New Windows 10 Changes Revealed

The next Windows 10 update will make shutting down or restarting a computer a smoother process. It will also make it slightly easier to switch back and forth between a phone and a computer.

The changes are in the latest test build of the Windows 10 "Fall Creator's Update." That's the next twice-yearly update to Windows 10 that adds new features rather than simply fixing security and performance bugs.

Normally in Windows, if you restart the computer (or it's automatically restarted by an update), you need to re-enter your login details. The same thing happens if you shut down the computer and then boot it up later.

Greetings,

Yet another reason to stay away from Winblows 10. More reduction in security. Bah!

After the Creators Update my Windows 10 Home edition PC is able to crunch only SETI@home and SETI Beta tasks, both on CPU and GPU ( a GTX 1050 Ti). All else fails. Bu I have two older Linux boxes. One runs the SixTrack tasks of LHC@home, the other the Einstein@home tasks, both CPU and GPU on a GTX 750 Ti. Its driver has been updated by OpenSuSE and is now 384.59.

Hi Grant,

The option I have selected is to stick with Win7 Pro 64bit. If this PC dies before I do, I will build another one and Win7 will be my OS of choice, only because I have stuff that only runs best ON Windows. Too complicated to get running on Linux. ;)

My only issues have been stopping Win10 from updating video drivers.

Hi Grant,

Yeah, it seems a lot of people have that problem. Microsoft just wants everything THEIR WAY, and screw what the consumer wants. ;)

They're (Microsoft) is trying to lay claim to ALL devices running Winblows 10.

My room mate was getting BSOD after BSOD and I figured it was related to that creators upgrade thingy. Good thing I read this forum a lot. :) I just rolled it back to an earlier Win 10 and no more BSODs.

I have 2 brand new Windows 7 Pro install discs I purchased a couple years ago that I'm saving for the next 2 machines I build when I get some extra cash. After that I hope enough people will be unhappy with M$ and switch to Linux based OS spurring releases of commonly used productivity software (ie Quicken/Quickbooks).

I currently have a HP Laptop that I converted to Ubuntu and I'm slowly learning(re-learning as I've had prior limited Unix command line experience). Just trying to teach a real old dog new tricks.

I'd be careful on your builds. M$ has reneged on their promise that newer CPUs will be allowed to support Win 7. When I built my i7/7700K that my wife got me for Father's Day, I attempted to do a clean install Win 7 Ultimate (x64) on a different physical drive and it was rejected. Somewhere in the very beginning of the process something on the chip told Windows that it was not supported and it aborted after I clicked "OK". I then successfully started Windows using the original system drive. Because the free upgrade of Win 10 Pro (x64) determined that the system was a new machine (CPU, mobo, mem sticks) I had to reactive the OS. Ran into problems again, as the reactivation was not accepted, even with numerous calls to M$ to resolve the problem. I ended up buying an install USB stick ($199 + tax USD), M$ doesn't use install disks any more, except for system builder versions, and was able to install and active my Win 10 Pro (x64). so be very careful that your new builds are at least below Kaby Lake.

Hi Cliff,

I remembered this when I read your post here. There is a way to circumvent the block Micro$oft put in place to block Win 7 and 8.1 on Kaby Lake and Ryzen.

I hope that this is not a moot point. ;)

Have a great day! :)

But I think that only works if you already have Win 7 installed on your machine.

Lucky you, maybe at this point in time it's only affecting Intel processors.

So long your motherboard comes with win 7 drivers it should work on Intels too.
I found a few instructions during my web search.
You need to create a boot USB stick of the win 7 install disc with USB 3 drivers included.
I used universal USB installer.

I buy barebones boxes from a company in Cincinnati with everything except SSD and Hard drives pre-installed as I've discovered it's actually less expensive and saves time and annoyance. As I generally stick to older CPU(Gen 6 Intel) and Motherboard Chipsets (Z99 is what I'm considering) rather than bleeding edge technology I think the install will go ok.

If not my journey deep into Linux will commence sooner than anticipated.

New examples of what your Windows 10 Creators Update sends back, depending on if you selected the Basic or Full telemetry:
From https://privacy.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-10-feedback-diagnostics-and-privacy:

At Basic we collect only data necessary to keep Windows devices up-to-date and secure. Basic data includes information about the device itself, the proper function of Windows and Store updates, and basic error data. We collect the following data at the Basic level:

  • Device, connectivity, and configuration data:
    • Data about the device such as the processor type, OEM manufacturer, type of battery and capacity, number and type of cameras, firmware and memory attributes.
    • Network capabilities and connection data such as the device’s IP address, mobile network (including IMEI and mobile operator) and whether the device is connected to a free or paid network.
    • Data about the operating system and its configuration such as the OS version and build number; region and language settings; diagnostics level; and whether the device is part of the Windows Insider program.
    • Data about connected peripherals such as model, manufacturer, driver and compatibility information.
    • Data about the applications installed on the device such as application name, version, and publisher.
  • Whether a device is ready for an update and whether there are factors that may impede the ability to receive updates, such as low battery, limited disk space, or connectivity through a paid network.
  • Whether updates complete successfully or fail.
  • Data about the reliability of the diagnostics collection system itself.
  • Basic error reporting, which is health data about the operating system and applications running on your device. For example, basic error reporting tells us if an application, such as Microsoft Paint or a third-party game, hangs or crashes.

Full data includes everything collected with Basic data, plus additional information that enables Microsoft to fix and improve products and services for all users. We collect the following additional information at the Full Level:

  • Additional data about the device, connectivity, and configuration beyond that collected at Basic.
  • Status and logging information about the health of the operating system and other system components (in addition to data about the update and diagnostics systems collected at Basic).
  • App usage, such as which programs are launched on a device, how long they run, and how quickly they respond to input.
  • Browser usage, including browsing history and search terms.
  • Small samples of inking and typing input, which is processed to remove identifiers, sequencing information, and other data (such as names, email addresses and numeric values) which could be used to reconstruct the original content or associate the input to the user. This data is never used for Tailored experiences as described below.
  • Enhanced error reporting, including the memory state of the device when a system or app crash occurs (which may unintentionally contain parts of a file you were using when the problem occurred). Crash data is never used for Tailored experiences as described below.

According to Microsoft 71% of the computers is set to send back full data. You're all crazy.
