My only complaint is setting up network shares/drives... it's (still) terribly overcomplicated. You can create "shares" easily through Cinnamon (uses underlying Samba and creates SMB shares) that then nothing else either Windows or *ux can connect to. I've tried making Samba accounts, setting volume permissions and it just doesn't want to work. A few years ago, I was transferring a lot of data back and forth between my main machine (was XP-32 at first, then I moved up to 7-64) and my laptop was running OpenSuse 11.1. I tried SMB shares and it was unreliable at best, and even with gigabit, couldn't get more than about 40mbit and the CPU overhead was nearly 100%. I dug around and found a third-party NFS server for Windows and got the shares configured that way, and mounted them on the Linux machine. wsize=32768 and rsize=32768, 9K jumboframes on both ends, I was getting 980mbit of throughput with just 6% CPU overhead. AND the Windows networking service was no longer crashing frequently. Linux is pretty good at a lot of things, but SMB is not one of those things. You'll have better luck using NFS in Windows using third-party tools. Also, linux is very picky about WLAN drivers. Realtek and Intel-based chips tend to be the most-supported, Broadcom is close behind. One wrinkle in that is that USB-connected seems to be very hit-and-miss as well. If you're planning to move to Linux... do some research on the specific model of WLAN card/device you have and see if it will work. Sometimes you have to use NDISwrapper (uses Windows drivers in Linux), and that can only be done manually with a terminal (command prompt). Anyway, yeah. You're welcome, all of you, for the list of updates to avoid. As I said, I use WSUS here, and every update has to be approved before it becomes available for the machines to use, so I've got a bit of a safety net to research these things. Others won't be so lucky. I imagine it won't be very long before we'll just have to turn updates off entirely. Linux laptop: record uptime: 1511d 20h 19m (ended due to the power brick giving-up) |

Well, as most of you have gathered from my recent Thread about Hackintosh; I've made my move away from Win OSes to MAC OS X. Just got the last of a few bugs sorted, and now Snow Leopard boots from the hard drive. I will be working with Snow Leopard for awhile; and might upgrade to El Capitan - maybe... Though, I still plan on upgrading my Win 7 Pro x64 to Win 10 Pro before July. I've prepared by cloning my Win 7 drive so that I won't have to worry about the 28 day reverting issues. If at any point I decide I don't like Win 10 Pro; out comes the Win 10 Pro drive, and in goes the Win 7 Pro clone drive. ...And, MAC OS X will continue residing on its dedicated hard drive. :-) TL P.S. Looking forward to getting working MAC OS X drivers installed for the GTX-750 TI SC; maybe when I get that done, I can take Snow Leopard to SETI Beta to get more MAC Units processed and evaluated. MAC GPU support seems to be dragging here. Perhaps it hasn't been a priority, or maybe there's MAC OS issues that Eric and crew need to iron out before bringing MAC GPU support to Main. Now that I have a running MAC OS, I'd like to help out in that regard to hopefully see MAC OS X GPU support here at SETI Main. :-) TL TimeLord04 Have TARDIS, will travel... Come along K-9! @Ulrich Metzner & Mr. Kevvy: Same as Mr. Kevvy: 17.3 Rosa Cinnamon Edition for about 3 weeks now. There were a couple of updates coming in, nearly on a daily basis. 10 Minutes after system start it starts looking for updates and repeats this every 2 hours. This behavior is configurable via GUI. I have still not decided, which distro to use, so i'm open to alternatives, although LinuxMint was the smoothest experience of all so far. Aloha, Uli |

@Cosmic_Ocean: Yup I ran into the RTL issue with Mint's default drivers... they last about 15 mins. then need a reboot. Not good for the 2GB apt-get of CUDA! I tried NFS, but I couldn't get it working either. One of my favourite sites for easy walkthroughs (HowToGeek) came up in my Google results for Samba, so I tried this article and finally the shares appeared and they work perfectly. I finally ran a backup and it was at least as fast as doing so over a Windows share before. Also ran into my 64GB USB flash drive not mounting. This was solved easily by installing exfat-fuse and exfat-utils; didn't need a reboot and it then mounted and could read/write. |

A NEW twist? When booting my daily driver this morning, after a couple of minutes a blue band covered my screen with the admonition that "Windows Update needs your help. We haven't been able to check for updates in 30 days." That's right! You haven't! (And guess what, you ain't gonna!!) Advice needed..... A close GF in the U.K. sent me the following. I told her about SETI, and this group. Can anyone suggest HOW she might proceed to resolve her Win 10 problems? I will forward any response to her. "Once again I have had no end of problems with Windows 10, I even re-formatted my HD and installed Windows 8.1 but yet again, it was automatically upgraded to Win 10 hopefully this time (3rd time lucky!!!) it will be ok - so far so good. The pain-in-the-arse is having to re-install all my software and printer/scanner again." Thank you! River Song (aka Linda Latte on planet Earth) "Happy I-Phone girl on the GO GO GO" |

Advice needed..... Greetings Linda, I'm not running that malware known as Window$ 10 ;), but I did check it out last year and had many problems reverting back to Win7. The first thing I would have her do, if she has to reinstall 8 again, is put a stop to Window$ updates. I'm not saying turn them off, just turn off automatic updates. That will stop Window$ 10 from taking over the machine. Do you have a list of the KB's that should be blocked? If so have her do the updates manually and uncheck the KB's on the list. There's also a batch file running around here that can be run to make sure some do not slip by "unnoticed". I have an updated one if you want it. That should be a start. If she wants Window$ 10, however, I haven't a clue about what to do with any problems there. Sorry. :( Keep on BOINCing...! :) CAPT Siran d'Vel'nahr - L L & P _\\// Winders 11 OS? Thank you, and THANK YOU, CAPT Siran d'Vel'nahr !!! I forwarded your post to her in the U.K. I have done what you suggested to my Win 7 PC some time back. However, I didn't mention that to her as I didn't know if she was a "casual PC User" like many are, or not. But, since she mentioned she has the wherewithal to re-install Win 8.1 she is a lot more knowledgeable than I realized. Good for her! :) THANK YOU again..... Advice needed..... One thing that wasn't clear in the quote/problem is: does she want 10 in the first place, or would she prefer to stay on 8.1? If she wants to stay on 8.1: Solution: When going back to 8.1, set Windows Update to "check for updates, but let me choose what to download and install" rather than leaving it on the default of fully automatic. This will allow you to search through the available updates for these updates to avoid and to right-click > Hide Update for all the red and green ones. That will keep it from getting 10 again, and also keep 8.1 from getting the nagware about getting 10. Note: I know trying to find these KB numbers in a list of updates that is well over 200 long can seem daunting, but every single one of these updates starts with a title of "Update for.." rather than "Security Update for..". That narrows the search area down considerably. Also note that some are going to be 'important' updates, and some are going to be 'optional' updates, so there's two categories to search through. Staying on 10: Getting older printers to work in 10 is roulette. Google the model number and "windows 10" to see if there are solutions to get it to work. For the most part, getting the drivers via Windows Update has the best chance of basic functionality (printing, without fancy features like duplexing, etc), but if it is a multi-function printer, you likely won't be able to do the scanning part without the manufacturer's software suite, and that all depends on if the manufacturer has made a version of their software that works in 10. Greetings, Gotta question about Window$ 10 for those running it anyway. Is anyone having a problem with an update that came out on Wednesday March 2? Here's why I ask: A friend of mine is running 10 and he has been having nothing but problems since Wednesday. Just now, while we were in voice chat, his PC rebooted out of the blue. He has Window$ update schedule a reboot instead of just rebooting when it wants to. Any help would be greatly appreciated! :) Keep on BOINCing...! :) CAPT Siran d'Vel'nahr - L L & P _\\// Winders 11 OS? "What a piece of junk!" - L. Is anyone having a problem with an update that came out on Wednesday March 2? Here's why I ask: I had wanted to post something about this a couple of days ago but forgot to... thanks for the reminder. :^) It's probably update KB3140743 which has been implicated in causing many problems including BSODs, inability to boot even into Safe Mode, extreme slowdowns, etc. Hope this helps, and would advise to disable automatic updates. |

Is anyone having a problem with an update that came out on Wednesday March 2? Here's why I ask: Greetings Mr. Kevvy, Thank you for the response. I'll go to where you linked to and have a read. Can a single update be uninstalled in Window$ 10? If so I'll have him do that. I thought the only "choice" one has when it comes to Window$ 10 updates was to schedule a reboot. I didn't know that Window$ 10 had anything other than automatic updates. I only ran with Window$ 10 last year for about 3 weeks before I got really disgusted with it and "rolled back" to Win7. Once again, thanks for the response. I'll head to that link now. :) Keep on BOINCing...! :) CAPT Siran d'Vel'nahr - L L & P _\\// Winders 11 OS? "What a piece of junk!" - L. I yesterday installed a brand new Win 7 pro SP 1 in a VirtualBox and the first thing it does is "selfupdating" itself with KB3102810 and a bunch of unknown others and then starts "spinning" in the endless update loop with 100% use of one core and immense volumes of memory. It is doing this since hours and the only way to stop it, is to disable updates completely. I think, finally M$ manages to ruin new Win 7 installs and it's only a question of time, until they start to ruin already running older Win 7 systems... Aloha, Uli |

I thought the only "choice" one has when it comes to Window$ 10 updates was to schedule a reboot. I didn't know that Window$ 10 had anything other than automatic updates. Correct... this is a workaround to prevent them by telling Windows that one's connection is metered so that it won't download them until you specify otherwise. |

The world needs to put a stop to Micro$oft commandeering all PCs around the world. How, I haven't a clue, except teach the world to run Linux instead of Window$. The major companies of the world need to stop catering to Micro$oft just because they are scared of the BIG hairy gorilla in Redmond, Washington. We need to teach Micro$oft that we WANT CHOICE!
