Wet weather blamed for record human plague cases in Colorado

Wet weather has been plaguing Colorado for two years.

Literally. The state is seeing a record number of cases of human plague, a deadly disease imported to North America a century ago.

Since 2014, 12 residents have contracted the flea-borne disease, and two have died this year. By comparison, a total of eight people were infected during the previous nine years.

Senegal Still Vigilant Against Ebola

DAKAR, SENEGAL—

Senegal was largely able to avoid last year's Ebola epidemic in West Africa, recording just one case of the deadly virus. But even with the outbreak mostly contained, doctors say the country cannot let down its guard.

Dallas Texas, Ebola outbreak.

Ebola crisis was not a financial crisis for Dallas area taxpayers

Dallas-area taxpayers picked up the tab for more than $825,000 in costs related to the Ebola outbreak last fall, ranging from cleanup and overtime expenses to barbecue dinners and special T-shirts.

Most of the costs — more than $600,000 — were paid by Dallas County, which led the multi-agency response last October.

Sierra Leone records zero new Ebola infections

There were no new Ebola cases reported last week according to the WHO.

At the height of the outbreak Sierra Leone was reporting more than 500 new cases a week. Last week, for the first time since May last year, there were zero new cases.

But authorities are warning against complacency.

Yosemite plague: Camp ground closed after second case

US health officials have closed a portion of Yosemite National Park after it emerged that a second tourist might have contracted plague.

Authorities believe the disease, which is treatable with antibiotics, was spread by squirrels and fleas.

The tourist's camp site - the Tuolumne Meadows Campground - will be closed until Friday as workers treat the area with insecticide.

A California child fell ill last month, but has recovered.

Patient with possible Ebola taken to NYC hospital

A person who recently visited West Africa was rushed to Bellevue Hospital with Ebola-like symptoms Wednesday, FDNY officials said.

The patient was suffering from symptoms associated with the deadly virus, and fit the FDNY’s “criteria for fever travel,” according to a spokesperson.

The battle against the deadly Ebola virus has reached a milestone, with no new cases being reported for a whole week.

Ebola Outbreak: Sierra Leone Finally Ebola-Free

Sierra Leone's long-running Ebola epidemic, which has claimed 4,000 lives and infected more than 13,000, has finally ground to a halt, with no new cases being reported in the country for a week. The country took the hardest hit in the epidemic, making the week-long period of no new Ebola cases a very welcome milestone in the battle against the disease.

MERS Cases Increasing in Saudi Arabia, And The Hajj Is Coming

When last we checked in on the elusive disease MERS—Middle East Respiratory Syndrome, caused by a virus related to the cause of the worldwide SARS epidemic in 2003—it had been brewing in the Gulf states for three years, but was triggering international alarm because of an outbreak in Korea.

With Many Ebola Survivors Ailing, Doctors Evaluate Situation

Lingering health problems afflicting many of the roughly 13,000 Ebola survivors have galvanized global and local health officials to find out how widespread the ailments are, and how to remedy them.

The World Health Organization calls it an emergency within an emergency. Many of the survivors have vision and hearing issues. Some others experience physical and emotional pains, fatigue and other problems. The medical community is negotiating uncharted waters as it tries to measure the scale of this problem that comes on the tail end of the biggest Ebola outbreak in history.

Saudi Arabia Reports 6 New Cases of MERS

RIYADH—Saudi Arabia reported Sunday six new cases of Middle East respiratory syndrome, the latest sign of a spreading viral disease ahead of an annual religious pilgrimage that brings millions of visitors to the country.

The surging number of cases—the largest since the peak of the last MERS outbreak in the summer of 2014—comes as Saudi Arabia prepares to welcome next month more than two million pilgrims to the Muslim holy city of Mecca for the annual hajj pilgrimage.

Universal flu vaccine comes closer, scientists say

Researchers say they are closer to developing a vaccine to give life-long protection against any type of flu, after promising trials in animals.

Two separate US teams have found success with an approach that homes in on a stable part of the flu virus.

That should remove the problem with current flu vaccines which must be given anew each year because they focus on the mutating part of the virus.
