Woman diagnosed with 'broken-heart syndrome' after loss of beloved dog
Doctors were expecting to treat a Texas woman who was mourning the death of her beloved Yorkshire terrier for a possible heart attack, only to discover that her symptoms were actually due to a broken heart. Joanie Simpson, whose 2016 medical ordeal was detailed in the New England Journal of Medicine, was diagnosed with Takotsubo cardiomyopathy, a condition commonly associated with the loss of a spouse or child.

The symptoms can mimic those of a heart attack and is also referred to as “broken-heart syndrome,” The Washington Post reported. The condition is most common in women ages 58 to 75, and can cause weakening of the left ventricle, according to Harvard Medical School.

For Simpson, who at the time was stressed due to her son’s impending back surgery, her son-in-law’s unemployment and a property sale, it was the loss of the dog named Meha that sent her over the edge.

“The kids were grown and out of the house, so she was our little girl,” Simpson, 62, told The Washington Post.

Dog owners have lower mortality, study finds

Dog owners have a lower risk of death from cardiovascular disease or other causes, a study of 3.4 million Swedes has found.

The team analysed national registries for people aged 40 to 80, and compared them to dog ownership registers.

They found there was a lower risk of cardiovascular disease in owners of dogs, particularly of hunting breeds.

While owning a dog may help physical activity, researchers said it may be active people who choose to own dogs.

They also said owning a dog may protect people from cardiovascular disease by increasing their social contact or wellbeing, or by changing the owner's bacterial microbiome.

These may be the world’s first images of dogs—and they’re wearing leashes

Carved into a sandstone cliff on the edge of a bygone river in the Arabian Desert, a hunter draws his bow for the kill. He is accompanied by 13 dogs, each with its own coat markings; two animals have lines running from their necks to the man’s waist.

The engravings likely date back more than 8000 years, making them the earliest depictions of dogs, a new study reveals. And those lines are probably leashes, suggesting that humans mastered the art of training and controlling dogs thousands of years earlier than previously thought.
...
The hunting scene comes from Shuwaymis, a hilly region of northwestern Saudi Arabia where seasonal rains once formed rivers and supported pockets of dense vegetation

I confess that this behaviour on Tommy’s part reassured me not a little. I am a great believer in the instincts of animals, especially of dogs, and I felt certain that if this man had not been in all essentials human like ourselves, Tommy would not have tolerated him. In the same way the sleeper’s clear liking for Tommy, at whom he looked much oftener and with greater kindness than he did at us, suggested that there was goodness in him somewhere, since although a dog in its wonderful tolerance may love a bad person in whom it smells out hidden virtue, no really bad person ever loved a dog, or, I may add, a child or a flower.

looks like no one has posted in a long time.
Being so called locked in (disabled) I decided to get a cat or dog, I found a dog at the rescue shelter. almost 3 years old but still has a lot of puppy in her yet, I'm enjoying the heck out of her.
I needed something to get my brain working again instead of just sitting around all day.

She is loving has hell and good with anyone else around, she sits on the floor of the scooter when going anywhere and everyone laughs. Pokes her head around the handle to see where we end up.

Right now it's the best money spent this year.

Truffle the puppy from York sees snow for the first time

This is the first time this puppy has seen snow.

Truffle the cocker spaniel went out to play in the snow in York earlier.

His owner Jo Ellery said he was sulking when she made him come back inside.

His antics have captured the attention of Twitter users with the puppy's antic receiving thousands of likes and retweets on the social media platform.

Abandoned Shelter Pups Find New Purpose After Becoming Service Dogs For Veterans With PTSD

Rescue dogs are often overlooked as damaged goods, but one organization in Portland, Maine, is looking to give these dogs a sense of purpose.

K9s on The Front Line is a nonprofit organization that pairs veterans suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) with a rescue dog trained to be a service animal. Each veteran goes through a rigorous 16-week training program with their dog, after which their canine companion is certified to assist in whatever PTSD-related issues arise.

“Anyone who’s had a dog knows what a dog can do for you,” says Linda Murray, vice president and director of development for K9s on The Front Line. “Dogs can absorb negative emotions.”

Depending on the type of PTSD the veteran is experiencing, each service dog is trained a bit differently.

Dog walks a total of 40 miles to find owners who couldn’t keep her

A loyal dog named Cathleen walked nearly 40 miles in search of her previous owners who made the difficult decision of giving her away.

After the family moved to a new home in Seminole, Oklahoma, they decided they could no longer keep the 6-year-old Great Pyrenees mix for undisclosed reasons.

Another family in the nearby town of Prague agreed to keep the dog until a local animal shelter could find her a new forever home.

Missing her previous owners, Cathleen walked 20 miles from Prague to Seminole in hopes of reuniting with them. The ambitious dog reportedly made the trip not once, but TWICE.

Another dog that missed his owners.
He was waiting perseveringly for the return of his deceased owner for more than nine years.

We’re Obsessed With This Museum's Newest Hire
The Boston Museum of Fine Arts just hired the cutest security guard.

Meet Riley, a 12-week-old Weimaraner puppy being trained to sniff out invasive – ahem – bugs.

Yeah, you read that right. Apparently invasive pests hitchhike rides on museum-goers and new specimens, potentially damaging valuable artwork.

"Weimaraners are very intelligent and have an incredible sense of smell. Riley’s duties as a scent dog at the MFA are well suited to his breed!" said the museum's public relations manager Ashley Bleimes in an email to IFLScience. Riley belongs to Nicki Luongo, director of the museum’s protective services department, who will also be training the pupper.

People would rather hang out with their dogs than friends, study says
More than half of American dog owners admit they flake out on social events to hang out with their pet, according to new research.

The study of 2,000 dog owners found skipping out on human commitments specifically to get a bit of quality furry friend time is a common occurrence.

But you meet a lot of people when walking your dog.
Some even meet their future girl/boy friend that way:)
