Just checked Windows update and found the following -

KB2952664 & KB3075851 raised their ugly heads again, and a new one KB3083710 & KB3083711, which deals with telemetry in Win 7 & 8.1.

I don't buy computers, I build them!!

Yes, I've had to re-hide that one on a couple of machines so far. But I'm waiting for next Tuesday/Wednesday to see if we get a block of them all together. In the meantime, I've just scribbled 3083710 on the bottom of the Windows 7 list I keep beside each monitor.

I got 3035583 reissued as Optional/Recommended, despite that I already have it installed. It's the only patch of the GWX files that I'm allowing on my system, still no signs of the GWX icon or secret Windows 10 uploads to my system.

SO I guess I have to reinstall it. ;-)

So.. let's update my color-coded list, shall we?

(Red for 8.1, Blue for 7, Green for either/both):

I do have slight red/green color blindness, so I can't see differences on Your list.

I can see difference in Your code -explanation, but not in list when red/green is next to each other.

That's how slight is my color blindness is. And of course, my TFT is not so high quality, colors do change when I move my head.

So would it be possible to modify list, like red=standard / blue=bold / green=italics?

Greetings,

It would be great if Micro$oft would leave my hidden updates hidden. I keep having to re-hide them. It's clear to me that Micro$oft wants it ALL their way and not our way when it comes to OUR PCs.

I need to put more time into getting a few Window$ programs to run in Wine on Linux Mint. I need to get our network up to speed first, that will happen at the end of the month-ish. :)

I have Window$ Update turned completely off because I have found that when it runs it now sucks massive amounts of RAM and makes the PC run in a herky jerky fashion. Once it is done the used RAM goes back to normal and the PC settles down. I have updates up to but not including May this year installed. I don't trust Micro$oft and will not install any from May 2015 on.

Keep on BOINCing...! :)

They're just reissuing the patches with some new code in them, so it's then essentially a new file, with a new md5 hash if you want. So that's why it's again showing up in the list.

I must admit, I had some real problems when I first upgraded to Win 10. However, in hind sight, I was also pushing the limits of my hardware and playing with my video drivers at the same time. At this point everything is latest greatest, all power, buss ratios and memory settings are at stock levels and I am having absolutely no problems. My Surface 3 Tablet on the other hand...

My rig:

AMD FX-8350 at 4100~4300mhz
16gigs of G-Skill Ripjaws RAM at 1600mhz
2-Powercolor R9 280Xs 1030/1500mhz
Gigabyte GA970-UD3 MOBO
Samsung EVO 850 SSD
EVGA Supernova P2 1200W PSU

And another question? How much RAM are you people using? My Rig easily utilizes 5gigs of the 16 installed. It only slightly bogs down when I have need for the GPU for other tasks ie; Netflix, YouTube or Windows Media Player with G-Force visualizations running... Otherwise, no hiccups...

In the end, I really think this whole spying/performance issue thing has been overblown, especially in light of the smart phones many of us have been using for years. Get over it.

My daily driver has 32GB DDR3 2400MHz RAM. My average RAM use fluctuates between 5-8GB, but has several spikes depending on what application I'm using. With some of my games, it spikes up to 12GB (I also heavily multitask when gaming), and when I'm using Handbrake or 7Zip it can spike up to 20-24GB used.

It only slightly bogs down when I have need for the GPU for other tasks ie; Netflix, YouTube or Windows Media Player with G-Force visualizations running... Otherwise, no hiccups...

Yep. And for those occasions, I simply use a GPU exclusion as 90% of the time the lag is from too many things stressing the GPU at once. Though that doesn't work for Netflix since it runs in a browser, and if I put in a browser GPU exclusion, my GPU would never get used by BOINC. :-)

In the end, I really think this whole spying/performance issue thing has been overblown, especially in light of the smart phones many of us have been using for years. Get over it.

Speaking as a privacy advocate, I agree. Though I am glad there's watchdog groups keeping an eye on Microsoft's behavior to call out anything nasty, or at least to inform us of what is going on.

...

Keep on BOINCing...! :)

That reminds me of my convert-over period...

I had 6 years of dev projects on win 3.11 wfwg, far too many hours with MS C++ and a lot of careful interprocess working and then... WinXP still didn't have certain critical needed features that we'd been teased along to wait for...

Meanwhile, the graphical desktops for Linux had developed along nicely and... ALL our code recompiled on Linux with nothing more than adding some shim code to de-Microsoft some of the interfaces. The real beauty for some of my work was that the great care needed to make multiple tasks behave nicely was no longer needed. All the tasks ran and communicated very nicely with no extra special tweaking needed. For the sake of productivity, I was kicking myself for not converting sooner...

Which comes too...

Wine was very good and also very subversive...

That environment teased me to linger on with some Windows ways for way past their sell-by date...

Far easier, but much more of a jolt, is to take a day or a week to fully convert to whichever choice of new apps/ways.

I lingered on Wine for about 6 months until hitting a second "Why didn't I change sooner" moment!

(Then again, that was at the time that Wine ran s@h + setiqueue & setimon faster than Windows!)

All just my own humble personal observation/opinion...

Happy cool crunchin!

No need to be sorry. It's understandable when the world leaves someone behind they tend to have skewed views.

Greetings Jord,

So, are you saying that Micro$oft is 'improving' upon the old ones hoping that we will miss them and get them installed so that they can commandeer our Win7 and 8.1 PCs as they have done with the Window$ 10 PCs? Shame on them! ;) As I have stated earlier, I have no intentions of installing any updates from May 2015 onward. :) And I have Window$ Updates turned off so it will stop nagging me and stop creating havoc with 'MY' PC. :)

Keep on BOINCing...! :)

I don't get it. In the AVG threat thread you tell others they should not slag the OP of that thread off, but in this thread when betreger posts he has severe reservations against Windows 10 for reasons totally his own, you feel the need to ridicule him. Why?

Why must betreger get Windows 10 in your opinion?
Why must we all?
Is it all right, in your personal opinion, that Microsoft pushes Windows setup files onto people's machines without them having given consent to do so and tries to execute those at every reboot? Does that feel like a trusty organization?

The justification of Windows 10 fans that 'others do it' is getting stale.
But it appears you do like some kind of privacy, for why else do you name yourself Ozfan around here, and not post with your full name, address, telephone number, all email addresses, your birthday, your social security number, your bank numbers and underwear size. All information you apparently don't mind sharing with Microsoft.

Well yes, because in the end you will want Windows 10 as it will be the last Windows there will ever be. It will continue to be updated in the way the Windows 10 users have found out, so if there's ever going to be a Windows 10.2, they'll get it automatically. And probably it'll block then and they're told to pay 70 dollars to continue using their Windows. Ransomware.

But since others do it that way, it's all right.

Or they'll stop sending security updates to Windows 7 and 8.1; wouldn't be the first time.

Edit: I hear in the field that the "Update to Windows 10" update is showing up as an Optional update in people's Windows Update and that it can happen that you have to hide it three times before it yields.. for an hour, after which you get three 2GB updates offered!

I do have a cell phone, a 10 year old 'dumb flip phone', I don't use Facebook, I have only 'tweeted' 4 times, my communication of choice is verbal face to face.

In my opinion, people use 'smart' phones because they aren't......
