Just replaced my dead Iconia tablet with a M$ Surface PRO 3. It was supposed to be loaded with Win 8.1 but arrived with 10...............Grrrrrrrrr. Well I'll just have to be careful with what info is on it. I've been using a WinPhone for a year so they've already got the basics of my life. "Sour Grapes make a bitter Whine." <(0)> |

I thought I had driver updates disabled through O&O Shutup. On my E8500 cpu computer I got an Update status:
Ok I set BOINC to not restart when my computer reboots so I can put the correct driver back in place and not lose OpenCL work again. The GT 240 has not been in this computer since November. It currently has a GTX 550ti. |

M$ creates unknown depths in the cesspool of unethical behavior, disdain and contempt towards users of its products. Except of course that if you actually read the article, and some very pointed comments in response to it, it becomes clear that this is a deceptive headline that has nothing new, and little relationship to the actual article or the facts .... Looks to me like at about 4:59 pm on deadline day, Farrell needed a quick article about why Linux is great and Windows sucks and, voila, recycled something that's been around since 2005. Sheesh! |

I read through the article and still do NOT trust M$......... From ZDNet > Windows 10 telemetry secrets: Where, when, and why Microsoft collects your data How does Windows 10 telemetry really work? It's not a state secret. I've gone through the documentation and sorted out the where, when, and why. If you're concerned about private documents accidentally leaving your network, you might want to turn the telemetry setting down. |

Anyone have their Windows 10 computer update their video drivers without your supervision? This is on a system where driver updates are forbidden. I just discovered my Windows 10 system seems to have updated the Nvidia drivers from 372.54 to 376.53 all on its own on February 8. I thought this was supposed to incur disaster with BOINC because Microsoft doesn't ship OpenCL enabled drivers. This is not what apparently happened on my system. It has been crunching without errors all this time. OpenCL drivers are installed by Microsoft on that date. Has Microsoft changed their Nvidia driver updates to include OpenCL now. I have been following this thread loosely and everything so far has indicated if you let Microsoft automatically install new video drivers, either AMD or Nvidia, you will lose your OpenCL implementations. Comments. Seti@Home classic workunits:20,676 CPU time:74,226 hours A proud member of the OFA (Old Farts Association) |

Comments. Yep, M$ pushed 376.53 to all 5 of my boxes, 4xWin10 and 1xWin7. However, the 376.53 versions pushed did have OpenCL and there was no problem, unlike the first time a few months ago when they pushed a version that lacked any OpenCL. When I opened a ticket with NVidia on that issue they told me it was an error, and that OpenCL should be included. So I have to assume that was a one-off error. On one machine, I rolled back to a previous version while troubleshooting an issue, and M$ re-upgraded it the next day. Guess I no longer have any control on either Win 7 or Win10. Annoying. |

Thanks for the reply Jimbocous. Explains why things didn't go kaboom! How did M$ force the update on the Win 7 box though? Did you have automatic updates on in that box? I see the Nvidia 376.53 update in my Optional Updates list now. I have my Win 7 boxes set to inform me about Updates but let me decide what to do. My Win 7 boxes are still on the manually installed driver I put in myself. I see that the old KB2952664 has made a re-appearance also. Says it doesn't have the old GWX or Upgrade Capability in it anymore though. Looks like it installs the telemetry for the Windows CEIP system again. Its going back to Hide status again. I'm pretty sure it's been mentioned in this thread, but you should give O&O ShutUp10 a try. I use it on both Windows Pro and Home, and it can be configures to stop automatic driver updates, among other things. https://www.oo-software.com/en/shutup10 |

One small "sop" to the very disruptive problem of having the Windows 10 unexpectedly randomly slam the window closed on you: Windows 10 to offer update 'snoozes' Microsoft will enable Windows 10 users to choose when security updates are installed once they arrive rather than enforcing them straightaway. Users have complained that the reboots required for some updates, which cannot currently be deferred, are disruptive. ... ... said John Cable, a director of program management at Microsoft. "What we heard back most explicitly was that you want more control over when Windows 10 installs updates," he wrote. "We also heard that unexpected reboots are disruptive if they happen at the wrong time."... Don't you just love the positive spin on that?! Try explaining that to a presenter when the Windows 10 laptop goes into sulk mode right in the middle of a presentation in front of a theatre of a 100 or so people... Add a mad scramble for a second laptop and to reload the presentation and get back to the right slide and so on... Whilst the first laptop is waiting for a WiFi connection with the happy message about "update in progress, do not switch off"... Quite a fantastic advertisement! How do people put up with such silliness?... Rule one should always be: NEVER blindly terminate a live user session... After a record 16 days without a reboot on my Windows 10 PC, after an unwanted reboot I found I have an Amazon assistant on my desktop to assist me in buying items. It is true that I get Amazon ads in the mail on my Linux box but I simply cancel them. Tullio |

https://betanews.com/2017/03/12/disgustingly-sneaky-windows-10-ads/ Don't believe what Microsoft tells you -- Windows 10 is not an operating system. Oh, sure, it has many features that make it look like an operating system, but in reality it is nothing more than a vehicle for advertisements. Since the launch of Windows 10, there have been numerous complaints about ads in various forms. They appear in the Start menu, in the taskbar, in the Action Center, in Explorer, in the Ink Workspace, on the Lock Screen, in the Share tool, in the Windows Store and even in File Explorer. Microsoft has lost its grip on what is acceptable, and even goes as far as pretending that these ads serve users more than the company -- "these are suggestions", "this is a promoted app", "we thought you'd like to know that Edge uses less battery than Chrome", "playable ads let you try out apps without installing". But if we're honest, the company is doing nothing more than abusing its position, using Windows 10 to promote its own tools and services, or those with which it has marketing arrangements. Does Microsoft think we're stupid? |

Maybe after a year or two being frustrated with the ads, they do this: Sign up for an Ad Free Win 10, only £50 a year :-) |

Anyone already running 15055 Windows 10 pre-release from the Insider Edition? I was wondering what to expect when it drops later this month. Any unexploded bombshells in there for the general PC user? Seti@Home classic workunits:20,676 CPU time:74,226 hours A proud member of the OFA (Old Farts Association) |
