Facebook said all the data collected remained on users' phones not servers.
Is Zuckerberg a clown?

Regardless of whether or not it is on users phones or Facebook's servers, the Chinese have the data.

Oops
Should have announced it asap rather than now. Now they may get a huge fine under the EU's GDPR.

For five years, China had the world’s fastest computer, a symbolic achievement for a country trying to show that it is a tech powerhouse. But the US now retakes the lead thanks to a 200 petaflops machine, Summit (an IBM AC922 system linking more than 27,000 NVIDIA Volta GPUs with more than 9,000 IBM Power9 CPUs), built for the Oak Ridge National Laboratory.

TOP500
SETI@home : 0.8 teraflops / 0.001 petaflops (see bottom of the Applications page)
BOINC projects combined: 20 petaflops

The SETI@Home numbers are pretty far off; for example, I'm doing about 2 TF myself... by the definition of the Cobblestone a 1 GF computer will earn 200 Cobblestone credits a day (and this is with CreditFew Screw.... um.... CreditNew which actually just about halves the real performances, so it's 4 TF but counted as 2)... simply divide RAC by 200,000 to convert to TF.

As per BOINCStats, SETI@Home's entire RAC is about 180 million, which by this simple calculation is 900 TF or 0.9 PF, and this matches what appears on the BOINCStats page

"The key question we always ask ourselves is: Who is building this technology and for what purposes?" says Privacy International's Frederike Kaltheuner. "Is it used to help us - or to judge, assess and control us?"

New genre of artificial intelligence programs take computer hacking to another level

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - The nightmare scenario for computer security - artificial intelligence programs that can learn how to evade even the best defenses - may already have arrived. That warning from security researchers is driven home by a team from IBM Corp. (IBM.N) who have used the artificial intelligence technique known as machine learning to build hacking programs that could slip past top-tier defensive measures. The group will unveil details of its experiment at the Black Hat security conference in Las Vegas on Wednesday.

Hmm... Voting machines in the US...

At @defcon hacking conference and just learned how easy it is to physically gain admin access on a voting machine that is used in 18 states. Requires no tools and takes under 2 minutes.

BBC News: The race to make the world's most powerful computer ever - 4 September 2018
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-45273584

Quantum computers have long been touted as incredibly powerful machines that will be able to solve hugely complex computational problems much faster than any computer we have available today. But no-one can agree on the best way to make them. Who will win the race?

Physicists, engineers and computer scientists around the world are trying to develop four very different types of quantum computers, based around light particles, trapped ions, superconducting qubits, or nitrogen-vacancy centres in diamonds.

Companies like IBM, Google, Rigetti, Intel and Microsoft are currently leading the quantum charge.

Each method has its pros and cons, but the overarching challenge is the fragile nature of quantum itself.

Viewers of the BBC drama, Bodyguard, may be shocked to know that the UK actually has the most extreme surveillance powers in a democracy.

Almost 'all modern computers' affected by cold boot attack, researchers warn

The attack would allow potential hackers to steal sensitive information stored on your RAM.
