Branding and Good Management Matter: One of the things that we learned over the weekend is that Berkshire’s biggest investments over the past year have been in Apple (AAPL). When asked about that in the above-referenced interview, Buffett gave two solid, informative reasons.

First, he said, he likes and respects Tim Cook, the Apple CEO. Buffett is the opposite of an activist investor. He does not buy a company to “improve” its management, he buys companies whose management he trusts. If that is important to somebody with the potential power of Warren Buffett, it should be even more important to relatively powerless investors like you and me.

The second reason he gave was that he believed that the Apple brand was, as he put it, “sticky.” He himself famously still uses a flip phone, but that doesn’t mean that he cannot appreciate the power of the Apple ecosystem. He sees family members and employees who faithfully use Apple products and understands the stability and opportunity that gives a company over time.

Doesn't see to have any investments in "open source" and is sitting on a pile of $116B cash. Is there a lesson there?

Rep. Greg Walden (R-Ore.), the committee chairman, and Rep. Gregg Harper (R-Miss.) sent a letter to the Linux Foundation on Monday, citing the critical “Heartbleed” vulnerability discovered in 2014 that impacted thousands of websites and allowed hackers to steal user passwords.

“As the last several years have made clear, OSS [open-source software] is such a foundational part of the modern connected world that it has become critical cyber infrastructure,” the lawmakers wrote. “As we continue to examine cybersecurity issues generally, it is therefore imperative that we understand the challenges and opportunities the OSS ecosystem faces, and potential steps that OSS stakeholders may take to further support it.”

The lawmakers emphasized that the wide use of open-source software by businesses “creates widespread, distributed, and common points of potential risk across organizations when OSS vulnerabilities are found.”

Open-source software is built with code that is publicly accessible, in contrast to software developed by companies like Microsoft and Apple that relies on code that only the developers have viewed. The Linux Foundation is a nonprofit organization founded in 2000 to promote and advance open-source tech projects.

“Companies like Microsoft, Adobe, or Apple have the processes and procedures in place to quickly address these vulnerabilities, and—more importantly—the time and funding to do so,” the lawmakers wrote Monday. “This is not always the case for OSS vulnerabilities, as OSS creators or maintainers may be globally-located volunteers, who often have unrelated full-time employment and may be uncompensated for their OSS work.”

Apple MacBook keyboard issue prompts lawsuit.

If you're having problems with your MacBook keyboard, you're not alone. And now the issue may be heading to court.

A class-action complaint filed Friday says people who bought a MacBook or MacBook Pro equipped with Apple's "butterfly" keyboard "face a constant threat of nonresponsive keys and accompanying keyboard failure" and accuses Apple of failing to alert consumers about the issue.

Apple didn't respond to a request for comment.
