After reading through this thread, I think I'm going to set up my NetVista X with the PIII and 768MB of RAM. I LIKED Windows 2000 pretty well and I have all sorts of software (full versions of Office Professional and WordPerfect Office and a lot of image editing software and a full copy of Acrobat and...) Then I just won't get on the stupid internet with it. I still have a Pentium III with XP running. If you enter Finance into the Search field, https://apps.ubuntu.com/cat/search/?q=Finance&page=1, you get; Or, you can just create links to the individual institutions in a Toolbar folder in FireFox, most have online accounts. For BOINC it's Exactly like configuring Windows Vista. You use One Platform per Machine. All the nVidia cards in one Machine http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/top_hosts.php, All the AMD in another. The app_info.xml is Exactly the Same in Any Platform, the only difference is the Name of the entries. Building the app_info is the Same in Any Platform, just combine the different aistub files into one. You don't even have to track down a Hidden folder, just open the BOINC folder in your Home folder and go to Projects. |

For the users who've been swayed to use Windows 10: Here in the Netherlands there are reports that when you use a user account but have the Administrator account on the system as well, and you turned all the privacy stuff off in both accounts at Windows install... that you best check the Administrator account as apparently Microsoft is turning parts of the privacy settings for this account back on. Perhaps also on other less used accounts. One of the users ran O&OShutUp10 on all his accounts, and found that half of the privacy settings on his Administrator account have been turned back on. He mostly uses his user account on that system, for which the settings are all still turned off. |

Running my usual weekly manual Check for Updates this morning on my daily driver (Win Vista), I find the offer of an optional update, KB2999226. Its title is "Update for Universal C RunTime in Windows". On the surface, it seems like a perfectly reasonable update, intended to allow applications built by developers using the latest Windows 10 Software Development Kit (SDK) to run correctly on the earlier operating systems, like Vista/7/8/8.1 (but apparently not XP). No point in forcing third-party developers to use multiple SDKs to reach each OS. Makes sense to me. However, then my paranoid side starts wondering if this update might also make it that much easier for M$'s own black ops folks to port some of Win 10's less savory "features" back to those older operating systems through future innocuous-sounding updates. M$ wouldn't really need this update to do that, I suppose, but methinks it certainly would streamline their process! ;^) Any thoughts from the less (or more) paranoid among us? |

One major problem I have with a total switch to Linux is Quicken. I have used the program for 20(?) years for my finances and reading there is not a reliable way to run that program in Linux. Some have tried various emulators but with little success. Any Linux gurus out there have a workable suggestion? I know it isn't exactly native/ideal, but you could use VirtualBox and install XP in that in Linux to make an XP virtual machine (VM) just for Quicken. The good news is that XP doesn't need much disk space at all.. in the VM, you can set it to use a 4GB virtual hard disk and give it 256mb of RAM and it will be plenty happy with that. There is a Linux program called Gnucash, I would appreciate hearing from anyone with experience using it. PM would be OK as I don't want to 'wander' the thread off topic with my personal problem. I've been using it for the last 4 years, ever since I migrated to Windows from eComStation and the finance programs built for OS/2. I find it does pretty much anything I ever needed from Quicken, MoneyCounts and InCharge. I like that it has double-entry bookkeeping since that is how I learned to manage finances back in school. You can import your books from Quicken for an easy account setup. It does online banking and also does a pretty good job with business banking needs. I think it would make a very viable solution for personal finance banking in Linux. You should download the Windows version and check it out to see whether it would satisfy your needs in Linux. Yes, it's in the Ubuntu Software Center under Office, https://apps.ubuntu.com/cat/applications/gnucash/. Which means it installs in Ubuntu with One mouse Click. Looks interesting, I just installed it on the Bedroom machine in Ubuntu 14.04.3. I don't have time to configure it though, I'm contemplating moving a couple of CUDA cards to the other Ubuntu machine. I was going to wait until the Mac CUDA App appeared on BETA, but, it doesn't appear that's going to happen this week. It also appears the New Mac MB CPU Apps won't make it to main this week either... Oh well. |

I have an old HP XW8200 workstation that I'm going to install Ubuntu on and I'll put Gnucash on that to play with. Another question, anyone have any experience with video capture and playback in Ubuntu. I currently use a Hauppage card as a DVR for recording, Does Ubuntu support that card? Linux installs and runs fine on any machine made in the last ten years. I see no reason to raid the closet and worry about Product Keys. It comes with the basic LibreOffice apps preloaded, you can install the rest of LibreOffice from the software center, along with the Free image editor GIMP using One click, [OT] If you run an operating system without antivirus software in my opinion you are asking for trouble [/OT]

It comes with the basic LibreOffice apps preloaded, you can install the rest of LibreOffice from the software center, along with the Free image editor GIMP using One click, Hmmm, I've run Macs for 20 years, mostly OSX, without any AV or any infections. Linux is similar to OSX. Here are the reasons Ubuntu gives for using AV; https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Antivirus This article applies to all Ubuntu versions Why do I need anti-virus software? Isn't Linux virus-free? For the most part, Linux is engineered in a fashion that makes it hard for viruses to run (click here for more info). However, there are many reasons you might want a virus scanner on your Linux PC: 1) you are required to have a virus scanner installed by the terms of use of the company you work for or are doing business with 2) to scan a Windows drive in your PC 3) to scan a Windows-based network attached server or hard drive 4) to scan Windows machines over a network 5) to protect a Windows virtual machine from within the virtual machine 6) to scan files you are going to send to other people 7) to scan e-mail you are going to forward to other people 8) some Windows viruses can run with Wine. Linux virus infections are theoretically possible. Dang, it sounds as though the only reason you need an AV in Linux is to protect some Windows PC. I suppose if you swap data with a Windows PC you might need an AV in Ubuntu...or not. |

Thanks for that. Good answer and good giggle. I gave up with "anti-virus" as a bad idea when first losing a WinXP system to a "false positive"... Far too much lost time needlessly rescuing that one! Well over a decade later and still no anti-virus on any of my Linux systems and nary a concern. The need for "anti-virus" really does seem to be uniquely a Microsoft phenomenon. Usual note to appease the Windows evangelists: No OS is completely immune from social engineering hoodwinking/conning a user to do 'silly things'. However, the software repository system used for the main Linux distros does make that social engineering (implausibly?) far harder for malware to get loaded to run amok. (And Apple have things severely locked-down but that is another story.) In some ways, the greatest risk is from running Boinc! (And note that Boinc is very carefully and widely watched to prevent anything malicious...) I have an old HP XW8200 workstation that I'm going to install Ubuntu on and I'll put Gnucash on that to play with. I would suggest staying with kernel 3.13.x, you will have a better choice of GPU drivers to chose from. You might try the drivers in System Settings/Software & Updates/Additional Drivers first. You might be satisfied with those and not need to install a Driver from nVidia. Whatever you do, stay away from AMD driver 15.7, it has been nothing but trouble on my machines. Also, Ubuntu 14.04.x has a Bug with Dual GPU cards, so, if you use Multiple cards you may have to apply the 'Fix' mentioned here, https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ubuntu-drivers-common/+bug/1310489 Image 14.04.1 will install Kernel 3.13.x, Image 14.04.2 will install Kernel 3.16.x; http://old-releases.ubuntu.com/releases/14.04.1/ Look in the Software Center after installing, I think there is a Video capture App there. Have Fun. |

... video capture and playback in Ubuntu. I currently use a Hauppage card as a DVR for recording, ... Far easiest is to use the distro software centre to install/update your graphics drivers. Often, the graphics install is actually a careful interface to the manufacturer install, with whatever tweaks needed already done for you. But hey! This is Linux... So... If you want you also have the choice to go and do a manual install to make your own tweaks... :-) For your Hauppauge card (which one?), try these links as a first look: Running WinTV TV tuners and HD PVR 2 under Linux Hauppauge WinTV PVR-150 How-To Hauppauge HVR-2250 With Mythbuntu Setting up a Linux DVR w/ MythTV, Ubuntu 12.04, and a Hauppauge WinTV-HVR 1250 TV And there's various other examples. Good luck and have fun! Martin See new freedom: Mageia Linux Take a look for yourself: Linux Format The Future is what We all make IT (GPLv3) |

Back in ~91, the first internet transmirred ''viruses' we had detected at school, ' I was examining core dumps to analyse ( Wide format tractor feed paper running down a uni hallway, highlighter in hand) to see what was happening. These were more correctly Worms. I recall the traditional stealth/polymorphic vuses transmitted via disk and newsgroups were mostly Dos based et the time, but those were a different thing, though there were Amiga ones circulating too of course. For the worms, they were mostly applicable to nix based infrastructure (most of the routing etc was done by sparc stations etc), and propagated via exploits in protocols/ports, and sloppy admin practices. AFAIK, similar weaknesses still exist in infrastructure and admin practices, as do worms and the manual exploits they use to propagate. Intrusion detection systems and security practices bolt a lot of that down, but AFAIK the mechanisms just changed/moved into infrastructure hardware, and aren't called worms anynore, but NSA backdoors :) "Living by the wisdom of computer science doesn't sound so bad after all. I have been using Linux since 1996 and never had an AV. Earlier I had been using UNIX systems in my professional life. I am connected to Internet since 1991 on the GARR Italian scientific network. I have used Gopher command line server and client before Netscape and Mozilla existed. Now I am using also Windows 10. I found Windows 8, then 8.1, on a HP minitower I bought last year. I am using it mostly as a Virtual Box platform for CERN projects. My mail is on a SuSE Linux host. When the next SuSE release occurs, I shall install it as a Virtual Machine on the Windows host, which has plenty of RAM (20 GB) and disk (2 TB). Tullio |

...These were more correctly Worms. I recall the traditional stealth/polymorphic vuses transmitted via disk and newsgroups were mostly Dos based et the time, but those were a different thing, though there were Amiga ones circulating too of course. Yes, a very long time ago there was something called the 'Autostart Worm' infecting CDs. I was subscribed to a particular Mac Mag that shipped CDs with the Mag. Somehow the 'Worm' made it onto one of their CDs. Fortunately it was discovered and reported before my CD arrived. When the CD arrived I checked it and found it did indeed contain the 'Worm'. That was probably the closest I've come to having My Mac infected...that I know about. In other news I've managed to log back into my damaged Test Ubuntu 15.04 SSD. This is a New problem with AMD driver 15.7, well, New to Me anyway; https://bugs.launchpad.net/hwe-next/+bug/1479913 Bug #1479913 reported by drizzle on 2015-07-30 So, you have to wait for Ubuntu 15.10 for the fix???? Stay away from AMD Catalyst 15.7. I was locked out of Logging In until I removed the AMD card and installed a nVidia card. Then my Password worked...too weird. Hmmmm, after further reading, Don't forget that the fix here does nothing for people that installed FGLRX directly from the AMD website... Nods Head Repeatedly while looking at my Re-Released 6970 with March 2014 firmware... So, it's just Ubuntu 15.04 and AMD drivers? Stay away from Both???? |

Off-topic, but in response to TBar. Yes, I ran into that one as well. That's why I've stayed with kernel 3.19.0-25 for now. I didn't need to pull out any cards though - just go to recovery mode and revert the kernel then reinstall fglrx. Still a pain, though. Soli Deo Gloria |

Off-topic, but in response to TBar. OK, but if you're angry with Win 10, like a number of people in this thread, try the latest version of Ubuntu, and hit this Bug, you might decide to stick with Win 10. So, best to tell people to Avoid Ubuntu 15.04 with AMD drivers. If you are new, you end up with a totally Borked system and can't even log in to make it to the Bug page to discover the 'Fix'. Not Good. |
