Would that help?

Matt Lebofsky's technical news item Progress Report (Mar 25 2015) indicates more servers won't really help:

1. More servers. Seems like an obvious solution, but there is some resistance to just throwing money and CPUs at the project. For starters, we are actually out of IP addresses to use at the colo (we were given a /27 subnet) and it's a big bureaucratic project to get more addresses. So we can't just throw a system in the rack at this point. There are workarounds in the meantime, however. Also, more servers equals more management. And we've been bitten by "solutions" in the past to improve uptime and redundancy that actually ended up reducing both. In short we need a clear plan before just getting any older servers, and an update to our server "wish list" is admittedly way overdue.

I seems to have problems receiving new work units of seti@home.
The message 'communication postponed' appears at the right of the work information.

Is there a problem?

Hi Gust

It's not you,
there is still a work unit shortage by the looks of it,
as i have 3 m/c out of workunits.

I've not had any GPU work units for well over a week.
If at first you don't succeed,
Then skydiving is not for you.

It's not to use MORE than to user MORE POWERFULL Server.

Sure you could throw a bigger computer in, but will that bigger computer hammer the Db so hard that it will cause even more problems? Db load has seemed to be one of the major issues at hand.

They have Muarae, and I'm sure it is doing way more than just web pages, maybe doing science with it? IDK but I'm sure it is doing something that is not listed. Maybe it's the database rebuilder, but who knows?

From what I understand, they don't have a computational problem that requires more MIPS thrown at it. They need to work through their database problems, which simply requires time and patience. Faster storage seems to be their primary request at the moment.

I can't speak for the project, so I'll leave it to them to decide if they want to take you up on your offer. Since the project relies on donations from individuals, government grants, and corporations, I can't imagine they have the money or the means to buy a server off you though.

I think the AP database is working just fine, it's just whatever they split gets gobbled up so fast, then they have to wait for people to process the MB tasks before they load new files.

There is an entire Quesitons and Answers section for those seeking help. You should post there. Number Crunching is also a good place to seek help.

I am having problem with work units starting and then after days it is still at the same time and percentage done. When I look at the graphics it shows choosing optimal functions. This has been going on about a month now. Some work and some do not past a certain point. After about a week of this going on I normally just abort it and get new work units. I would rather have a fix than abort the work units.

I, too, am having problems with having to abort WUs. I look in at my computers running Seti@home and if the elapsed time is more than 3 or 4 times the estimated time for completion, I'll abort it. It didn't used to happen much but it's becoming more common now. The computer in question is a Windows 7, fully updated and I'm running BOINC 7.4.36 with Seti 7 7.00 processing the WUs.

The WUs I have generally have estimates of 1:46:26 or 4:54:50. But after 18 hours I think I might as well give up.

Would this post be more appropriate in Number Crunching?

Thank you.
