Hi Spud

Yes it can be done, I've done so as an experiment...

I would try a light weight Ubuntu variant Lubuntu 14.04 iso / CD, you
should find Boinc in the Repositories. You will also need to keep it
powered via AC permanently as every thing OS and programs are in RAM
(Volatile Memory).

For system that don't support booting from a USB storage device, or where the USB device must be selected in the BIOS in order to boot, a live disc works.

I imagine that the BOINC portion wouldn't be any different than the Windows PE CDs I made. I configured it to attached to SETI@home on startup & then detach before restarting the system.

Yes, this should work with Linux, there are many distributions, with support this (boot of a CD, save files and settings to USB or whatever you want).

Or simply get a bunch of old HDDs from eBay for 1€ (or 1£ in your case) or so, won't cost more than not the cheapest USB flash drive (should not be too cheap/slow for such use).

Hi Spud,

Would it be Possible to remove a HDD from a System that is Dead and thus use the Volatile Memory within the System to run BOINC for crunching with SETI@Home.

The HDD is Dead completely but I have a X2 Duel core Athlon hear and its killing me not having it up and running as I've had it for a good while now. I'm wanting to install a new SATA Drive but due to being Skint until the end of the month I can't.

Has anyone done this or know if its possible with a Linux Distro as a Live system.

I think Ubuntu did a variant that ran from an optical drive..

Anyway would a smallish SSD be of any use to you? I have a Samsung 128Gig SSD spare.
PM me if interested, its gratis~:-)I'm in the UK, can post the drive Monday if you want it.
Cliff,
Been there, Done that, Still no damm T shirt!
