We have one Win 10 system. The rest are Win 7. May your PCs live in "Interesting Times"? (Sorry, couldn't resist! :-P ) IT is what we suffer from who we choose to suffer?... ... Windows 10 can carry on slurping even when you're sure you yelled STOP! From that article, the magic names to invoke are: As for turning the thing off, Microsoft confirmed that, yes, you have to go to two places to actually stop your Activity History being shared with Redmond: 1. Under Settings->Privacy->Activity history: ensure the setting "Let Windows sync my activities from this PC to the cloud" is not checked 2. Under Settings->Privacy->Diagnostics & feedback: ensure Diagnostic data is set to Basic Phew! Is that clear? Can you imagine that stops Microsoft sucking up your private and personal data? Or worse? What can you believe?! IT is what we make it... Martin See new freedom: Mageia Linux Take a look for yourself: Linux Format The Future is what We all make IT (GPLv3) |

All I want is the use of my mouse back, is that too much to ask for? W10 updates keep breaking it and this last couple of times I have not been able to recover. |

https://lifehacker.com/windows-10-collects-activity-data-even-when-tracking-is-1831054394 has a blocking workaround for the problem, while the rest waits for Microsoft to fix it (whenever). |

Can you imagine that stops Microsoft sucking up your private and personal data? Or worse? As Clyde, I only have one device afflicted with the 'Curse of 10', a Surface I purchased from a batch advertised as running 8.1, and through that 'Limited' experience with 10........"What can I believe?".......from a company who has the audacity to invade my home at night, start a device and use it in turn and the network connection I pay for, to broadcast data to other devices?..........I believe nothing. Sooner or later(hopefully the former) they're gonna piss off enough people or governments to have a hammer brought down that will make the IE ruling look like Sesame Street. Karma will out..... ![]() "Sour Grapes make a bitter Whine." <(0)> |

Would you believe IT... It's December of 2018 and, to hell with it, just patch your stuff Windows, Office, Acrobat, SAP... you know the deal... ... combining to patch more than 140 CVE-listed security flaws between them... ... The December patch bundle from Microsoft addresses a total of 39 vulnerabilities, including one that is publicly known and another that is being targeted in the wild... Oh to be oh so vulnerable! Isn't that something that teenagers quickly grow out of?... IT is whatever it is?... Can you imagine?! IT really is what we allow it to be... Further thoughts for an unbelievable few months for this thread to round off this year... How can any company survive such ongoing tripe? How can the users not be revolting/revolted? IT really is what we make it... Martin See new freedom: Mageia Linux Take a look for yourself: Linux Format The Future is what We all make IT (GPLv3) |

How can the users not be revolting? There's no immediate alternative that's as good and has universal driver/hardware/software support as Windows. OS X requires new hardware that you pay through the nose for. And then you have to buy all your games/software again and hope they can run on this platform. Linux has too many distributions, not all of whom support all hardware and software that Windows supports. Android isn't mature enough yet on bigger devices. Chrome OS and other low volume OSes aren't supporting all games/software, mostly due to their low volume. So best sit with your hands in your hair, frothing at the mouth, yelling from the top of your lungs at Microsoft and then just sag, droop your shoulders and sit through it again. You know there's no alternative! Edit: and then, perhaps big gaming PCs are a thing of the past anyway. Especially with Shadow around the corner. (If you order Shadow's service, you get a small 7 Watt Linux client at your home which streams the games from their independent servers, which each contain: 16 CPU cores, 48GB of RAM and 4 performance grade GPUs, typically GTX 1080s or Quadro P5000s, running Redhat's KVM on Linux, with your client getting one dedicated GPU) |

That's the same problem I have with 'cloud' storage, and why I built my own cloud, on my home network, two(so far)NAS with 16 TB capacity(so far). I keep only the OS on the 250 MB SSD C: of each PC, with data being in 'my cloud'. Each PC also has a 3 or 4 TB D: where games and programs are located. If I lose my internet connection I can still wast enormous amounts of time gaming..... ![]() "Sour Grapes make a bitter Whine." <(0)> |

Oh, didn't I copy that? You get a Gigabit connection to their servers with the subscription....That would be a good reason to subscribe if they would provide me such a connection, even without playing, since I am stuck at 4/.3 Mbit/s DL/UL! ;-) |

So best sit with your hands in your hair, frothing at the mouth, yelling from the top of your lungs at Microsoft and then just sag, droop your shoulders and sit through it again. You know there's no alternative! Truer words have not been spoken. No one wants to support Linus because there isn't one Linux, there are hundreds all just different enough that a team of distro tuners is needed for each. On top of it the users expect high performance software that requires constant patches for legal, HR and accounting rules changes to be free - just like the O/S, of course it has to talk seamlessly to the windows world as all the customers and suppliers are windows based and they have to convince every hardware vendor to write free drivers for every piece of equipment going back a decade. Sure you can find a good free word processor for Linux. I defy anyone to find a program that can calculate payroll tax deductions for Linux that is up to date and kept that way. (Uh, don't businesses have employees? - Bingo, that's why Linux is going to only be IOT software.) |
