior to renewal date you have to go to a state facility and cough up $25. The state covers the mobile van costs by a fee included in vehicle registration. Clean air is worth it though and at a mile up there's less of it to start with.

The DMV in California uses either a credit card or for free with an e-check, which requires a routing number and a bank account, plus ones name and such. In any case, online beats waiting in line at the Barstow DMV office.

Arizona just plugs your newer car into the computer and reads the codes. Now diesel is another story because you have to push the pedal to the metal three time and hope the governor prevents the engine from self destructing. Currently each year I have two diesels that have to go through this right of passage and they are still intact but i'm not so sure of my nerves because I just had to do the shop pickup again. My mom hates getting stuff smog tested so I do everything including her Edge.

If I were able to buy a newer car and I don't know if I will be able to or not, it would be a VW Bug(VW calls it a New Beetle, it's still a Bug), one without a sunroof, w/a turbo diesel engine and an automatic tranny, why a Bug? It's a coupe, I'm tall and coupes have slightly bigger doors and I've got long legs, so every bit helps.

I am 5'14" and for the most part I only have trouble when somebody ran the seat up. As for diesels, they aren't fun to drive because they are sluggish when you step on the pedal. The are ok on a road trip where you set the cruse control but in city it takes time for the turbo to spool up. Most of the time I only use the pickup to fill our yard fuel tanks but I do need to haul stuff every so often.

5'14"? Ok. I drive mainly on the fwy, that's the easy and direct way to get to Barstow, though there are other ways to go from Yermo to Barstow and vice versa. And I'm 6'1" tall.

Driven a diesel recently? The newer technology gives them a 'lot of grunt'. They can generate a great deal of torque when properly tuned.

They pull just fine once you get them wound up but to keep the emission down, the fuel is limited until the boost pressure is high enough to burn the extra fuel. The sequence is you step on the fuel causing the RPMs to go up. As the RPMs go up, the turbo gets more exhaust causing it to spin up . That results in more boost pressure which causes the injector pump to allow more fuel to flow. It is a lag between pushing the petal down and feeing it in the seat of you pants.

As for grunt, I have spent many hours traveling the road in a 34 foot motor home pulling a 26 foot sales trailer full of stock and a Geo Metro and a gas engine wouldn't have handled that very well. I have more detail numbers somewhere but we were somewhere around 12 ton with about 300 horse power off the diesel.

Also note that my personal car is a mustang V8 with a manual transmission and I am very aware of a delay in power.

Mines always passed smog, but then I have iridium plugs, a stock replacement K&N air filter, 4.5qts Royal Purple 5w30 oil(the car stopped smoking under acceleration when I started using this oil) and for a 1999 Escort zx2, just over 90,046 miles on the odometer.

I go in person to avoid paying the credit card fee

Don't you have "debit cards" with no fee?

Over here all debit card transactions carry no fee, and of course can be used for all the same transactions a credit card can.

Because of that and the fact my credit card is set to pay off at the end of each month, I rarely use it.

Fees or no fees really does depend on the vendor, some will make charges on debit cards but not credit cards, or visa-versa, or none, or both...

During my last visit to the USA I found more places charge for using debit cards than credit cards. And one place charged for paying cash (dollar bills), but not a credit card.

That's not too much of a problem with me. I carry all three. My plastic is a Visa debit card. It helps having that dual purpose card.

The DMV is different and when they want a dollar, they mean a dollar so the cost of processing plastic is added to the purchase price. Most purchases come without a service fee and the cost of running the plastic is taken out of the profits. Even when you donate to SETI you donate a bit less than you think because the cost of the transferring the money is removed from your donation.

A sheep in Australia has set a new world record of wool. Chris had 40 kg wool cut. He has probably spent at least five years in the open without being cut.
