Still getting crashes with FF 60.0.1 and NVidia 397.64.

Be worth disabling browser hardware acceleration till it's sorted.

Luckily I've got WIn10 Pro. I just used the Group Policy Editor to disable any driver updates by Windows Update.

Firefox locking up and BoincTasks crashing. Supposedly fixed by newer NVidia drivers, but that's not my experience. Still getting crashes with FF 60.0.1 and NVidia 397.64.
FF has been totally unusable on my Surface Tablet since the 1st update this year. Forced me into Edge which I DESPISE!

If you're a believer in Biblical prophecy it would appear M$ is the foretold 'Mark of the Beast'. The opening screen on Win10 should simply be text "Abandon All Hope, Ye Who Enter Here".........

HOLY CRAP!!!

You would think that Micro$oft would make sure that their junk would run on their junk. Oh wait! They want the WORLD to run EDGE on the Internet. Yeah, disable any browser BUT Edge and force it down everyone's throats. Edge popped up on me when MY PC was upgraded to v1803 even though my DEFAULT browser is Firefox.

I watched (read and watched) the suit against Micro$oft back in the 90's. Gate's really tried to skirt the issue when he was asked questions at his deposition. Internet Exploder was so tied to the Operating System that it would make Windows no longer usable if one tried to get rid of IE. It looks to me like they are trying that same stunt with Edge. "Use our browser or you cannot use Windows." I believe, from what I have read that it's the same with Cortana.

Have a great day! :)

It isn't just 10 ... last update on 7, M$ decided ports that had been opened to use a major financial program were closed. God Damn PITA to get them open again.

Uh, I think it is a little too late for some people to get this warning....
Installing the Windows 10 April 2018 Update could wipe your entire desktop
User forums have been flooded with calls for help after recently updated PCs are rendered useless.
... With the help of Durham-based repair shop Computer Cellar, The Register traced the problem back to Avast Antivirus and a specific line of code contributing to the problem.

Another 1804 issue reported, though very rare, is that the update may erroneously assign a hard drive letter to the hidden 450mb Win partition, causing it to mess up drive assignments and report a low disk space error on that partition.
Solution is to remove the assignment of a drive letter to that partition, either via command line or from windows.
Haven't seen this; just saw mention of it on Tom's Hardware.

I ran across this problem, it showed as a virtual drive which would increase over time, and if I remember correctly I was able to delete it but I can't exactly remember how. I do remember that I had to go to the web to find the answer, and I think it had something to do with the registry. The only other problem that I had was with 3.0 USB. Until then, the 3.0 USB ports were backward compatible and I had an 2.0 external Blu-Ray drive using a 3.0 port, which became unusable after the update as the system would not recognize it. I did find a 3.0 external enclosure ( NextStar DX) that uses an existing internal Blu-Ray/DVD drive and outputs it via the 3.0/3.1 USB with the same performance as if it was still an internal drive.

Greetings Cliff,

Early on they postponed the release of 1803 because a problem was discovered and needed fixin'.

Perhaps the "fix" wasn't as thorough as M$ thought and is still causing problems. When mine was "upgraded" I noticed a few glitches in minor things afterwards. I no longer remember what they were.

My only thought on a fix would be to get the ISO and use Rufus to create a bootable flash drive and do a clean install. Kinda sucks, I know. Been there done that. :( But then, what if something in your system is incompatible and Window$ 10 does not spot it and still bricks the PC. Hmmm...

Can you get into... Crap, I can't remember what it is called. Dang memory! :( It's the bootup that allows a rollback to a previous working boot, something point. Dang, can't remember that either. :( Hopefully when this is read, someone with better memory can figure out what I was trying to say. Dang, I'm surprised I can still remember my name, Jane... Wait, that's not it. Is it George? Fred? Barney? ... ;)

Anyway Cliff, I hope you can get your PC straightened out and back up.

Siran

I'm somewhat back in business. The main problem now is that whatever I try I can't get the Intel Ethernet drivers to install properly, but I'm still trying.

I finally got hit hit by the FCU Windows 10 update. Found out I no longer had the ability to do a System Restore Point nor Backup since those functions were now disabled and greyed out.

Finally got around to starting BOINC after cleaning up after the update thinking that the update hadn't done anything to the Nvidia drivers since they were the same as before the update.

Nope. Instant missing coprocessor messages in the Event Log as I madly scrambled for the Exit function in the Manager. So, thank you M$ for making me think you hadn't touched my drivers but in fact had done so.

Reinstalled the 397.63 drivers and got back my OpenCL support.

Message 1944219 - Posted: 14 Jul 2018, 10:53:14 UTC

Greetings,

As much as I've learned to 'like' Windows 10, something HAS to be done about Micro$oft and their belief that THEY control all PCs in the world.

As much as I used to dislike Windows 10, I cannot envision the governments of the world switching over to Windows 10. It would not be in their best interest to hand over control of their thousands of PCs to Micro$oft.

As much as I've learned to 'like' Windows 10, why the hell would Micro$oft add a setting so as NOT to accept driver or other third party software if they're going to ignore the setting anyway? And why does the monthly update reset some settings? Micro$oft thinks they own OUR PCs!!!

Last month we went over our allotment of bandwidth from our ISP. The ISP decided to waive the additional 50GB bandwidth block fee because it was our first time going over. I have been watching bandwidth usage and I cannot figure out why Micro$oft Sticky Notes HAS TO ACCESS THE INTERNET. WTF!?!? I have Cortana disabled and it is wasting bandwidth. I looked into it and it's actually the Windows search function, but it's labeled "Cortana". I seldom if ever use the Windows search function. Why the hell is Cortana wasting my bandwidth?

Currently my acceptance of Windows 10 has stagnated. I have Windows 10 on this new PC for 2 reasons. 1.) Micro$oft demanded the chip manufacturers to NOT support any Micro$oft OS but Windows 10. It is a pain in the behind to try to install Win 7 on an 8th gen PC. 2.) Win 7 support ends in what? 6 months? So it's going the way of XP. Funny thing. I saw the OS that the V.A. Hospital is using, a few weeks ago, and it is NOT Windows 10. It actually looks like they're still using XP. I saw Win XP type screen savers running.

Ok, rant over. Gotta take a nap. ;)

Have a great day! :)

With 20/20 hindsight, I would have just not given the Windows 10 experiment the chance in the first place. But I was curious what it was all about compared to my Windows 7 computers. So it ended up on my first Ryzen experiment. When the time came for my next Ryzen build, I said No Thank You and went with Linux. The Windows 7 computers got upgraded to Ryzen+ and Linux also recently. Only the Windows10 computer remains on the Windows platform in my farm. I only keep it running because of not getting around to trying to make BoincTasks work with Wine on a Linux platform. That and wanting to keep a SIV installation around for debugging help for Ray.

Making Windows the same as Android & iOS.

At least with Win10 Pro I can disable driver updates & disable Cortana with the Group Policy Editor, and delay by several months OS updates.

Guess what? Who in their right mind sits and reads the WHOLE EULA when installing software? Do you? I doubt it. I don't. If one has other software (not from Micro$oft) that will only run on a Windows PC, what's a person to do? It's a fraking catch 22. The EULA is written by lawyers and in lawyer parlance. We have NO CHOICE but to accept the EULA so that we can run our software on a Windows PC. I'm no speed reader, it would take me an hour or more to read the EULA. And not understand about 75% of it to boot.

Micro$oft is a mega corporation and cannot be stopped. The government tried to end what they were doing when Gates was still the CEO. Didn't work then and will not work now or in the future.

Sorry my friend but I just cannot agree with what Micro$oft is doing. Just because I click "Agree" to accepting the EULA to install Windows in no way says I agree with it. I have no choice but to accept it or else not run the software I use that runs on Windows only, and quit using a computer altogether. As I said, catch 22.

Have a great day, Jord! :)

I read the EULA when it was first available for Windows 10 and just based on that decided that none of my systems will ever get Windows 10 installed willingly. Not even if it's the last and only OS in the world.

Not reading the EULA ever? You must've missed that South Park episode.
So what it takes you an hour to read it all? What if there's a line in there that says you'll be giving your kidneys to Microsoft, unless you state definitively that you won't? Or that your house, car and mistress are after you click OK from them?

Always read the EULA. And otherwise, don't complain. You willingly said it was OK for them to misuse your computer in any way they see fit, while you had the chance to go for a Mac (with another proprietary OS) or Linux (and then install Windows 7 via KVM). And as has been pointed out plenty of times in this thread, Windows 7 runs fine on Coffee Lake and Kaby Lake, the only thing that won't install is the Intel GPU because those drivers are for Win10 only. You may need to do some handwork to get drivers unpacked, but essentially it'll work.
