I see KB3035583 is back in the optional list. Revision 7.0, one has to wonder what changed this time.

I did just see that a little while ago on my laptop.

Maybe possibly that's a correction to the "now or later tonight" options of late? Maybe it's to make a "no" option other than the red X in the corner. *shrug*

Message 1750116 - Posted: 18 Dec 2015, 14:55:47 UTC

Greetings,

This may seem a bit coincidental but... here goes. This has only happened since I let Window$ 10 install and subsequently reverted back to Win7 Pro 64bit.

At least 3 times now this PC has spontaneously done the BSoD (Blue Screen of Death). It has not done this while I'm doing something, only when the PC is sitting doing BOINC. After the blue screen disappears and the PC goes through the POST, it displays a message that a "New CPU has been installed..." and that I have to enter setup to configure it. This had not happened before Window$ 10, only after reverting back from Window$ 10 and doing 2 subsequent clean installs of Win7.

I did some research on the "New CPU..." message and have come across something about ASUS motherboards and the CPU socket. If memory serves I believe this had something to do with AMD CPUs. I use Intel solely. My PC spec are in my profile.

Has anyone else experienced this or come across this?

Any ideas would be appreciated. :)

Keep on BOINCing...! :)

the BSoD

You post as if there's only one BSOD in Windows, while there are tens if not hundreds of possible BSOD combinations. So you really will need to post what it says, if you want help on it. Windows Event Viewer will log system crashes and what they said, if you can't remember what it said on the blue screen of death.

Why they both say "rebooted..." when several seconds apart is beyond me. The PC only did one reboot. I admit, the above is all GREEK to me. I've no clue what any of that gibberish means. I'm not a computer scientist. ;)

If anything else is needed, let me know. I'm finding, on the Internet, different reasons for this: water cooler heat sink warping the CPU, thermal paste, bad RAM, low voltage to CPU, bla bla... ;)

Keep on BOINCing...! :)

You may want to check if you have the hotfix installed spoken about in this thread, before your system stops responding as well.

The primary causes of this error are virus/malware, drivers, memory, and disk corruption. And there can even be combinations of those so a thorough check of all is required. Added possible causes are hardware errors such as damaged motherboard or other hardware.

BCCode: 7A 0x0000007A

Also, this thread, in case you run that system with an SSD.

Greetings Jord,

From the Hotfix request page:

A hotfix is intended to correct a specific problem.
Apply the hotfix only to systems that are experiencing the specific problem.
Installing the incorrect hotfix can cause damage to your system.
If you are not sure whether the hotfix is the correct one for your system, do not install it.
Hotfixes are included in subsequent service packs that are safer to install through Microsoft Update.

Since I have SP1 installed, would it be safe to assume that the hot fix is also installed on the PC? I do not have a SSD, I have 2 500gb WD SATA drives.

Keep on BOINCing...! :)

Windows 7 Service Pack 1 was released in 2011, the hotfix pointed to was last revised in 2012, so you best install it anyway. Also, make note that this stop error can be attributed to malware, drivers, memory, and disk corruption, so you have a search ahead of you.

I'm updating the list. I just did a clean 8.1 install on a laptop today and found a bunch of the 8.1 version of a lot of the ones I only knew about for 7. So.. time to add them to the list.

"updates to avoid list", version 5:

C_O, in comparing your latest list to my prior saved .bat removal file, KB3097877 is on my list but not yours.

Is that update OK?

That one is not related to the 10 upgrade, but when it was released, it was one to avoid until MS fixed it, as it was causing things like Outlook to crash. Not sure if it has been fixed yet though. I know I declined it in WSUS a few weeks ago, but if a new release of it gets released, it will show up as a new update again.

I'm working on a clean install of 8.1 on a laptop as well and found an "optional" update that should probably be on the "updates to avoid" list:

KB3058168 Update: Activate Win 10 from Win 8 or 8.1...

Also, I came across a "recommended" update:

KB3080149 Update for customer experience and diagnostic telemetry

"This service provides benefits from the latest version of Windows to systems that have not yet upgraded." I don't think I want this one on my systems either.

Is it just me or is Win10 slower than Win7? On my GTX970 it takes around 5 mins longer doing APs on W10 than on W7, I've installed the latest Nvidia drivers.

Other than this I'm very happy with Win 10 :)

Hi folks,

I am experiencing some problems when running 2 AP's on my GTX-750 (1 Gb):

12/19/2015 10:21:35 AM | SETI@home | task postponed 30.000000 sec:

From other messages I understood that this is probably related to not having enough GPU memory available. I changed my AP settings from:

-unroll 12 -ffa_block 8192 -ffa_block_fetch 4096 -hp -use_sleep

to

-unroll 8 -ffa_block 8192 -ffa_block_fetch 4096 -hp -use_sleep

but I still see the same message. I never had these problems in the past (and have been running multiple APs for at least a year), but I recently upgraded from Windows 7 to Windows 10, forcing me to update the NVidia driver to 359.06.
Watching GPU-Z while running 2 APs showed that there are spikes in memory usage (from 600 Mb to 950 Mb).

Has anyone else noticed increased GPU memory usage with Windows 10 and/or driver 359.06 ?

I posted this on the AP thread, but someone suggested I post it here as well.

Not really Tom. I have 750TI but so far have found no difference with this driver. I am at present running similar systems on both W7 and W10 and both seem to be doing well. My video cards do have 2G.
If you want to you can manually select an older driver from NVIDIA and not use the latest one presented by them.

Yes, but, IF he's on Win 10 Home; then Win 10 will force the driver to upgraded with the latest generic Windows Driver. This will crash all other running WUs.

If running Win 10 Home; I would first Upgrade to Win 10 Pro to prevent the forced driver upgrade from happening.

I can not find any difference between the Home and Pro versions for the option to download or not download drivers anymore(I am running one of each). I believe this was changed recently.
(Of course if one is running the Insider OS, then you have signed up for it and allowed MS to download a new OS whenever it wants to and that is how the new versions are downloaded, so for me I get the MS drivers whenever the OS is re-loaded...but now with just a simple security update) Don't sign up for the Insider version if you do not want these downloads.

Good point; and, no, I'm NOT on the Insider track. I took my dad's newer Win 8 ASUS Laptop, Upgraded to 8.1, then 10 Home, then 10 Pro. Next, took new HP Envy Desktop system on 10 Home, and Upgraded to 10 Pro.

10 Pro does allow Deferment of Upgrades; but, yes, you're right, I too have NOT found a way in 10 to prevent Drivers from Updating - I misspoke in my last post... :-( Still, I prefer Pro to Home.

*sigh* I think you're right on the first one. I don't think it particularly applies to anyone unless you use the Key Management System (KMS), but better safe than sorry, I suppose. I must have missed that one. It's easier to find updates on a system that only shows new updates when they are released, but when you have ~225 updates show up because of a clean install.. I wasn't going to check every single one of them.

As far as 3080149, that's a green-coded update in the list; it applies to both 7 and 8.1.

edit: I just spent a few minutes searching around, and I don't think there is a 3058168 equivalent for 7. I could be wrong, but I can't find anything that suggests there might be.

Good evening to everyone some new M$ BS I was running updates yesterday and it was at least a half hour or more before ANY updates downloaded(7 always has been a little slow when doing updates) but this is crazy I did not have any win 10 updates selected so is this how things are going to be if you refuse to give in to M$ and their BU*^$%@#. Just another reason to show M$ the door. I have a cable internet connection and just 2 days ago I did a graphics driver update from nvidia(350+MB downloaded in less than 30 sec.) So I see this as another way that M$ is trying to force us to give in to their demands.
