Vic, can you do a quick reprise as to why you think the cooler that you tried to return has failed?

(I know you probably gave the reason, but it is lost in a rather rambling story somewhere)

Vic, I've just had a look for EVGA boards giving the "FF" error - one person reports that leaving the battery out for a few hours cured the problem (he had tried shorter periods of time)

http://forums.evga.com/Motherboard-code-starts-up-at-quotFFquot-but-computer-doesn39t-boot-m1249346.aspx
(Post about leaving the battery out for a few hour is about half way down the page)

Its worth a try - take the battery out before you go to bed, then put it back in before you have lunch, that should be equivalent to him "going out for a bit".

I do need to soon enough upgrade My computers router to Gigabit, since My ISP TWC is upgrading the Internet Service here to at about 300Mbps(MAXX), though My service will be limited to about 100/10Mbps, My SB6121 modem, cat6 cable and PC are all gigabit capable, so I'm looking at a Netgear WDNR4000 as a replacement router, since it is Gigabit compatible, My current router tops out at 100Mbps.

How about a WNR3500L?

That would do, if the foot can be detached, like on the WDNR4000, which used is about $31, though it's not an immediate purchase, possibly in April or May. Where My router is at, has a 7.5" height limit, so I lay My router on its side. There is a slight possibility of Me getting the router earlier, but I have to see what My finances are like around Jan 2016.

Guess what I am no longer using at my house, I upgraded to a TP-Link Archer C2.

And yes, the foot comes off.

Of course my max internet speed here is only 6Mbps.

I upgraded all of my home internet gear as a crimbo present to myself. I had an old SB5100 which was nearly at its limit with my 25Mb service. So I went with nearly the same modem as yours I think. It's either the SB6121 or the SB6141 I don't. However I did go a bit overboard with the router/wireless. Replacing my old 100Mb RV042 with a Cisco RV325 & WAP371.

i don 't think it makes a difference if you use 95 or 130w these 590's are rather power hungry

And given my current experience I would suggest that a single gtx980ti would only be a little behind a gtx690, and a fair way ahead of a gtx590. The biggest gain is the much lower power requirement for the gtx980ti over either the gtx590 or gtx690 - so a lot cheaper to run despite the higher capital cost.

A GTX590 doesn't get anywhere near the gtx690, both are dual processor units, and both are left standing by the current single processor gtx980 & gtx980ti.

Thanks for quite an adventure.

How do you keep your inquisitive cat from putting a paw in the wrong place? Meow!

And how do you keep things from furring up?

Is not a positive side effect at this time of year that your super-crunching means less wasted heat from heaters?

(I'm sure there is some Dutch company that sells compute nodes that are designed as domestic heaters... Free computing as they keep your home warm :-) )

Shiver mi timbers!...

Happy fun crunchin,

And Happy Festivities!
Martin

(And must get to work on a new super cruncher myself soon... The present group are far too out of date...)

Zoom, can you turn the fan on? If so, what about a small piece of towel paper or nasal tissue and put it on side of the fan and see which way it moves, either toward it or away.

From a video from NZXT they say label down toward radiator will push air thru the radiator.

Should help with direction of the fair flow.

For the screws for the radiator are you talking about the screw that goes thru the fan to the radiator or the screws that hold the radiator to the case?

If the latter might try case screws. I had to find some screws to mount a corsair radiator and found some case screws at my local computer store. I believe they are 6-32 screws. (not fans screws as those have too thick diameter)

http://www.officedepot.com/a/products/217165/StarTechcom-Replacement-PC-Mounting-Screws-6/?cm_mmc=PLA-_-Google-_-Computer_Tablet_Accessories-_-217165-VQ6-47886868556-VQ16-c-VQ17-pla-VQ18-online-VQ19-217165-VQ20-76860675716-VQ21-&gclid=CjwKEAiAt_K0BRCzjtv92_HGoR0SJAA9QNn_z2qawMEmdNHRhoiMzOueZ3jWAM-Hp1TgR4TbOioapRoCQX7w_wcB

Have you measured the distance from 1 side of the fans to the radiator? Newegg says the fan is 25 mm diameter. Might be able to use an M4 x 0.7 x 30mm Screw with a washer. Just make sure to see what the depth is before you screw it in so it doesn't damage the radiator (good reason to use the washer for a little height)

Let us know how you do.

The only thing that I want to see is the power bill shock that Vic will get on his face if he ever gets all that outdated power sucking hardware going. ;-)

Cheers.

Whhhheeeeewwwww - I'm glad you are in the USA...I thought my energy bill was high just keeping my herd of crunchers fed with kW, but you are using about three times as much energy as I am, and I pay about four times as much per kW.

I have to agree. It's really fascinating to watch the resourcefulness that you put into building these systems from basically gum and shoestring. Makes me feel rather lazy as I just go off buying new stuff.

Keep it up, Zoom, I'm impressed with how much you manage to do with so little!

On the topic of electricity rates, South Korea has to be the worst. They operate on a tiered system where you pay more for using more power. I can't read my bill because I don't read Hangul, but for the past few months I've been paying around a million won for power, which can be between $850-950 depending upon the exchange rate! I'll be moving to Maryland in a few months on military orders, so I'm eagerly looking forward to paying significantly less to crunch WUs :-)

Electricity may be expensive but I read that South Korea has the fastest overall internet on the planet. I am not positive but rates did not seem too high for that.

I finally got off DSL and now have 8 Times the speed on cable. I think I am getting like 50 Mbps max for $45 month, I was getting 4 Mbps with dls for a few bucks less.

Didn't mean to get off topic but since I had read that a little biot ago I had to inquire.

I stumbled across this guy on YT, who is building weird but wonderful stuff. Like a CPU heat sink on his GPU, and thereby cooling his GPU under full load at 20 degrees centigrade less, against a way lower sound level.

And then that GPU built into his self made PC case, with the motherboard turned sideways so the ports are at the top of the case, and two huge 140mm fans in the bottom taking care of all the cooling.

Maybe it gives ideas. ;-)
