Significant access to two of the world’s most powerful telescopes – 100 Meter Robert C. Byrd Green Bank Telescope in West Virginia, USA (“Green Bank Telescopeâ€)1 and 64-metre diameter Parkes Telescope in New South Wales, Australia (“Parkes Telescopeâ€). ??? From what you got it at all ??? Not all SETI revolves around SETI@home, at first. Second, if you would read a little about this initiative and look at names mentioned you will find some SETI@home related staff too. I would say it's not impossible even to get part of that new initiative in part of new data processing via SETI@home. That is, directly opposite conclusion. |

Was just going to mention that, thanks Raistmer. "Our approach to data will be open and taking advantage of the problem-solving power of social networks." Maybe Dan & Andrew could give us their views on that? |

Some good news for sure. |

Now that is great news. If they succeed in getting 10x the data, will the servers be able to cope is the next question. Can just see all those mouths drooling over all those AP tasks to be had :-) |

I forsee more rooms like these in our future. Mine is starting to look similar but not as organized. |

That is the most beautiful picture I've ever seen. Jealous! Spencer |

. . .Perhaps, spread the word, and get more participants in the SETI project? |

We all hope and wish that the newfound money will be used wisely. How about some co-ordinated efforts among the world's astronomers, SETI mavens, NASA, JPL, ESA, Large radio telescopes and super-computer resources. Who will call the meeting ? We have: Arecibo The Very Large Array (New Mexico) Jodrell Bank Atacama desert. The Allen Array West Virginia Some 100+ others Another good scolding by Daddio |

The problem is not all astronomers believe in SETI. We have a big 64 meters radiotelescope in Sardinia but it is not involved in any SETI. Tullio |

Yes that right. Some of the people involved have made outrageous and unsupported statements that tend to label the effort as being run by a bunch of crackpots. Perhaps they could be persuaded to fit a receiver and a computer at this and many other sites. Perhaps some of the new money could fund this. This could most likely be done without impacting their other research. |

The way I see it, the naysayers may be right and we are alone in the galaxy but what does it hurt to keep looking. Bob DeWoody My motto: Never do today what you can put off until tomorrow as it may not be required. This no longer applies in light of current events. |

Some older telescopes in danger of closure might accept to do SETI in exchange for money to keep them working. I am astonished that no mention was made of Arecibo in the New York Times article on Breakthrough. After all, SETI@home gets data from Arecibo and so does Einstein@home on its search for binary pulsars. Einstein@home gets also data from Parkes. Tullio |

Do we need to look any further than Berkeley News. Internet investor Yuri Milner joins with Berkeley in $100 million search for extraterrestrial intelligence Searching for a needle in a haystack |

We are not nine millions. We are one million and one half and only 7% are actively participating (As quoted by Chris in Boincstats). Yullio |

Yes but nine millions SETI users remind me of Mussolini who boasted of eight millions bayonets. I hope we don't finish like him. Tullio |

Will SETI's unprecedented new program finally find E.T.? Stephen Hawking, Frank Drake and dozens of journalists gathered at the Royal Society in London last week to hear astronomers announce a ground-breaking new project to search for intelligent extraterrestrial life called "Breakthrough Listen." They will be using two of the world's largest radio telescopes (Green Bank Telescope in West Virginia and the Parkes Radio Telescope in Australia) to listen for radio messages from intelligent alien species. Scientists have chosen to target the nearest million stars as well as the nearest 100 galaxies. This project will also monitor the Galactic plane for months at a time. This unprecedented effort is a collaboration between UC Berkeley and the Breakthrough Prize Foundation, and employs an international team of astronomers and data scientists, including Frank Drake – the father of SETI (Search for ExtraTerrestrial Intelligence). It is perhaps fitting that this new program will make use of the Green Bank Telescope (GBT), since Green Bank, West Virginia was the site of the first modern SETI experiment, called "Project Ozma." In 1960, Frank Drake pointed the Tatel telescope at two nearby stars to search for the telltale signs of intelligent life; radio signals near 1.420 GHz. He listened on-and-off for four months, collecting 150 hours of data. He heard nothing. http://phys.org/news/2015-08-seti-unprecedented.html |

I see the usual confusion between SETI Institute and SETI@home. The Allen Telescope Array never gave data to SETI@home. Instead, the Big Ear telescope received the famous "WoW!" signal, which never reapeated itself. Tullio |
