Wet weather blamed for record human plague cases in Colorado

Wet weather has been plaguing Colorado for two years.

Literally. The state is seeing a record number of cases of human plague, a deadly disease imported to North America a century ago.

Since 2014, 12 residents have contracted the flea-borne disease, and two have died this year. By comparison, a total of eight people were infected during the previous nine years.

Senegal Still Vigilant Against Ebola

Ebola crisis was not a financial crisis for Dallas area taxpayers

Dallas-area taxpayers picked up the tab for more than $825,000 in costs related to the Ebola outbreak last fall, ranging from cleanup and overtime expenses to barbecue dinners and special T-shirts.

Most of the costs — more than $600,000 — were paid by Dallas County, which led the multi-agency response last October.

Sierra Leone records zero new Ebola infections

There were no new Ebola cases reported last week according to the WHO.

At the height of the outbreak Sierra Leone was reporting more than 500 new cases a week. Last week, for the first time since May last year, there were zero new cases.

But authorities are warning against complacency.

Yosemite plague: Camp ground closed after second case

US health officials have closed a portion of Yosemite National Park after it emerged that a second tourist might have contracted plague.

Authorities believe the disease, which is treatable with antibiotics, was spread by squirrels and fleas.

The tourist's camp site - the Tuolumne Meadows Campground - will be closed until Friday as workers treat the area with insecticide.

A California child fell ill last month, but has recovered.

Patient with possible Ebola taken to NYC hospital

A person who recently visited West Africa was rushed to Bellevue Hospital with Ebola-like symptoms Wednesday, FDNY officials said.

The patient was suffering from symptoms associated with the deadly virus, and fit the FDNY’s “criteria for fever travel,” according to a spokesperson.

Two separate US teams have found success with an approach that homes in on a stable part of the flu virus.

That should remove the problem with current flu vaccines which must be given anew each year because they focus on the mutating part of the virus.
