Or [business and government] just won't bother with Microsoft and [will] go Linux or other op's.

Not going to happen. Not now, not ever. The training curve makes such a thing impossible.

I believe Microsoft are doing a lot of Damage to there reputation because of what they are doing and are under estimating how this is going to go.

If you read that link a bit earlier in the thread and noticed where MS gets their revenue, you would have to conclude that their "public" reputation is meaningless. As long as they keep the IT buyers happy, the rest of us can pound sand and it doesn't cost MS a penny.

The thing about those numbers like the number of how many computers have win ten is they are misleading .

I like to know out of the 200 million they claim to have using it how many are new computers and how many are not !!

2 billion machines out there . And there all older machines how do they make money , or the manufacturers make money .

Consumers aren't going to replace them if there's problems running win 10 and Corp.'s aren't about to risk there info I bet or cash as info is cash these days.

Sorry, but that just isn't the way it works in the real world.
More like:
1) the CFO tells the CIO that tax regulations make it advantageous to lease IT assets rather than buying them directly. This is because the lease costs can be written off as operating expenses in real time, where purchasing equipment makes it a capital asset that must be amortized off over time at a reduced rate. Since this is in accordance with standard accounting practices, I highly doubt this is unique to the US, but rather occurs with minor variations world-wide.
2) the CIO tells his buyer to go lease the desktop and server assets, often on a three year lease. As a result, the equipment churns on a three year cycle, with 1/3 changed out either by asset type or geographic location on a yearly basis. The CIO also like this because he spends less time and money having his desktop people keeping aging hardware and software running beyond its lifespan. Been there, done that, no fun. Trust me.
3) the equipment the buyer gets is going to be a result of a standard template required by the buyer, what the leasing company is willing to propose to meet that standard, and what the lessor can buy in the marketplace to win the bid.

Bottom line, when Win 10 is what's available, Win 10 gets bought.
When corporate licenses on Win 10 are cheaper than licenses for Win7/8/8.1, Win 10 gets bought.
When nobody's offering leases on anything but Win 10, Win 10 get bought.

No emotion, no angst, no policy discussion, just business as usual.

Government and academia may vary a little, but I bet not much.

Up until now you may of leased the equipment but you still had control of content on the equipment .

The first company that loses there secrets will sue . Are you going to keep sensitive plans of things your working on in a system if you know that the system your using you have no control off ?

Right century, wrong year. I think you are referring to this.

... the problem with turning some of the "telemetry" almost-completely off (which can only be done in Enterprise), is that it is combined with the same service that handles Updates, Defender, and Malicious Software Removal Tool. That's why it is "very strongly recommended" to not turn all the datalogging off, is because in order to turn it off, you have to turn most of the system's defenses off, which leaves you very vulnerable.

That's according to M$, and is completely unnecessary for the proper functioning of an OS.

You just have to decide which evil you'd rather deal with: exploits and actual malicious activities from.. predominantly southeast Asia, or MS storing everything in "the cloud" to keep tabs on your every move, with everything attached to your machine's unique marketing ID number? Personally... I'll take my chances with the former

And when you shop for an automobile, which one do you choose:
a) the one with no windshield, or
b) the one with no brakes
there are >2 choices

I ran 7 years on 2K and XP without AV software and used IE in all of that time and was fine

There is a word for that. You ought to play PowerBall - often.

...specifically what data is gathered and where it is stored and what is done with it is--for the most part--educated speculation even at this point, because MS's only answer to all the journalists' questions over the past 8 months has been "we have no comment at this time." So.. without positive or negative confirmation backed by supporting facts... it's all speculation

Wait, what??? M$ has a longer rap sheet than every perp in "Law & Order"'s 25+ year run combined.

In short, "A leopard doesn't change its spots".

Case in point:

...searching for a local file on the local machine does a Bing search (presumably to search through the filesystem indexes that are stored in the cloud), when basically every version of Windows before 10 would.. you know.. just search the filesystem indexes that are located on the HDDs that are actually installed.

Why?
Because neither today's HDDs nor SSDs have the capacity or speed to maintain said index. Precisely how does this 'improve the user experience?"

I understand complacency - people don't like change. Yet, I would rather be safe than sorry. I tried Linux 15 years ago. Installation was less than fun. I thought Win2k was to be the final Redmond OS for me. Now, Win7 WILL have that honor.

Bear in mind that such discourse is unheard of with regard to the multitude of Linux distros, the BSDs, and others. <-- these cars have windshields AND brakes (aka choice).

Seriously? MS can access the Cloud more quickly than it can access my SSD? I think not.

I don't use the cloud either, except for very specific files, just like using Box...you can turn that off also.

But I'm sure you know that already...

Anyhow, I don't keep tinfoil in the house, so no hat for me....

More seriously, from what I see of the Windows 10 push and 'features', this is all looking ever more like Windows is ever more being abused to now be a "portal" to entrap users and their world into the "Cloud World" according to Microsoft.

Any usefulness or convenience for the user to use Windows is just an aside to the primary goal of sucking you into the Microsoft Marketing... You are now the 'Microsoft Product' to be 'Marketed' with.

All just my personal observation.

But then, I still do not understand how or why people put up with the pain and distraction of intrusive advertising...

Alas poor Martin. He does not understand the road he set the world upon when he right clicked. Your right click has forced the creator to change from selling you a physical copy into renting you access. Now the creator has joined the landlords. You protest with copyleft, you are met with a rent bill. Oh, the power of the right click.

I have to agree I am liking the taste of mint very much(and giving the time frame I think that the flavor will get even better)Once the current run of beta is over(and I am done with my computer upgrades that are in progress)I will be devoting more time to Mint since I feel that this will be my OS for the future.
