My Windows 10 PC has the habit of rebooting all by itself, with no apparent reason (it has a 20 GB RAM). This brings havoc to my Virtual Machines running CERN orojects like vLHC@home, ATLAS@home and CMS-dev, plus the CERN Summer Challenge which now should become the CERN Fall Challenge in a few days. Other BOINC projects, not using Virtual Box, go on.

Greetings Tullio,

I only had Window$ 10 installed for 3 weeks so my knowledge of it is quite limited, but this sounds like the 'new feature' whereby we have no control of updates except for scheduling a reboot. Do you have updates set not to reboot automatically?

Keep on BOINCing...! :)

Yes, I asked to be notified when an update needs a reboot, and I suspend all BOINC projects. I had one this morning, it was a cumulative update. But the PC reboots randomly, even when there is no update. It is a recent HP Pavilion 500 152-ea. My SUN workstation, vintage 2008, never reboots except whn I have an electric blackout. It runs SuSE Linux 13.1. My other Linux box, a HP 635 laptop running 24/7 since 2012, has a battery and survives blackouts.

Greetings Tullio,

Sorry I couldn't be of more help. Your random reboots looks to me like just another reason, among many others, to ditch Window$ 10 and reinstall your previous version. Or, ditch Window$ completely and stick with Linux.

I have Linux Mint 17.2 installed as a dual boot OS on this PC. If and when I can figure out how to get many Window$ only programs to run in Wine, and other things of this nature, I will ditch Micro$oft and Window$ completely.

Keep on BOINCing...! :)

I found Windows 8 on the HP PC, soon updated to 8.1. I accepted the Windows 10 update just for curiosity. Since I am a SuSE Linux user, I am waiting for the next SuSE Linux release in Nuvember, called Leap 42.1. It should have some features of the SuSE commercial Version, SLES, which I had on the HP laptop when I bought it

Greetings Tullio and Siran.
But the PC reboots randomly, even when there is no update.

I have a custom built workstation that I've noticed does the same thing. Running Window$ 8.1. I installed Spybot Anti-beacon and have not seen a reboot since (2 weeks) which leads me to believe it was something to do with M$'s telemetry and data collection, Anti-beacon blocks the communication and the offending host sites.
If and when I can figure out how to get many Window$ only programs to run in Wine, and other things of this nature, I will ditch Micro$oft and Window$ completely.

I'm going the same route with Ubuntu and am presently working on Quicken under Wine with the same end goal.

I'm still using Windows 10 on my daily driver and I've not had my computer reboot itself ever. I've manually restarted it after software installs, but it has never rebooted on its own.

I have Win 10 on my other computer, I have locked it down as far as I can get it and it has not done any random restarts either.

New news from Microsoft in this. In an interview with PCM Magazine (Dutch), they say:
De automatische download van Windows 10-upgradebestanden op Windows 7 en 8.1 gebeurt mét gebruikerspermissie, stelt Microsoft. Windows Update gebruiken komt neer op instemmen.

Het bedrijf zegt verder dat de systeemupdate (die de upgradebestanden binnenhaalt) is verstrekt aan klanten die óf een reservering voor Windows 10 hebben gedaan óf die automatische updates in Windows Update hebben geactiveerd.

Or,
The automatic download of Windows 10 upgrade files on Windows 7 and 8.1 happens with permission of the user, says Microsoft. Using Windows Update is tantamount to agreeing.

The company says further that the system update (which downloads the upgrade files) was given to clients who had either made a Windows 10 reservation OR who have Automated Updates enabled in Windows Update.

Which means that if you do not want Windows 10, but you do have automated updates enabled (which is the default setting), you will get the Windows 10 update files downloaded to your PC despite your wishes. It doesn't matter in this which of the mentioned KB updates you have installed, just allowing Automated Updates will already do it.

"De gedownloade bestanden zijn simpelweg een systeemupdate die een klant in staat stellen om een soepelere installatie-ervaring te hebben, zouden zij besloten om in de toekomst te upgraden naar Windows 10."

"The downloaded files are simply a system update which enable a client to have a simpler upgrade experience, when they would decide to upgrade to Windows 10 in the future."
Uhuh.

Some old known updates got re-released, and there's some new ones to avoid.

So.. let's update my color-coded list, shall we?

(Red for 8.1, Blue for 7, Green for either/both):

KB 2952664 - Labeled a compatibility upgrade for upgrading Windows 7, its purpose is to "make improvements to the current operating system in order to ease the upgrade experience to the latest version of Windows".
KB 2957026 - This update makes feature changes and improvements to the Windows 8.1 Upgrade notification in Windows 8 or Windows RT. After you install this update, the upgrade will be more discoverable and faster.
KB 2976978 - A compatibility update for Windows 8.1 and Windows 8 which "performs diagnostics on the Windows system [..] to determine whether compatibility issues may be encountered when the latest Windows operating system is installed.
KB 2977759 - This update performs diagnostics on the Windows systems that participate in the Windows Customer Experience Improvement Program. These diagnostics help determine whether compatibility issues may be encountered when the latest Windows operating system is installed. This update will help Microsoft and its partners ensure compatibility for customers who want to install the latest Windows operating system.
KB 2990214 - Does the same as KB 3044374 but on Windows 7.
KB 3021917 - Does the same as KB 2976978 but on Windows 7.

KB 3035583 - This update installs the "Get Windows 10" notification on Windows 7 SP1 and Windows 8.1
KB 3044374 - This update for Windows 8.1 enables systems to upgrade from the current operating system to a later version of Windows.
KB 3065987 - This article describes an update that contains some improvements to Windows Update Client in Windows 7 Service Pack 1 (note: some google results suggest this may be part of the win 10 nagware upgrade, but it hasn't been confirmed)
KB 3068708 - This update introduces the Diagnostics and Telemetry tracking service to existing devices.
KB 3075249 - This update adds telemetry points to the User Account Control (UAC) feature to collect information on elevations that come from low integrity levels.

KB 3083710 - New Update Client for Windows 7. No further details about it.
KB 3083711 - New Update Client for Windows 8.1. No further details about it.
