WHO downgrades Ebola health risk

Ebola is no longer an "extraordinary health event" and the risk of the virus spreading is low, the World Health Organization says.

It means the disease is not thought to be a significant public health threat to countries outside of those affected in West Africa.

A small cluster of cases are still occurring in Guinea, but Sierra Leone and Liberia have not had any in months.

Measles Reported In One Of California’s Most Unvaccinated Counties


An unvaccinated child has been diagnosed with measles in a California county with one of the state’s lowest rates for kindergarten immunization, the state’s department of public health announced Tuesday.

The department is investigating the child, who attends Yuba River Charter School in Nevada County and showed symptoms of measles after returning home from from a trip overseas. He has recovered but was infectious at school on March 17.

Experts warn complacency on Ebola may leave vaccine work unfinished

The World Health Organization (WHO) has declared the Ebola emergency over, but action is still needed to fully develop effective vaccines and prepare the world for future outbreaks, experts said on Thursday.

Great progress has been made in Ebola vaccine development in the last two years, according to a report by an international panel of infectious disease experts, but this "could grind to a halt as memories of the outbreak in West Africa begin to fade".

This last week I watched a award winner show on the ABC called Landline at the end of the show the said one of the reporters had won a award for a story about Q fever.

When I was 17 I worked in a slaughter house and became very sick for a few days .

High Temp , shivers , and my joints ached , at the time my father was going to take me to a hospital as he was worried however being a bloke I just said no dad I'm ok it's just Q fever and i'll be ok in a few days it doesn't kill just makes you sick like the flu .

Well I was wrong there are long term side effects that 20% of people get .

These effects are usually like Chronic fatigue syndrome .

Normally you only get it working around Beef , goats , sheep . It can also live in the soil for years and when a drought comes it can then be kicked up in the dust and become air bourne

So if you live in the country near farms and have become sick and suffer Chronic fatigue syndrome then you may have cought Q-Fever and you may want to have a test to see if you have the antibodies in your blood witch means you have cought Q-Fever at some time and can get help for the Chronic fatigue syndrome and depression that it can cause

There was a outbreak in Norway only a few years ago and 50,000 people became infected with it in a town and shows you that you don't have to live on the door step of a farm to get but just live near in a farming town and the government order'd a cull of all the infected goats in that country .

Australia has the only known vaccine for humans and the French have one for animals .

I'll put a link to it at ABC but I'm not shore if you will be able to watch the story but try it and see .

The latest outbreak in Australia saw 5 people get sick but it was not till a 6th person got sick and actually got a diagnosis of Q-Fever that the Farmer of the property realised what was going on .

It is common for this not to be diagnosed as people tend to think it's just the flu

Probe of Ebola flareup in Liberia widens; Woman traveled from Guinea after husband died

A 30-year-old woman who died from Ebola last week arrived in Liberia from Guinea, where her husband had died of unknown causes, the World Health Organization said Monday as it traced the source of a flareup that put authorities on high alert for the virus that had been nearly stamped out after a two-year outbreak in West Africa.

Ebola claims another victim in Guinea as vaccinations ramped up

Conakry (AFP) - A new outbreak of Ebola in rural Guinea has claimed another victim, health authorities said Tuesday, as experts work to establish whether a cluster of deaths there is linked to two other cases in Liberia.

"We have eight deaths out of nine confirmed cases. The last fatality dates back to Sunday," said Ibrahima Sylla, spokesman for Guinea's Ebola response unit.

Flu jab blunder fuelled biggest spike in deaths since 1960s

The flu jab blunder contributed to the largest spike in deaths in a generation, new figures from the Office for National Statistics have shown.

An extra 28,189 people died last year compared with 2014, the largest percentage increase since 1968. The majority of the excess deaths, 24,000, were people aged over 75, many of whom died from flu or dementia.

There were 16,415 excess deaths last winter, with flu likely to be a major explanatory factor compared to 577 the previous year.

The number of deaths in England and Wales was so high that it has lowered life expectancy for girls born this year by two months to 79.3, and boys by three months to 82.9, the first fall in two decades.

The decision about which strains of flu are likely to be circulating are taken 12 months before the winter flu season by the World Health Organisation, with different vaccines recommended for the Northern and Southern hemispheres.

It takes from February through to September to produce sufficient quantities of the flu vaccine. And if a change in the virus is detected once production has started it is not possible to change it.

Americans don't know a lot about the Zika virus, the infectious disease that's been linked to birth defects and is creeping steadily closer to the U.S., according to a new poll that found about 4 in 10 say they've heard little to nothing about the mosquito-borne threat.

Even among people who've been following the Zika saga at least a little, many aren't sure whether there's a vaccine or treatment (which there isn't) or if there's any way the virus can spread other than through mosquito bites.
