"Chargegate"

One has to wonder, 3rd party USB cord? (And that would be Apple's way!)

The Big Hack: How China Used a Tiny Chip to Infiltrate U.S. Companies

The attack by Chinese spies reached almost 30 U.S. companies, including Amazon and Apple, by compromising America’s technology supply chain, according to extensive interviews with government and corporate sources.

Nested on the servers’ motherboards, the testers found a tiny microchip, not much bigger than a grain of rice, that wasn’t part of the boards’ original design.

During the ensuing top-secret probe, which remains open more than three years later, investigators determined that the chips allowed the attackers to create a stealth doorway into any network that included the altered machines. Multiple people familiar with the matter say investigators found that the chips had been inserted at factories run by manufacturing subcontractors in China.

The chips on Elemental servers were designed to be as inconspicuous as possible, according to one person who saw a detailed report prepared for Amazon by its third-party security contractor, as well as a second person who saw digital photos and X-ray images of the chips incorporated into a later report prepared by Amazon’s security team. Gray or off-white in color, they looked more like signal conditioning couplers, another common motherboard component, than microchips, and so they were unlikely to be detectable without specialized equipment. Depending on the board model, the chips varied slightly in size, suggesting that the attackers had supplied different factories with different batches.

In one case, the malicious chips were thin enough that they’d been embedded between the layers of fiberglass onto which the other components were attached, according to one person who saw pictures of the chips.

Why does this not surprise me? I can remember when the USA neither exported to or imported from China any computer electronics. Supporters of that position were chastised as being paranoid and an obstruction to friendly relations with China.

https://www.reuters.com/article/us-red-hat-m-a-ibm/ibm-nears-deal-to-acquire-cyber-security-company-red-hat-sources-idUSKCN1N20N3
(Reuters) - IBM Corp (IBM.N) is nearing deal to acquire software company Red Hat Inc (RHT.N) in a deal that could exceed $30 billion and allow it to expand its cyber security offerings, people familiar with the matter said on Sunday.

The deal would be by far IBM’s biggest acquisition. The move underscores IBM CEO Ginni Rometty’s efforts to expand the company’s subscription-based technology offerings and diversify it business beyond software sales and mainframe servers, which have faced sluggish growth.

An agreement between IBM and Red Hat is expected to be announced later on Sunday, the sources said, asking not to be identified because the matter is confidential. IBM and Red Hat did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Red Hat specializes in Linux operating systems, the most popular type of open-source software, which was developed as an alternative to proprietary software made by Microsoft Corp (MSFT.O).

Apple in the news again

The Home Office has also signed a £91m contract with French company Sopra Steria to set up computer terminals at 56 local libraries around the UK to help those without smartphones, or without the necessary digital skills, to apply to stay in the UK.
With Brexit looming ever closer, no UK company capable of doing it?

We've got as many as 56 local libraries left after the austerity cuts?

Well, now you know anyone with an andorid phone and a little programming experience can walk around town and scan every passport it comes near.
