Global health rules need teeth: Ebola panel chief

Getting 196 countries to report disease outbreaks to the World Health Organization will take more than just the legal text of the 2005 International Health Regulations, a global health expert charged with assessing how the rules fared during the Ebola pandemic said on Tuesday.

A must watch Lynn.

It seems like we wait for a disastrous disease outbreak before we get serious about making a vaccine for it. Seth Berkley lays out the market realities and unbalanced risks behind why we aren't making vaccines for the world's biggest diseases.

CDC to doctors: Keep an eye out for plague

Doctors should think about the possibility of plague when they see patients with flu-like symptoms this summer and should ask if they've been camping, hiking or around dead rodents, federal health officials said Tuesday.

Eleven cases of plague have been recorded in the U.S. this year, and three people have died.

Plague? Rats. Europe in the middle ages comes to mind when one third of the population died.
I think the only mammal that have more individuals than humans are rats...

Saudi Arabia may ban anyone in contact with MERS patients from performing Hajj

RIYADH, Aug. 28 (Xinhua) -- Saudi Arabia is mulling banning those who have been in contact with Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) coronavirus patients from performing Hajj this year, according to local newspaper on Friday.

This will be part of many precaution measures to ensure the Hajj season free of the contagious disease, an official from the Health Ministry told the local Al Eqtisadiya newspaper.

Sounds sensible and it would be better to be safe than sorry 1 million go the Hajj from all over the world and that would be the quickest way to spread a Pandemic

MERS infections continue in capital

RIYADH: The Ministry of Health announced on Friday that two more people were infected with the Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) coronavirus.
While no deaths were announced, the virus has already killed 26 people in just two weeks, from Aug. 16 to 28, the highest spike in cases in recent times, all likely caused by transmission of the virus at Riyadh’s National Guard Hospital.

Ebola update:

Experts to Investigate New Ebola Case in North Sierra Leone

FREETOWN, Sierra Leone — Ebola experts are in Sierra Leone's Kambia district investigating a case that emerged less than a week after the country's last known patient was discharged from a hospital, a World Health Organization spokeswoman said Monday.

Once the source of transmission is found and contacts are traced, a vaccination trial will also begin in the northern Sierra Leone area, WHO spokeswoman Dr. Margaret Harris said.

New Ebola death confirmed in Sierra Leone

It comes as a setback to the country's effort to eradicate the deadly disease.

Sierra Leone was celebrating last week when it discharged its last known Ebola patient from hospital.

News of the new case means the country is no longer Ebola-free. High-risk contacts of the woman have been identified, isolated and will now be watched for symptoms.

The National Ebola Response Centre is assessing whether to isolate the whole village of Sella in the Kambia district where the woman, who was in her mid-60s, died.

Outbreak of rare, mutated poliovirus that originated from vaccine in Ukraine leaves two children paralyzed

Poliovirus has returned to Europe after a five year reprieve, paralyzing a 4-year-old and 11-year-old in the Ukraine, the World Health Organization said Wednesday.

The WHO said the two cases were in the southwestern part of the country -- bordering Romania, Hungary, Slovakia and Poland -- and that the strain responsible, vaccine-derived poliovirus type 1 or cVDPV1, may still be a threat to the region.
