Global health leaders will ask G7 leaders this weekend to back the creation of a specialist rapid response unit to tackle outbreaks of infectious killer diseases.

The move reflects how the World Health Organization in particular was caught unprepared last year by Ebola, which spread through three West African countries, has killed 11,000 people, and will not be stamped out before the end of this year.

South Korean officials row over handling of Mers outbreak

A row has broken out between South Korean government officials over their handling of an outbreak of Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (Mers).

Health Minister Moon Hyung-pyo accused city officials in the capital, Seoul, of giving out incorrect information which he said would spread alarm.

Four people in South Korea have died and 41 have been infected by Mers.

The outbreak is the largest outside the Middle East, where the disease first appeared in Saudi Arabia in 2012.

Mers can cause fever, breathing problems, pneumonia and kidney failure. The virus has a death rate of 27%, according to the World Health Organization (WHO). There is currently no vaccine.

South Korean government announces strengthened MERS measures after 5th death

SEOUL, Korea, Republic Of -- A fifth person in South Korea has died of the MERS virus, as the government announced Sunday it was strengthening measures to stem the spread of the disease and public fear.

Sixty-four people have been infected by the Middle East Respiratory Syndrome since last month in the largest outbreak outside the Middle East. Hundreds of schools have closed and hundreds of people quarantined.

Leaders of the Group of Seven industrial nations pledged on Monday to wipe out Ebola but offered little in terms of concrete action, disappointing non-governmental organisations.

G7 leaders said in a communique at the end of a two-day summit in the Bavarian Alps that they would offer help to at least 60 nations, including in West Africa, over the next five years to help prevent outbreaks from turning into epidemics.

Exclusive: Patient With Extreme Form of TB Sent to NIH

A female patient with an extremely hard-to-treat form of tuberculosis is being treated at the National Institutes of Health outside Washington D.C., and federal and state officials are now tracking down hundreds of people who may have been in contact with her.

The woman traveled to at least three states before she sought treatment from a U.S. doctor. While TB is not easily caught by casual contact, extensively drug resistant (XDR) TB is so dangerous that health officials will have to make a concerted effort to warn anyone who may be at risk.

"The patient was transferred to the NIH via special air and ground ambulances," the NIH said in a statement.

Study: Ebola virus didn't mutate into more dangerous strain

The Ebola virus in West Africa that has killed 11,000 is not more virulent than prior strains as had been feared, according to a study published Tuesday.

Researchers with the National Institutes of Health found the pathogen — still on the loose in Sierra Leone and Guinea — is no more deadly, and might even be weaker, than the original virus that first emerged in Africa in 1976.

Ebola crisis: UN's Ebola mission HQ in Ghana to close

The UN's emergency Ebola response headquarters in Ghana's capital, Accra, is to close as the outbreak slows.

The head of the mission, Peter Graaff, met the Ghanaian president to thank the country for hosting the agency since it was set up in September last year.

A small team will stay until the end of June to co-ordinate air operations, the agency, known as Unmeer, said.

CDC, state officials track down people possibly exposed to rare form of TB. Woman at NIH in stable condition

Health officials in at least three states are working with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to track down people who may have come in contact with a woman being treated at the National Institutes of Health for a rare form of drug-resistant tuberculosis.

The woman, whose name has not been released, arrived from India at Chicago O’Hare International Airport in April with an active, infectious case of the disease, CDC officials said.

There are people in those countries that even when having all the symptoms of Ebole that denies that.
A big problem in those cases is to to track them down and find out who that persons they have met.

Decline in Ebola cases stalls in West Africa, UN health agency reports

11 June 2015 – The number of Ebola cases in West Africa has increased for the second straight week, with the number of cases that arose from unknown sources of infection highlighting the challenges still faced in finding and eliminating every chain of transmission, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).

And the UN Mission for Ebola Emergency Response (UNMEER) reported today that “five new Ebola cases were confirmed in Sierra Leone on 8 June, the highest number in a single day for many weeks.”

The UN mission also drew attention to the latest progress report in the response to the Ebola outbreak at the 210-day mark since the establishment of UNMEER, which warned that “the outbreak is not over and the response efforts must be sustained until we get to zero cases throughout the region and are able to stay at zero for several months.”

Juvenile camels 'key source' of Mers

An international team looked for evidence of current or past infection in more than 800 dromedary camels.

They found that more than 90% of animals became infected by the age of two and virus shedding was more common in calves than in adults.

The scientists argue that changes in animal husbandry may reduce the occurrence of human Mers infections.

The study is published in the journal Emerging Infectious Diseases.

The first reports of human Mers coronavirus infection emerged in June 2012, although cases are likely to have occurred before then.

Sierra Leone Leader Imposes Curfew in Bid to Halt Ebola


Sierra Leone's president imposed new restrictions Friday preventing people from entering or leaving two chiefdoms in the northern part of the country that are experiencing a resurgence of Ebola.

Mers South Korea: WHO says more cases anticipated

South Korea's outbreak of Middle East Respiratory Syndrome is "large and complex" and more cases are expected, World Health Organization experts say.

But while it was premature to declare the outbreak over, the WHO said it had "found no evidence" of the Mers virus spreading wider in the community.

About 140 people have been infected since the start of the outbreak last month. Fourteen are known to have died.
