The nuance is that on the list of things that society has for police, I place the safety of the public higher than I place the safety of an individual officer. If that individual officer does not has ready access to a weapon then he will not endanger the public waving it around every opportunity he gets.

The Berlin Wall proved that walls are a dumb idea and people (future generations) don't want them.

WWII proved that punishing the innocent for the acts of the extreme is a really, really dumb idea.

Nobody learned. People are scared and are looking to someone willing to sell them on safety and protection, in much the same way Mussolini rose to power.

We are doomed to repeat history and get set back by ~100 years if Trump gets into the White House.
