Message 1726136 - Posted: 16 Sep 2015, 5:53:45 UTC - in response to Message 1726110.

I do need to soon enough upgrade My computers router to Gigabit, since My ISP TWC is upgrading the Internet Service here to at about 300Mbps(MAXX), though My service will be limited to about 100/10Mbps, My SB6121 modem, cat6 cable and PC are all gigabit capable, so I'm looking at a Netgear WDNR4000 as a replacement router, since it is Gigabit compatible, My current router tops out at 100Mbps.

How about a WNR3500L?

That would do, if the foot can be detached, like on the WDNR4000, which used is about $31, though it's not an immediate purchase, possibly in April or May. Where My router is at, has a 7.5" height limit, so I lay My router on its side. There is a slight possibility of Me getting the router earlier, but I have to see what My finances are like around Jan 2016.

Guess what I am no longer using at my house, I upgraded to a TP-Link Archer C2.

And yes, the foot comes off.

Of course my max internet speed here is only 6Mbps.

Cool, I'll PM you My address Arkayn. If you are giving it away and I assume you are, in which case I say thanks.

I upgraded all of my home internet gear as a crimbo present to myself. I had an old SB5100 which was nearly at its limit with my 25Mb service. So I went with nearly the same modem as yours I think. It's either the SB6121 or the SB6141 I don't. However I did go a bit overboard with the router/wireless. Replacing my old 100Mb RV042 with a Cisco RV325 & WAP371.

Ok I did some work on an Nvidia GTX590 card that I've had for a while, that case is now getting heavy since the dang thing has 3 GTX590 cards in it and the system has no distilled water in it yet.

The pads look white in the pic cause of the flash from My phone, they're really pink.

I did clean the block where the pads and gpus go, plus there was some dust on this used block and on the card too. Here's the card, uncleaned as of paste and green pads that Nvidia installed.

Here the card is all cleaned up. And in this pic you can see the pads are pink.

Test fitting the block.

Ok now the card has Arctic Silver 5 on the gpus and I'm starting to close the card up. Some pads are installed, being only memory, I decided to use the grey pads only on the back, only 3 screws & washers are used at this point.

Both heatsinks are on the back, all 16 screws are in place, even though like in Golf, there are 18 holes, though 2 are not covered by the block, as they're not important.

Here's the case, an NZXT Switch 810 in Matte Black, which now has 3 GTX590 cards.

Better angle, lots of shiny in there.

With the door on.

The back, DVI ports galore...

And the last pic, for the moment at least, back on the floor.

I took a better pic of the Quad 590 PC(Pegasus). The last pic was not very good, this one is a bit better.

Currently?

ZERO.

That PC is under Construction still.

I still need to repair one Gigabyte GTX590 card, then convert that card to water, buy some black tubing, fittings and either 2 or 3 140mm type Alphacool Monsta Radiators(a 140x140x80mm, a 140x280x80mm and a 140x420x80mm radiator), plus a pump and reservoir, before that a final upgrade, an i7 X5675 cpu(3.06GHz, Hex core cpu and 95w instead of the i7 940 130w Quad core cpu that is in there now). All this will happen, after the 1st of the year, sometime.

i don 't think it makes a difference if you use 95 or 130w these 590's are rather power hungry

Well the 95 and 130 refers to the cpu and yeah I know about the 590's, four 690's would probably be no better, just more expensive to buy.

And given my current experience I would suggest that a single gtx980ti would only be a little behind a gtx690, and a fair way ahead of a gtx590. The biggest gain is the much lower power requirement for the gtx980ti over either the gtx590 or gtx690 - so a lot cheaper to run despite the higher capital cost.

A GTX590 doesn't get anywhere near the gtx690, both are dual processor units, and both are left standing by the current single processor gtx980 & gtx980ti.

Here's a page that pertains to the Do's and Don'ts of water cooling, I found out that one of My PCs has a radiator in the bottom of the case and with fans facing down, this is a big, No, No, there. I got a pair of brackets(radiator mount for a drive bay) to fix that error and an Alphacool 240 Eisberg cpu cooler on the way from Performance PCs to fix My Computer, then I'll be able to at the very least double My output and heat too, at least once I remove the battery and let the PC clear the Bios, then I'll have to shutdown the PC and reinsert the battery on the motherboard, I do have a backup motherboard/cpu in case this fails of course, an Asus Rampage IV Extreme w/an i7 3820 cpu.

At least I have some heat now, temps at night here are dropping, so this is just in time, between what I have now in My crippled PC and a Lasko Ceramic heater that I got from Walmart today, I should be able to stay warm, My gas furnace needs total replacement, $1,821.11 was what I was quoted in writing(it used to be $2,000.00), I'm on a waiting list for a new gas furnace from 'The Community Action Partnership of San Bernardino County', so the cost will be nothing, I will just have grin and bear it, patience, since I have no idea how many are ahead of Me on the list. The heater is in My bedroom and is set for 74F, the temp is reading the room temp of 76F when the pic was taken. Moving the antique on the right meant I had to remove 2 drawers before I could lift the cabinet. The heater is plugged into the outlet directly.

Asap I'll be working on a PC to try and replace this PC, moving a video card's radiator(if the tubing will reach the front(drive bays on a case that is about 24" deep Front to Back), the radiator is in the bottom(and so are 8 screws there, 12 in the top and 4 on the cpu), that is a NO NO I've read) and exchanging a dead CoolerMaster Glacer 240L cpu water cooler for a New Alphacool Eisberg 240 cpu water cooler(the dead cooler has no warranty and might not be salvageable, the New cooler does have a warranty), if that doesn't work even after removing the battery there is rma from EVGA on the EVGA X79 Classified motherboard(minus the i7 3820 cpu) and of course I have an Asus Rampage IV Extreme motherboard w/an i7 3820 cpu to swap in.

Oh and if the tubing won't reach, then I'll have to get a pair of NZXT X31 cpu coolers/radiators for the 2 cards here(one being an EVGA GTX580, the current one being an EVGA GTX570), since the NZXT has 16" tubes.

But I have to get up the energy to do that and My under active thyroid is in control there, pills only made Me feel hotter, though I may get a new prescription and try them again for a year and see what happens, ugh a trip to Doctor Jekyll and to the Vampires for a blood test. Just taking out the trash is hard lately, since I don't do that all the time. Oh and ignore the "401.95" sticker, the price was a lot less than that... Performance PCs put the sticker on the box, why? I don't know. Inventory maybe?

Pictured, the bracket for the radiator in the bottom, and the New Alphacool Eisberg 240 cpu cooler.

Ok I got this cart kit from Amazon for XMAS, it's about 32"Lx18"Wx34.25"H and when assembled fits under the bottom edge of My kitchen countertop, you'd need scissors or a knife, plus a hammer to assemble this, the instructions should be able to be read by almost anybody on Earth, since the instructions are mostly a step by step exploded diagram(there is some english print here, just not much), one thing to note, cat hair is attracted to this, cause a static charge will build during assembly, in My case I built this on carpet in the living room.

The box from Amazon via FedEx, this thing's BIG...

the inner box..

Inspector Grace looking at the pieces prior to assembly.

Hammer time.

The legs are on the top 1st w/a hammer, then the bottom.

Inspector Grace giving the cart a final once over..

All done.

And one pic in the kitchen, like I said, it fits under the countertop.

Ok I got the PC on to the cart, I should have done this before dinner, ugh, dinner made the PC feel more heavy I think, but now the PC is or should be easier to work on, I'm making some progress.

Grace is as usual supervising, this time out of frame on the right on top of My refrigerator.

Merry XMAS folks!

Note: the park manager called Me and said My electric bill was unusually high, since I don't know the exact amount, I'm thinking it might go up to maybe $138 or so, hopefully not. I'll find out more on Dec 22nd, as the Managers office closes at 2pm.

Ok I took the bottom off(Eek! It's bottomless... ;) ), I'd thought I only needed to remove 4 screws, I forgot about the 2 in front, then I removed the 120mm fan and its 4 screws that are connected to a radiator(Antec 620) and removed the cables, getting the left power cable off of the NZXT Kraken G10 AIO video card adapter is a royal pain, why? Cause the adapter interferes with the power cable tab, installing the cable is easy, but pushing that tab down is nearly impossible, I'm going to switch over to one of the generic versions before I install the EVGA GTX570 card into this PC that I'm typing on, just do I can clean the Zotac GTX580 Infinity's radiator, which is a horrible design in itself, just to get decent cooling one has to use 2 fans(Deltas) and they're high cfm types($$) and getting at the radiator is a pain cause the pump is mounted up near the radiator, instead of on the card, at least the block on the card is ok.

Plus I got one 140x25mm AZZA case fan installed back in the case, the 2nd won't fit, why? The Silverstone ST1500 1500w psu is in the way(220mm long psu). I may try a 120mm fan instead, this is not easy and a bit frustrating, both for Me and this case, I'm older and heavier and well the case needs a shorter psu that can handle 4 GTX580 cards, if I want 2 fans in the bottom of the case...

Dusty, but relatively clean, and all 3 cables are ready for the next PC, if I can find 3 compatible electrical hookups in this PC... Yes, I turned the 2D battery led flashlight off(torch to the brits).

Thanks for quite an adventure.

How do you keep your inquisitive cat from putting a paw in the wrong place? Meow!

And how do you keep things from furring up?

Is not a positive side effect at this time of year that your super-crunching means less wasted heat from heaters?

(I'm sure there is some Dutch company that sells compute nodes that are designed as domestic heaters... Free computing as they keep your home warm :-) )

Shiver mi timbers!...

Happy fun crunchin,

And Happy Festivities!
Martin

(And must get to work on a new super cruncher myself soon... The present group are far too out of date...)

Grace is trained and understands a few words in English, like NO.

A vacuum cleaner, at least when I feel up to vacuuming.

Well with the video card clogged with dust and muck from a humidity making swamp cooler(evap cooler, not used anymore since I have real a/c for use when it's not winter), lots of air filters helps, the heater is needed, since the gas heater is down, I am getting some paperwork in the mail for a new gas heater from the CAPSBC, then the two electric heaters can go back in their boxes. Otherwise the PC would keep the place very warm.

The Zotac Infinity GTX580 card I'm currently using has a badly designed radiator/pump arrangement, meaning the pump is mounted next to the radiator, getting two fans on either side was not easy, there is just enough tubing slack to mount a 120x25mm fan between the radiator and the water pump, the other fan is a 120x38mm fan, making cleaning the radiator harder to do than needed, at least the thin radiator is copper(thinner than 25mm), some might think that there is rust on a radiator like this, being there is no steel or iron there, any rust would be green, not a rust color and yeah some idiot thought one was used cause He thought what He saw was rust...

Ok I got the top off and undogged all 12 screws, plus there are 4 more on the motherboard, plus a wire or two to unplug. Then I'll be able to remove the dead Coolermaster Glacer v1 240L cpu cooler and install an Alphacool Eisberg 240 cpu cooler(bought NEW from Performance PCs), one of the 240L fans will go in the bottom of the case, if it'll fit there. Oh and yeah, this case can handle a 480x120x55mm radiator in the top, of course you can't find this AZZA 4000 PC case anymore, the case is a heavy beast and the case is not even fully loaded yet.

I got some more work done on the PC, I separated the fans from the dead cooler, I think I can salvage the fittings and maybe the radiator, hopefully I don't see any plastisizer inside the Swiftech 240 radiator. Of course I now need to find the 6 screws from the fans that dropped into the case, I recovered 2 out of the 8 screws.
