Yes, for me, everything changed with the Fall Creators Update. On the previous build, Windows would respect my settings to delay updates. It was the same for the FCU edition as well- Metered connection would stop Windows from Updating. But there has been an update in the last month or so that ignores Metered connection settings, not only for the FCU but previous builds as well. It still honours the delays for feature updates etc. It's just the Metered connection settings are now ignored for updates. Grant Darwin NT |

14 Vista, 9 Win8/8.1 and 19 Win10 machines have now been converted here to Linux Mint for others (and that doesn't count 3 of my own that also run Linux Mint) which is pretty good for a small country village and its surrounds. Cheers. |

Yes, for me, everything changed with the Fall Creators Update. On the previous build, Windows would respect my settings to delay updates. Greetings Grant and everyone, I am running on 1803 the SCU edition. Up to and including this month, I have had to manually have Windows download and install the updates and the virus definitions. Windows does nothing, so far, without my interaction. We'll see if this holds true for August and the future as well. I will report, after update Tuesday, whether Windows is still obeying my "commands" or has decided to ignore what I set it to do/not do. ;) Have a great day! :) Siran CAPT Siran d'Vel'nahr - L L & P _\\// Winders 11 OS? Hi all...hope my question fits here, if not, admins please feel free to move it to a more suitable forum/thread. I have been a Windows user since 3.xx and used all the versions up to Win 7. For my planned new computer build, I am seriously considering ditching Windows. I have no experience whatsoever regarding this, so would like opinions on what to go for. What I've found so far is Linux Mint, Zorin OS and Lubuntu. What would be the "easiest" option to manage for a die-hard Win-user ? Humans may rule the world...but bacteria run it... |

One of the "neat" things I have noticed about Win10 is that the task manager now includes a section that reports on your Gpu. Sorta like GPU-Z but with different details on what it looks at. A proud member of the OFA (Old Farts Association). |

One more 'lovely' development from the eager minds of Microsoft. Hi Keith, I was going to mention that somewhere here, when Windows 10 was coming out, someone said we'll end up with a "pay as you go" service OS from Micro$oft. But Tut said it first. :) All I have to say to this is: Micro$oft, my PC is MY PC. Keep you grubby meat hooks off of it!!! I will go to Linux before I give one more red cent to Micro$oft. I just hope I can get World of Warcraft and Star Trek Online to run on Linux. Tried before and ran into too many problems. Perhaps Wine has evolved enough over these past few years. (fingers crossed) ;) Have a great day! :) Siran CAPT Siran d'Vel'nahr - L L & P _\\// Winders 11 OS? "What a piece of junk!" - L. SaaS - Software as a Service (or as I called it, Software as a Subscription). One more 'lovely' development from the eager minds of Microsoft. Example: £10 per month x12x10=£1200 Taking XP Pro as an example: Initial RRP £135/12/10=£1.125 per month :-) M$ isn't stupid. |

Hi Sirius. I vaguely remember the comment of the "pay as you go" product back in the antiquity of Windows 10 first release. Then pretty much nothing about it since the mechanics of installing Windows 10 occupied the print services. That editorial link I posted was the latest reminder of M$ ultimate plans. I always knew M$ wanted to monetize Windows better. Wasn't aware of what they were going to call the product. I said goodbye to Windows last week when it blew up on me for the last time. Switched my last remaining Windows 10 machine over to Linux. Won't ever install another M$ product if/when and until they come up with something more appealing than the Windows ecosystem. I don't need Windows when there are more better substitutes and choices. Seti@Home classic workunits:20,676 CPU time:74,226 hours ![]() ![]() A proud member of the OFA (Old Farts Association) |

I knew that the moment GWX B/S started, so shutdown my Win 7 Ultimate rig. It has all the software that this rig has, so when all my win 7 rigs die or support ends for Win 7, the network will switch to Linux. The Ultimate will remain as a standalone (no network/Internet access). I like Office Pro as well as other software I use & too used to them. Quite like Mint :-) |

Hi Sirius. I vaguely remember the comment of the "pay as you go" product back in the antiquity of Windows 10 first release. Then pretty much nothing about it since the mechanics of installing Windows 10 occupied the print services. If they raise the monthly "rent" cost very high it would cause a lot of people who can't afford it to bail. On the other hand, when you have a LOT of people using a product even $2-3/mo is going to generate a hugh cashflow. Microsoft would need to prorate the currency so that it was the equivalent % of income of countries where the "average" income was the US equivalent of $1-2/day. If they didn't, they would price themselves right out of the 3rd world market. You can turn down and in some cases off some of the intrusiveness of Windows 10. In some ways the Microsoft OSAS (Operating System As a Service) almost resembles the Google Chromebook OS. Except Microsoft wants an income stream and Google gets their income stream from the targeted advertising (yet another intrusive activity). So right now, at least, its still a small capital "yea" for me. Tom A proud member of the OFA (Old Farts Association). |

I dumped my Window$ phone for a Galaxy S7 about 2 weeks ago due to M$ abandoning it's customers and no longer supporting the device. The same as they're doing to Window$ PC users. My only questions is WHY DID IT TAKE ME SO LONG? After getting used to the Android OS I'm really pleased with the features and ease of use. Although the privacy issue with Google is a problem it's no more so than the boys and girls in Redding have made it. Besides Google already had most of that information already. So I've cut another tie to the bloodsuckers and with every stroke I move one step further away. If they ever release an expanded Android OS for PC's and Tablets M$ is going to have some serious competition. ![]() "Sour Grapes make a bitter Whine." <(0)> |

I have installed the Windows 1809 upgrade on my HP Desktop with AMD A10-6700. It is working fine. The GTX 1050 Ti which used to overheat on GPUGRID tasks now seems to be working nominally. I don't know if this is only a coincidence. I haven't changed anything. No overclocking. Tullio |

Probably because you no longer have OpenCL drivers installed. So yes, working nominally because it isn't crunching. Certainly not anymore here at Seti. The task you run at GPUGrid is CUDA. |

Remember that after M$ sends updates, you may need to check that it hasn't replaced your NVidia drivers with the ones that lack OpenCL support. To be safest, only use drivers you have downloaded direct from the NVidia site, and you may wish to tell Win10 not to let M$ update manufacturer drivers. Regards, Jim ![]() ![]() |

OK, I have downloaded via Geforce the latest nVidia driver and both temperature and fan speed are lower on a GPUGRID task. Wait and see. I have run both SETI@home and Einstein@home GPU tasks on that PC and they all worked. What gives problems is the SETI@home screensaver. Tullio |

What gives problems is the SETI@home screensaver. I can't remember the last time I ran a screen saver, let alone the Seti one. How to Find and Set Screen Savers on Windows 10. Grant Darwin NT |

We can no longer stop Micro$oft from replacing our drivers. :( They screwed me with one a few weeks ago and I found out when trying to run World of Warcraft. Had to clean reinstall NVIDIA, less the experience crap software. Siran CAPT Siran d'Vel'nahr - L L & P _\\// Winders 11 OS? "What a piece of junk!" - L. Micro$oft removed the setting to stop driver updates in build 15019. We can no longer stop Micro$oft from replacing our drivers. :( I have Win10- Pro and I am still able to stop drivers from updating using the Group Policy Editor. Apparently you can do likewise with the Home edition using the Registry Editor. Grant Darwin NT |
