I think Grant mentioned LED street lights. I don't know if they're switching to those here, but I just started seeing LED bulbs in the store for home use. Seems like it wasn't that long ago when CFL's were the new thing, but I never have liked them because they take time to warm up. Still prefer incandescent's, but I think the LED's supposedly use much less energy and last a lot longer. I want to replace all my old Christmas tree multi-color mini-lite strands with LED's. The light is as real as Edison knew. A 100w version uses 18w real power. They last 20 some years. Get some... Believe me, when CFLs came out and claimed to have light as good as natural, I hesitated, and for good reason. They were full of BS. The Cree light bulb has been personally tested and approved in the Kitty Labs, and I guarantee you shall be suprised and pleased. "Learn from yesterday. Live for today. Hope for tomorrow." The "Murray" bit refers to the Murray River (named in honor of Sir George Murray) which is 1 of the main rivers that make up the Murray–Darling basin which is the system where those fish are found DG. Hopefully the dew will be dry here soon so I can get a mow in before Beer O'clock. Cheers. |

There's a nice spot just upstream of the village with a big hill blocking out the village street lights where you can star-gaze while trying to catch a Murray Cod. ;-) Interesting fish, I thought it resembled a Bass and after I looked it up they are related as species of 'temperate perch'. The only question I have after reading the Wiki is Who the hell was Murray? The scientific name of Murray cod derives from an early Australian fish researcher with the surname McCulloch and the river from which the explorer Major Mitchell first scientifically described the species, the Peel River.[2] This was for a number of years changed to M. peelii peelii to differentiate Murray cod from Mary River cod, which were designated as a subspecies of Murray cod. However, as of 2010, Mary River cod have been raised to full species status (M. mariensis),[3] thus Murray cod have reverted simply to M. peelii. McCulloch, Major Mitchell, Mary river, M. peelii peelii, lot's of 'M's but no Murray. ";~D) "Sour Grapes make a bitter Whine." <(0)> |

There are no big city lights to mess up my view of the heavens Not at all Celt, at times I wish I could but theese days close to town is the best for me. In my childhood I did live in the country and loved it. Cheers everybody Life is short so don't sip Beer speaks, people mumble |

G'morning everyone, from another busy morning down under. We're still getting more rain than frosts here atm DG. :-( Star-gazing is great here in the highlands and you only have to walk 5mins out of the village (if the street lights go out then no walking required) and you feel that you could touch them all. Beer O'clock in 3.5hrs so I better get a few more things before it arrives. ;-) Cheers. |

No problems here. Just a road maintainence issue. It is not that isolated. There are large acreage lots out here. Size varies from 2 to 10 acres. It is a lot quieter out here. Had to laugh, one time about 7 or 8 years ago the town I live in was switching over to a thermal generating plant and the town was dark for about 6 hours. As luck has it, it was a very clear night, man all the stars one could see that night. Now they are switching to LED street lights which makes it harder to see anything in town. Cheers everybody Life is short so don't sip Beer speaks, people mumble |

I have a few real good places to go, no city or town lights and high enough so you have no ground fog to bother you. One place has plenty of bugs though. :)) Cheers everybody Life is short so don't sip Beer speaks, people mumble |

Cheers! Mike. May your beer be cold and bold. The frost should 'slow' the need for mowing, Wiggo, I've the opposite problem due mostly to the same conditions the Admiral described. Not as much rain as OK but still 10 times normal. I managed to get a period of time dry enough to mow yesterday and it's supposed to 'clear up' briefly in the middle of the week(I hope that doesn't mean 'clear up to our butts'!). The night sky here used to be awesome when I was a boy, now I have to drive 100 miles east or 60 miles into the mountains to use my telescope for anything other than moon gazing. The biggest pollution problem on earth is artificial light. Wiggo, you are extremely fortunate the scourge hasn't spread greatly there. Although the wildfires do make a bright light from space. And you have the sky with all the great views of the really impressive astronomy targets. Cheers! And enjoy the nighttime while we still have one......... "Sour Grapes make a bitter Whine." <(0)> |

I'm sure it's better for star-gazing, too. I can always see the Dippers, and the Belt of Orion, and Mars and Venus, but that's about it. The mind is a weird and mysterious place

That's a lot of rain, Admiral. There's certain things about the country that appeal to me, but the dirt road and isolation in emergencies does not. I hope you're ok. The mind is a weird and mysterious place

G'day Mike and enjoy those beers. Office hours has finally finished and I got a load of washing on the line, plus a couple of other jobs that didn't get done over the weekend, so there's only 90mins to go until Beer O'clock here (sadly it's Monday here). Cheers. |
