Jordan reports 3 new cases of MERS virus weekly

Jordan on Sunday reported a new case of the Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) coronavirus infection that has been spreading throughout the region, the state-run Petra news agency said.

The case for a man in his late 50s was the third reported in Jordan in less than a week, the Mohammad Abdullat, head of communicable diseases department at the Health Ministry , said in a statement on Sunday.

FREETOWN, Sierra Leone (AP) — Health officials in Sierra Leone on Sunday confirmed an Ebola death less than a week after the country's last known patient was discharged from a hospital.

Samples from the body of a 67-year-old woman who died recently in Kambia district in the country's north came back positive for the deadly disease, said chief medical officer Dr. Brima Kargbo.

MERS infections continue in capital

RIYADH: The Ministry of Health announced on Friday that two more people were infected with the Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) coronavirus.
While no deaths were announced, the virus has already killed 26 people in just two weeks, from Aug. 16 to 28, the highest spike in cases in recent times, all likely caused by transmission of the virus at Riyadh’s National Guard Hospital.

Saudi Arabia may ban anyone in contact with MERS patients from performing Hajj

RIYADH, Aug. 28 (Xinhua) -- Saudi Arabia is mulling banning those who have been in contact with Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) coronavirus patients from performing Hajj this year, according to local newspaper on Friday.

This will be part of many precaution measures to ensure the Hajj season free of the contagious disease, an official from the Health Ministry told the local Al Eqtisadiya newspaper.

Sounds sensible and it would be better to be safe than sorry 1 million go the Hajj from all over the world and that would be the quickest way to spread a Pandemic

The person did not travel to an area where plague is common. No other information about the patient is known at this time.

MERS virus kills 19 in week in Saudi Arabia: Ministry

Deaths from the MERS coronavirus have surged in Saudi Arabia ahead of the hajj pilgrimage, with 19 fatalities recorded in a week, according to health ministry statistics.

A total of 502 people died in the kingdom since the virus first appeared in 2012, according to updated figures posted on the ministry’s website, including 19, all Saudis, since last Thursday.

CDC to doctors: Keep an eye out for plague

Doctors should think about the possibility of plague when they see patients with flu-like symptoms this summer and should ask if they've been camping, hiking or around dead rodents, federal health officials said Tuesday.

Universal flu vaccine comes closer, scientists say

Researchers say they are closer to developing a vaccine to give life-long protection against any type of flu, after promising trials in animals.

Two separate US teams have found success with an approach that homes in on a stable part of the flu virus.

That should remove the problem with current flu vaccines which must be given anew each year because they focus on the mutating part of the virus.
