Call for action against 'twin scourge' of diabetes and TB

More needs to be done to tackle a dual threat of patients having both tuberculosis (TB) and diabetes, global health experts say.

A declaration made at a summit in Indonesia warns that the convergence of the two illnesses represents a "looming co-epidemic".

Rare typhoid fever spread at Qdoba restaurant in Colorado

FIRESTONE, Colo. - Three cases of life-threatening typhoid fever have been confirmed in Colorado.

CBS Denver reports all three of the people sickened with the bacterial infection had eaten at a Qdoba Mexican Grill in Firestone in August.

Though the outbreak happened in August, the three illnesses were just reported in recent weeks because incubation of the rare infection and diagnosis take time, said state epidemiologist Dr. Lisa Miller with the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment.

Yea! Sierra Leone.

Sierra Leone set for Ebola all clear as it approaches 42 days without a fresh case

Sierra Leone is expected to be declared Ebola-free by the World Health Organisation on Saturday, when it will have gone 42 days without any fresh case of the virus.

Celebrations are being prepared but the optimism is tempered by caution because the virus is still affecting neighbouring Guinea, which has recorded four cases in the past fortnight.

As Sierra Leone counts the days to Ebola all clear, safe burial teams press on

Samura Osman, a former soldier, died at home from an unspecified illness. He was 35. Osman’s corpse – a potential public health risk following the Ebola outbreak – lies swaddled and zipped in a body bag, awaiting safe burial by a team of trained volunteers equipped with masks and protective clothing.

Life after Ebola: The survivors facing health problems and grief

Many patients who overcame Ebola following the 2014 outbreak are now facing physical and mental health problems, according to survivors groups in Sierra Leone.

More than 28,000 cases of Ebola have been reported since the first confirmed case in March 2014 and around 17,000 of those survived.

Ebola outbreak: WHO 'delayed Sierra Leone state of emergency'

The World Health Organization (WHO) delayed Sierra Leone from declaring a state of emergency and restricting movement during the Ebola outbreak, the country's president has told the BBC.

President Ernest Bai Koroma said he had had "conflicts" with WHO advisers.

Guinea tests mobile suitcase lab for Ebola diagnosis

In Guinea, scientists have successfully tested a new approach to rapidly diagnose Ebola – a mobile suitcase laboratory.

The suitcase laboratory uses solar power and allows users to conduct simple, on-site diagnostics even in areas that are remote and don’t have a laboratory equipped for Ebola. This new method, called recombinase polymerase amplification technique (RPA), uses viral RNA to rapidly identify the infection with oral swabs from infected people.

Cleveland man who faked Ebola scare gets probation

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- A Clevelandman who lied about contracting the Ebola virus during the height of public fear over the disease last year was sentenced Monday to two years of probation.

James Midgette, 60, was ordered to undergo mental health treatment and pay MetroHealth Medical Center nearly $10,000 after he admitted to lying to emergency workers in November 2014.

Ebola remains in Guinea, where the outbreak began

TANAH, Guinea — After killing more than 11,000 people, West Africa’s Ebola outbreak is down to a handful of cases. They are all in Guinea where the disease first emerged nearly two years ago and where health workers battle community resistance in their bid to extinguish the disease.

Brazil tests man for Ebola, puts others under observation

Brazil was testing a 46-year-old man coming from Guinea for Ebola after preventively shutting down a public health unit where he first got medical attention, the Health Ministry said on Wednesday.

The man, whose name officials declined to provide, arrived in Brazil on Nov. 6 and developed high fever with muscle pains and headaches two days later, the ministry said in a statement.

West Africa Counts Down to Possible End of Ebola, World Health Organization Says

No new cases of Ebola were reported in Guinea last week, the first week since the epidemic began that none of the Ebola-affected countries in West Africa have reported a case, the World Health Organization said Wednesday.

That doesn't mean Guinea is free and clear — there could be cases that haven't been detected yet.
