Ebola Virus Lingers in Patient's Eyeball Even After Recovery, Study Says Ebola 'lives on in eye of US survivor' The Ebola virus has been detected in the eye of a US doctor who had already recovered from the illness. The medic, who caught the bug while working in Sierra Leone, had blurred eyesight and pain two months after being declared Ebola-free. Scientists say his eye infection presents no risk to the public. But reporting in the New England Journal of Medicine they warn that research is needed to see if Ebola can also linger in other parts of the body. http://www.bbc.com/news/health-32657358 |

Yea! Liberia set to be declared Ebola-free Liberia is a day away from being declared Ebola-free but the country remains on high alert, with neighbouring Sierra Leone and Guinea still reporting cases of the infectious disease. If there are no new infections, the World Health Organisation (WHO) will declare Liberia Ebola-free on Saturday, 42 days – or twice the incubation period of the virus – after the last case was reported on 27 March. http://www.theguardian.com/world/2015/may/08/liberia-set-to-be-declared-ebola-free |

Liberia Nearly Ebola-Free, But Could the Virus Come Back? Liberia is set to be declared Ebola-free on Saturday (May 9), but experts say there's still a risk that the disease could reappear in the country. The last person in Liberia to have Ebola died on March 27, which was 41 days ago. Health officials typically wait 42 days to declare a country Ebola-free, because this is twice as long as the 21-day incubation period of the virus (the time it takes for a person infected with the virus to show symptoms). http://www.livescience.com/50787-liberia-ebola-free.html |

Liberia Declared Ebola-Free, but Outbreak Continues in Guinea and Sierra Leone Liberia was declared free from Ebola by the government and the World Health Organisation (WHO) on Saturday after 42 days without a new case of the virus, which killed more than 4,700 people there during a year-long epidemic. https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/liberia-declared-ebola-free-but-outbreak-continues-in-guinea-and-sierra-leone/ |

Drug-resistant 'superbug' strain of typhoid spreads worldwide An antibiotic-resistant "superbug" strain of typhoid fever has spread globally, driven by a single family of the bacteria, called H58, according to the findings of a large international study. The research, involving some 74 scientists in almost two dozen countries, is one of the most comprehensive sets of genetic data on a human infectious agent and paints a worrying scene of an "ever-increasing public health threat", they said. http://www.reuters.com/article/2015/05/11/us-health-typhoid-idUSKBN0NW1E920150511 |

Vaccines are available -- although, due to limited cost effectiveness, not widely used in poorer countries -- and regular strains of the infection can be treated with antibiotic drugs. However, this study found that the H58 "superbug" version, which is resistant to multiple types of antibiotics, is now becoming dominant. Nature strikes back... |

Italian nurse back from Sierra Leone tests positive for Ebola ROME --May 12 An Italian nurse who returned to Italy last week after working in Sierra Leone has tested positive for Ebola, the health ministry said on Tuesday. The man began to feel unwell on Sunday evening and was taken to a local hospital in Sardinia, two days after coming back from the west African state where he had been treating patients for the often deadly disease. http://in.reuters.com/article/2015/05/12/italy-ebola-idINL5N0Y35RY20150512 |

Liberia's Ebola-Free, But Not Out of The Woods Yet Liberia was declared Ebola-free on Saturday, with 42 days gone since the last victim died there. But that doesn't mean the country's free of the effects of the deadly disease. Ebola can come back over the border at any time from Guinea and Sierra Leone. And the disruptive effects of Ebola mean vaccination programs have been suspended. Many people are scared to come to clinics for treatments for malaria, pneumonia and other diseases or even to have babies. http://www.nbcnews.com/storyline/ebola-virus-outbreak/liberias-ebola-free-not-out-woods-yet-n357301 |

update: Latest Ebola data rule out rapid mutation The Ebola virus evolved as it spread through West Africa last year — but its mutation rate did not accelerate, as some had thought, according to an analysis of genetic sequence data published on 13 May in Nature1. The data offer reassurance that the scope of the current epidemic did not make it possible for the virus to evolve into a more virulent or deadlier form. http://www.nature.com/news/latest-ebola-data-rule-out-rapid-mutation-1.17554 |

She's back. 'Ebola nurse' chastises Christie in article, calls her N.J. quarantine a 'political stunt' Time has not softened "Ebola nurse" Kaci Hickox's view of her forced stay in New Jersey. Nearly seven months after she was released from quarantine in a Newark hospital and escorted out of the state, she still has questions about her treatment here. The nurse, who was the first returning Ebola worker to encounter Gov. Chris Christie's rapidly evolving quarantine policy last October, detailed her concerns in a blistering essay appearing tomorrow in Suffolk University Law School's Journal of Health and Biomedical Law. http://www.nj.com/healthfit/index.ssf/2015/05/ebola_nurse_chastises_christie_calls_her_nj_quaran.html |

Ahead of WHA68 next week, a key paragraph from the 1st report of the WHO Ebola external assessment panel. Each global health crisis has shown the tragic consequenses, including those in the social and economic spheres, of the failure of countries to invest in global public goods for health. https://twitter.com/Global_ErinH/status/599326168077246464/photo/1 |

He faked Ebola. Ohio man indicted after police say he claimed to have Ebola A Cleveland man claimed he'd contracted the Ebola virus in 2014, but he's now been indicted as police say he made the whole thing up. WEWS reports emergency workers were sent to the aid of James Midgette last year after he called 911 saying he'd become infected with Ebola. http://www.aol.com/article/2015/05/15/ohio-man-indicted-after-police-say-he-claimed-to-have-ebola/21183939/ |

Guinea Ebola Cases Climb High Due To Transmissions At Funerals CONAKRY, May 15 (Reuters) - Guinea has seen a spate of new Ebola cases due to transmissions at funerals, a worrying sign for the African nation as it seeks to stamp out a year-long epidemic that has killed over 11,000 people across the region, a health official said on Friday. According to figures released on Tuesday by the special government department set up to fight the disease, treatment clinics were handling just eight confirmed Ebola cases. "Today we have 27 sick in our treatment centres, including 18 confirmed cases," the department's spokesman Fode Tass Sylla told Reuters. "Yesterday alone we recorded five sick." Sylla said all the new patients had contracted the disease at funeral ceremonies. http://www.gnnliberia.com/articles/2015/05/16/guinea-ebola-cases-climb-high-due-transmissions-funerals |
