For five years, China had the world’s fastest computer, a symbolic achievement for a country trying to show that it is a tech powerhouse. But the US now retakes the lead thanks to a 200 petaflops machine, Summit (an IBM AC922 system linking more than 27,000 NVIDIA Volta GPUs with more than 9,000 IBM Power9 CPUs), built for the Oak Ridge National Laboratory. https://www.nytimes.com/2018/06/08/technology/supercomputer-china-us.html (archive) TOP500 SETI@home : 0.8 teraflops / 0.001 petaflops (see bottom of the Applications page) BOINC projects combined: 20 petaflops Apr 3, 1999 - May 3, 2020 |

TOP500 The SETI@Home numbers are pretty far off; for example, I'm doing about 2 TF myself... by the definition of the Cobblestone a 1 GF computer will earn 200 Cobblestone credits a day (and this is with Credit As per BOINCStats, SETI@Home's entire RAC is about 180 million, which by this simple calculation is 900 TF or 0.9 PF, and this matches what appears on the BOINCStats page |

"The key question we always ask ourselves is: Who is building this technology and for what purposes?" says Privacy International's Frederike Kaltheuner. "Is it used to help us - or to judge, assess and control us?"Minority Report on the way |
