I, on the other hand, will most likely elect to *not* pay a recurring fee to keep using it personally. I have enough recurring bills as it is.
HERE HERE on the bills and since I have already decided that 7 will be my last windows it does not matter if M$ wants to charge or not Linux will be my OS after support for 7 runs out and Linux may well change a whole lot in the next 5 years given the current situation with windows.

New blog post about how updating to Windows 10 is going to become easier:

Our aspiration is for customers to choose Windows, and to love Windows. ...

Wow!...

Disengage brain. Simply follow the Microsoft approved way...?

There is nothing better?...

I'm sure there have been some books written about that...

How do we better educate those lost in their hasty rushed busy bewildering Marketing/Media steered world instead that unfettered freedom is easily available?

Still another update on my Windows 10 Home Edition. But now RDP seems to work. Maybe they read my complaints.

What we need here in an ongoing definitive list of win 10 KB's NOT to install, so we know the ones that we DO need.

Does this count?

It wasn't entirely all my doing.. I sifted through this whole thread and compiled most of that list from others' contributions and warnings, but now when new sketchy updates come out, I research them myself and add to the list.

Just can't resist :DDDD

(Millions flies can't be wrong)

MajorGeeks posted an "anti-spy tool" for Windows 10.

You have the option of disabling many Windows 10 features from within DoNotSpy10 including; Disable Telemetry, Disable enabling Lock Screen Camera, Disable and Reset Cortana, Disable Location, and many more.

Be advised that DoNotSpy10 is advertising supported and may offer to install third party programs that are not required for the program to run. These may include a toolbar, changing your homepage, default search engine or other third party programs. Please watch the installation carefully to opt out.

Here's another suspicious optional update just pooped on the radar. (Update for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB3102810)
https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3102810

And, no that is not a misspell.

Just looked at their description about it. Looks like another update to the Update Client. Nooooope. I'm not installing any updates to the Update Client. The newer Update Client is the one that shadow downloads stuff in the background without ever telling you. Not letting that happen.

Adding 3102810 to the color-coded list.

edit: fixing a machine that had all of these updates (and the user even mistakenly tried the upgrade and it failed at 99% after several hours), I removed the previous list of updates to avoid using the command-line 'wusa' method and told it to search for new updates and I've hidden everything that came up... and I've told it to check for new updates after doing that and I've found one or two more that are highly suspect that somehow slipped through the cracks. Namely.. KB 3050265. I'll keep hiding these things as they keep showing up again until it finally says it couldn't find anything.

edit2: And I went in to WSUS to see if I had let 3050265 slip through the cracks before, and saw there were two updates that needed approval. 3081954 is another one to add.

KB3083710 is an improvement on KB3065987
KB3083711 is an improvement on KB3065988

Although KB3065987/-88 installs the Windows 10 telemetry add-on Diagnostic Tracker service (DiagTrack) as well, this can be uninstalled by doing:
Run CMD as Administrator, then in the CMD window type:
sc stop DiagTrack
sc delete DiagTrack

Why not uninstall KB3065987 and be done with it? Because this update adds the group policy/registry injection that adds an option in Windows through with you can tell Windows never to upgrade to a newer version of itself. It will add this in Local Group Policy Editor, Administrative Templates, Windows Components, Windows Update, change the State on Turn off the upgrade to the latest version of Windows through Windows Update to Enabled.

Because the Group Policy Editor is only available on Windows Pro, Ultimate and Enterprise versions, people with the Home and Basic versions of Windows can add this option through the registry. In this case, run regedit.exe as administrator, then navigate to HKLM\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate, if this key isn't available, add it.
Then add a DWORD value DisableOSUpgrade = 1 into that key, and exit regedit.

KB3083710 and -11 are an improvement on adding the key to the group policy editor, so in essence these updates are good ones. If you do not want Windows 10, and you don't want to worry about all the updates through Windows Update, you can install these and set the 'turn off the upgrade' option to enabled and be done with it.

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3102810 tells you that it's a fix for Installing and searching for updates is slow and high CPU usage occurs in Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2. The file information shows it's only updates to the Windows Update executables and libraries themselves.

There is really no need to unnecessarily scare people about these things.

I had serious problems with Windows Update in W10 (I used O&O Shutup to disable automatic updates, but even when I turned the options back on in O&O I got errors when trying to check for updates), that's why I'm back at 8.1 now on my lappy.

Bye bye W10, it was nice, but I like to decide myself when and if I do any updates.

Greetings,

Gotta question about Window$ 10: The other half is using it and every time it boots up it pops up an error message stating: "Failed to initial environment" Yes, that is word for word. :| Any clues? Has anyone else seen this error? Is there a fix?

Keep on BOINCing...! :)

I have seen it, not lately, but I thought is said "initialize". I did nothing about it and it went away after a short time.
