WHO: Sexual transmission of Zika more common than thought

Sexual transmission of Zika is more common than previously thought, the World Health Organization said Tuesday. But scientists still have a number of questions about the first mosquito-borne disease known to spread through sex, including how long it can last in semen.

Mosquitoes' rapid spread poses threat beyond Zika

As the world focuses on Zika's rapid advance in the Americas, experts warn the virus that originated in Africa is just one of a growing number of continent-jumping diseases carried by mosquitoes threatening swathes of humanity.

The battle against the insects on the streets of Brazil is the latest in an ancient war between humankind and the Culicidae, or mosquito, family which the pests frequently win.

As Ebola wanes, a spike in infectious diseases sweeps through Liberia

MONROVIA, Liberia — The Ebola crisis here may be over, but its impact can be seen at health clinics across the country. Running water is sporadic. Drugs are in short supply. And with the medical system still reeling, Liberia is now recording a spike in cases of tuberculosis and other treatable infections.

Good News!

WHO hails Ebola milestone as Sierra Leone flare-up ends

The recent flare-up of Ebola in Sierra Leone has ended, leaving no confirmed cases of the virus in West Africa, the World Health Organization (WHO) said.

More than 3,500 people have died of Ebola in Sierra Leone since the outbreak began in late 2013.

WHO said on Thursday that the country was free of the epidemic after it marked 42 days since the last person confirmed to have Ebola in Sierra Leone tested negative for a second time.

Zika Epidemic:

Puerto Rico Braces for
Its Own Zika Epidemic

SAN JUAN, P.R. — On an inexorable march across the hemisphere, the Zika virus has begun spreading through Puerto Rico, now the United States’ front line in a looming epidemic.

The outbreak is expected to be worse here than anywhere else in the country. The island, a warm, wet paradise veined with gritty poverty, is the ideal environment for the mosquitoes carrying the virus. The landscape is littered with abandoned houses and discarded tires that are perfect breeding grounds for the insects. Some homes and schools lack window screens and air-conditioning, exposing residents to almost constant bites.

Fourth Person Dies Of Ebola In Latest Flare Up In Guinea

CONAKRY (Reuters) - A fourth person has died of Ebola in Guinea in the latest flare up of an epidemic that has killed more than 11,300 people in that country, Sierra Leone and Liberia since 2013 but now claims few victims.

"The young girl who was hospitalized at the Ebola treatment center in Nzerekore is dead," said Fode Tass Sylla, spokesman for the center that coordinates Guinea's fight against the virus.

Liberia Closes Border With Guinea After Ebola Flare-up

Liberian officials ordered the border with neighboring Guinea closed Tuesday amid concerns of a new outbreak of the Ebola virus.

Liberia’s information minister Lenn Eugene Nangbe told Reuters the closure is a precaution to prevent the spread of the disease, and said the border “will remain closed until the situation in Guinea improves.”

Fifth person dies in Guinea Ebola flare-up

A fifth person has died of Ebola in southeast Guinea since March 17, a health official told Reuters on Tuesday, raising concerns that a recent flare-up of the deadly virus could spread.

The latest case was detected in Macenta prefecture, about 200 kilometers from the village of Korokpara where the four other recent Ebola-related deaths occurred, said Fode Sylla Tass, spokesman for National Coordination of the Fight against Ebola in Guinea.

New Form Of Ebola Virus May Cause Disease In Humans

London: The Reston virus, a member of the Ebola virus family which is known to circulate in domestic pigs in Asia, may acquire the few mutations necessary to cause disease in humans and to develop into a novel health threat, researchers have warned.

A team of researchers from the University of Kent in England examined the differences between Ebola viruses that cause severe disease in humans and the Reston virus that does not.
