Not until SP1 !!!

There will be no SP1, as already stated many times in this thread already.

Correct.

But I would still wait. Until some of the unanticipated 'bugs' are resolved.

Yep.
My plan is to wait 2-3 months & see how things pan out.

... how things pan out.

Hopefully for Microsoft's sake, hopefully not...

But then again... The current Windows have recently seen an awful lot of patch-ups :-(

As I volunteer to teach IT at the local 60+ club my laptop will be upgraded first thing on the 29th, followed by one of my older non crunching desktops with a GT240 in.

So when I go to the 60+ club on the Friday I will know what to expect if anyone has upgraded their machines. The reason to upgrade my laptop, so I can take it with me to show people what it looks like, and how easy/difficult it is to use.

Still I expect to have my main machine and my only other Win 7 cruncher upgraded within a few days.

I have everything I value backed up in two places so why wait!

Live on the cutting edge I say :-)

After reading this thread and I've been following from its beginning I personally ain't in NO hurry to update any of my machines from windows 7 . The O/S works fine for me and don't have any problems with it . Im sure when its released there's going to be another thread here along the lines of " Windows 10 did this or that to my computer" .
The way I see it its a personal choice if you upgrade or not and I ain't one that's got to be 1st with a "new gadget" I'm sure when Windows 10 is released they will of tried to remove any ~"bugs" that have been found in testing but there's going to be some or some loophole that hasn't been 4t of and some "geek / nerd" will find it hopefully not exploit it but who knows . just the way things are nowadays !!!

If you are a registered Insider and run the current build 10130 with your MS-account, you should get the final version for free even without running W7 or 8.1. At least that's what many german tech sites claim since yesterday. Could be interresting for ppl that still run XP.

Micorosft orginally posted "users would receive the Windows 10 final release build and remain activated.". Then they promptly removed the "and remain activated" portion & added a disclaimer that only Windows 7 or 8.1 license owners would get Windows 10 for free when it arrives on July 29th

I'm firmly in the "Wait and let the first adopters cull the worst of the problems" camp.

I am a Linux user but since having bought a HP PC last year with Windows 8, soon updated to 8.1, I find Windows 8.1 very reliable. I am running 4 BOINC projects on it, two of them use VirtualBox. So when Windows 10 arrives I don't think I shall have any problem.

I do not see ANY advantage to change to win 10 from the crunching perspective.
If anything, it is going to cause problems. If you like that-go for it.

Looks like Microsoft provided some much-needed clarification:

"Peter Bright @ ArsTechnica" wrote:
On Friday, Microsoft appeared to describe a way to get Windows 10 at no cost that would apply to everyone. While the company has been clear that Windows 7 and 8 users would be able to upgrade to Windows 10 at no cost for one year after Windows 10's July 29 release, the Friday blog post seemed to create a way that everyone else could get an activated, genuine copy of the software for free, too.

Over the weekend, the company backed away from this idea, altering the wording of its post to remove the semblance of an official path to free Windows 10. Today, the company has made a third update that spells out the situation more clearly than it has done in the past.

First, it says that Windows 10, both the final release and the preview releases, should only be used on "Genuine Windows devices." Installed it into a virtual machine to test? It's probably not properly licensed. Stuck it on an old Windows Vista machine you had lying around? We don't know. Probably not licensed, because Windows Vista isn't eligible for the free Windows 10 upgrade license offer. Will anyone notice or care? No.

It looks like those running Windows in a virtual machine like Tullio won't be eligible for the free upgrade.

Why would Microsoft provide a crunching-specific advantage? You may as well ask if Windows 10 will improve the gas mileage on your car, then decline to upgrade if it doesn't.

Good point.

I imagine some older programs wont work on win 10 anymore like it is on win 8.1.
So i`ll mabe update my win 8.1 install but certainly not win 7.

http://blogs.windows.com/bloggingwindows/2015/06/19/upcoming-changes-to-windows-10-insider-preview-builds/

The crux of it is this:

Do you want to continue as a Windows Insider and keep getting preview builds after 7/29?
Or do you want to upgrade your Genuine Windows 7 or Windows 8.1 system that has been getting Windows 10 Insider Preview builds to the 7/29 release and stop being an Insider?
“I want to continue as a Windows Insider!” If you want to continue as a Windows Insider past 7/29 there is nothing you need to do. You’re already opted in and receiving builds in the Fast or Slow ring depending upon your selection. This is prerelease software and is activated with a prerelease key. Each individual build will expire after a time, but you’ll continue to receive new builds so by the time an older prerelease build expires you’ll have received a new one. Since we’re continuing the Windows Insider Program you’ll be able to continue receiving builds and those builds will continue to be activated under the terms of the Windows Insider Program. We provide ISOs for these builds for recovery from any significant problems, but they are still pre-release software. As part of the program we’ll upgrade Insiders to what is for all intents and purposes the same build as what other customers will get on 7/29, but that will be just another build for Insiders, and those who stay in the program will simply get the next build after as well.

“I want to opt out of the Windows Insider Program on 7/29.” If you decide to opt-out of the program and upgrade to the 7/29 build you will be subject to exactly the same terms and conditions that govern the offer* that was extended to all Genuine Windows 7 and 8.1 customers. This is not a path to attain a license for Windows XP or Windows Vista systems. If your system upgraded from a Genuine Windows 7 or Windows 8.1 license it will remain activated, but if not, you will be required to roll back to your previous OS version or acquire a new Windows 10 license. If you do not roll back or acquire a new license the build will eventually expire.

No update icon for me as I choose to only accept important updates which doesn't include that 1 and I really don't want it. ;-)

Cheers.

Still no icon for Win 10, when it started to show up on others PCs and still none, when I have 8 updates to do soon.

Greetings Zoom,

It will eventually show up. My other half's laptop took a couple weeks to acquire the icon. Just keep doing the updates and rebooting; it will show up. :)

Keep on BOINCing...! :)

Greetings Wiggo,

I usually always go by this statement: "If it's for free, it's for me!" When has Microsoft ever just given away their OS? I'm taking advantage of this 'once in a lifetime' opportunity. I will be doing it cautiously however. I will upgrade my laptop first, which is not used for "mission critical" operations. If all goes well with it, after say a month or 2, I will upgrade my main PC. No harm, no foul. :)

Keep on BOINCing...! :)
