Guinea releases last 68 people from Ebola quarantine

The final 68 people who had been in contact with an Ebola patient were released from quarantine on Saturday, said a senior health official, raising hopes of an end to the disease in the last West African country with confirmed cases.

The world's worst Ebola epidemic, which hopped borders to kill more than 11,300 people and devastate already fragile West African economies, has already been declared over in Liberia and Sierra Leone. But Guinea, where the outbreak began, has had a more difficult time eradicating the disease.

Rare TB case shows difficulty diagnosing, treating children

When a 2-year-old returned sick from a visit to India, U.S. doctors suspected tuberculosis even though standard tests said no. It would take three months to confirm she had an extreme form of the disease — a saga that highlights the desperate need for better ways to fight TB in youngsters in countries that can't afford such creative care.

Guinea Health Unit Reports No Confirmed Ebola Cases for 17 Days

Guinea has recorded 17 days without a new confirmed case of Ebola and a two-week-old infant remains the only person at a treatment center in the capital, Conakry, the National Coordinating Unit for the Fight Against Ebola said.

Guinea's last Ebola patient recovers in Conakry

The last known Ebola patient in Guinea, a 21-day-old baby girl, has recovered at a treatment centre in the capital, Conakry, health officials say.

A spokesman for Guinea's Ebola co-ordination unit said two tests on the baby had been negative.

Guinea will be declared officially free of Ebola if no new cases are reported in the next six weeks.

The epidemic, which began in Guinea, has killed more than 11,000 people in West Africa.

Swaziland makes progress in quest to eliminate malaria

Swaziland could eliminate malaria by the end of 2016 or in early 2017, likely making it the first mainland country in sub-Saharan Africa to get rid of the deadly disease, according to an international health expert.

Namibia, Botswana and South Africa are also making "excellent progress" toward eliminating malaria, said Richard Feachem, director of the Global Health Group at the University of California in San Francisco.

Gene found that could make common bacteria resistant to antibiotics

GUANGZHOU, China, Nov. 19 (UPI) -- Scientists in China found a gene that makes the common bacteria Enterobacteriaceae resistant to "last-resort" antibiotics, which could pose a serious health risk if passed to other, more dangerous types of bacteria.

Set back for Liberia, again.

Ebola crisis: Liberia confirms fresh cases

The three patients include a 10-year-old boy from Paynesville, a suburb of the capital Monrovia.

All people with the symptom have been isolated, WHO spokeswoman Margaret Harris told the BBC.

Liberia has seen more than 10,000 Ebola cases and more than 4,000 deaths.

The country's Health Minister Bernice Dahn said six of the boy's relatives and other high-risk contacts have been taken to an Ebola Treatment Unit in Paynesville.

Scary indeed.
According to the WHO these four bacteria cause some of the most common infections.
MRSA, E.Coli, S.Pneumoniae and K.Pneumoniae.
We are approaching what doctors are calling the “antibiotic apocalypse”, where deadly superbugs become resistant to our drugs. Discover the countries where the problem is most acute.

Once I had to do a surgery here at a hospital and when I was there they told me that have had a MRSA "outbreak" but it was now clean. I was asked to sign a document before they proceeded...
I'm a bit surprised that the US has so many MRSA resistant bacterias.
Best way to not get infected is stay away from hospitals.

very true but if you have to go in to a hospital I would check out the infection rates things like golden staff are very hard to get rid off inside hospitals .

I know of a few that had to be shut down and demolished because of the infection rates of Gold Staff . If it's in the walls and building they can't do anything else but rebuild the hospital

There are two kind of staff.
There are doctors and then there are the rest.
I dont know how often this happen but some doctors think they dont have bacterias and therefore can ignore safety rules.
My GF worked at a secured ward when suddenly a doctor came in without cleaning himself.
He got p***d off when she told him to leave!

Liberia monitors over 150 Ebola contacts as virus re-emerges

Liberia has placed 153 people under surveillance as it seeks to control a new Ebola outbreak in the capital more than two months after the country was declared free of the virus, health officials said.

Three Ebola cases emerged in Liberia on Friday. The first of the new patients was a 15-year-old boy called Nathan Gbotoe from Paynesville, a suburb east of the capital Monrovia. Two other family members have since been confirmed as positive and they are all hospitalized.

Study: WHO response to Ebola outbreak too slow

WASHINGTON, Nov. 23 (UPI) -- The Ebola outbreak in West Africa that started in 2013 was 10 times worse than all the ones before it combined, and a new report says a slow response from the World Health Organization may be to blame.

Ebola crisis: Liberia boy dies after fresh cases

A 15-year-old boy has died of Ebola in Liberia less than three months after the country was declared free of the virus, officials have told the BBC.

He tested positive last week and died late on Monday at a treatment centre near the capital, Monrovia, Francis Kateh, the chief medical officer, said.

His father and brother are being treated for Ebola at the centre.
