Upgrading just for the hell of it is pointless.

When a machine can no longer cope with the tasks it was built for, then yes.

To keep in the forefront of technology, only if one has big pockets.

I have no problem with that position, Sirius. If one doesn't want to upgrade just for the sake of upgrading, that's their right. Again, if that's what was said originally, we wouldn't be having the other discussion.

Personally, I've always loved technology and love being on the bleeding edge. I can't afford it much these days, so I was happy to take advantage of my free upgrade to Windows 10 on several machines.

I see Win 10 as a beta for Win 11.

I think it's all down to how comfortable one feels with an O/S. I loved XP, Win 98, Vista(when enough ram installed) & 7 The rest after 7 I find annoying.

You're going to be waiting a long time then. ;) Microsoft plans on staying on 10 for a long time. There's already been 3 releases for Win10 and the fourth one is due out in the next 8 weeks or less.

Visiting the states? Then leave your phone & laptop at home

So much for prevention of ID theft or privacy :-(

I had already decided that if I ever travel to the USA again I will take only my "spare" phone with nothing but important contacts on.

I would also take my older laptop which would have everything I didn't want someone else knowing removed.

Also I would change my passwords to simple ones as there is no way I want complete strangers knowing some of my complex 15 digit ones.

The only items I'm going to take on attending my niece's wedding later this year will be my Digital Camera & Camcorder. Both SD cards will empty. All photos & videos taken during that trip will be sent remotely to my server. As for having a phone, no chance. Will either use landline or Skype via the family's computer :-)

What part of strip searched and x-rayed don't you understand? You are guilty of smuggling or worse until proved innocent when you cross a border.

Maybe brexit wasn't such a good idea? Or how many burner phones do you need to travel now?

Why don't you.
On average US prices for electronics goods are ~16% lower than UK prices. You can by doing a few searches before you go, and possibly get 25% off the UK prices for laptops.

Open Source Java, isn't free.

Unmanaged open source security and compliance risk are reaching epidemic proportions – threatening the very integrity of the software supply chain.

Usual game of entrapment...

The problem arises if you install that application on hundreds of desktops, requiring Microsoft Windows Installer Enterprise JRE Installer – which is NOT free to use… And it does not stop there. There are additional parts and editions of Java that are not free either.

Which is where everyone must demand FREEDOM rather than just an assumed 'free of cost'...

All a very nasty game that is endemic for far too much of proprietary IT...

IT is what we allow it to be...

And that thinking is the problem, that open source means free. Creative content will always require payment to the creator. Even if that payment is just spell the name right. Pay every time.

Indeed so and quite rightly so. Also needed to maintain a sustainable system. That can still include complete freedom as demanded by Free/Libre Open Source Software/Systems.

We have no need of the various corporate Mafias and "IP" trolls waging a greedy war of extortion upon all users to smite all our freedoms...

Such is the way of greedy Neo-Kapitalism all-without-morals? Cooperation is non-destructive and much much more productive for all.

All in our only one world,

You are such a good tease! :-P

The FLOSS is free-of-charge and guarantees your freedoms.

My professional time comes at a cost and is charged. That comes with no "additional overheads". That works very well and is very cost effective and productive. The no overheads are a real pleasure when compared to the widespread silliness of EULAs, registrations, Marketing hurdles and distractions, and the tangled artificial restrictions on use imposed due to the arbitrary restrictions imposed by the Marketing of that 'other stuff' called proprietary software...

You can have freedom in IT. After all...
