Ebola 'lives on in eye of US survivor'

The Ebola virus has been detected in the eye of a US doctor who had already recovered from the illness.

The medic, who caught the bug while working in Sierra Leone, had blurred eyesight and pain two months after being declared Ebola-free.

Scientists say his eye infection presents no risk to the public.

But reporting in the New England Journal of Medicine they warn that research is needed to see if Ebola can also linger in other parts of the body.

Liberia set to be declared Ebola-free

Liberia is a day away from being declared Ebola-free but the country remains on high alert, with neighbouring Sierra Leone and Guinea still reporting cases of the infectious disease.

If there are no new infections, the World Health Organisation (WHO) will declare Liberia Ebola-free on Saturday, 42 days – or twice the incubation period of the virus – after the last case was reported on 27 March.

Liberia Nearly Ebola-Free, But Could the Virus Come Back?

Liberia is set to be declared Ebola-free on Saturday (May 9), but experts say there's still a risk that the disease could reappear in the country.

The last person in Liberia to have Ebola died on March 27, which was 41 days ago. Health officials typically wait 42 days to declare a country Ebola-free, because this is twice as long as the 21-day incubation period of the virus (the time it takes for a person infected with the virus to show symptoms).

Drug-resistant 'superbug' strain of typhoid spreads worldwide


An antibiotic-resistant "superbug" strain of typhoid fever has spread globally, driven by a single family of the bacteria, called H58, according to the findings of a large international study.

Italian nurse back from Sierra Leone tests positive for Ebola

ROME --May 12
An Italian nurse who returned to Italy last week after working in Sierra Leone has tested positive for Ebola, the health ministry said on Tuesday.

The man began to feel unwell on Sunday evening and was taken to a local hospital in Sardinia, two days after coming back from the west African state where he had been treating patients for the often deadly disease.

Liberia's Ebola-Free, But Not Out of The Woods Yet

Liberia was declared Ebola-free on Saturday, with 42 days gone since the last victim died there. But that doesn't mean the country's free of the effects of the deadly disease.

Ebola can come back over the border at any time from Guinea and Sierra Leone. And the disruptive effects of Ebola mean vaccination programs have been suspended. Many people are scared to come to clinics for treatments for malaria, pneumonia and other diseases or even to have babies.

Guinea Ebola Cases Climb High Due To Transmissions At Funerals

CONAKRY, May 15 (Reuters) - Guinea has seen a spate of new Ebola cases due to transmissions at funerals, a worrying sign for the African nation as it seeks to stamp out a year-long epidemic that has killed over 11,000 people across the region, a health official said on Friday.

According to figures released on Tuesday by the special government department set up to fight the disease, treatment clinics were handling just eight confirmed Ebola cases.

"Today we have 27 sick in our treatment centres, including 18 confirmed cases," the department's spokesman Fode Tass Sylla told Reuters. "Yesterday alone we recorded five sick."

Sylla said all the new patients had contracted the disease at funeral ceremonies.
