As I haven't studied Viking history.I wonder how accurate the time line is for the show? I Reackon it's quiet accurate . The History Channel is involved some how I think I've seen in the credits and there reputation would be on the line if they where not reasonably accurate . I guess we'll see if there show is myth or real . Pity there's only 10 episode this season

Well Where did the FIRST tsar of Russia came from? And England:) The ties with the Vikings and the Nordic countries remained a long time, even if you married into the Slavic lineages and spoke their language, Ruthenian. The usual prince named Vladimir / Volodymyr corresponds Nordic Valdemar, in use at both locations during the early Middle Ages. Yaroslav the Wise (in Sweden called Jarisleif) married Ingegerd Olofsdotter of Sweden, daughter of Olof Skötkonung and Slavic Estrid of the Obotrites. Jaroslav gave asylum to Olaf II of Norway and invited Harald III of Norway (Harald Hårdråde) who married Jaroslavs daughter Elisabeth of Kiev. Even Olav Tryggvason in and Magnus I of Norway sought refuge house Rurik genera, in Novgorod. According to Adam of Bremen, was Anund Gårdske, of the Rus in Kiev elected king of Sweden, about 1070, but aside by vote of the Swedes because he refused to participate in the king's traditional idols at the temple in Uppsala, a fate that also beföll Inge the Elder 1084 . Vladimir II Monomakh married Gytha of Wessex (ca. 1055-ca 1100), daughter of England's dane anglo saxon King Harold Godwinson of the House of Wessex. Mother of Valdemar the Great (1131-1182) of Denmark was Ingeborg of Kiev, daughter of Vladimir II Monomachs son Mstislav I and Christina Inge, daughter of Inge Stenkilsson and Helen of Östergötland. Yaroslav the Wise Jarisleif is probably from Finland because the names Jari and Leif are common there. Funny name Harald Hårdråde means Harald Hard Ruler:)

Well Where did the FIRST tsar of Russia came from? Apparently you lot had a hand in it!!! Rurik or Riurik (Old Church Slavonic: Рюрик, from Rørik, the Old East Norse form of the name Roderick; c. 830 – c. 879) was a legendary Varangian chieftain who gained control of Ladoga in 862, built the Holmgard settlement near Novgorod, and founded the Rurik Dynasty, which ruled Kievan Rus (and later Grand Duchy of Moscow and Tsardom of Russia) until the 17th century. |

According to what little real history has survived, Ragnar gets thrown into a pit of snakes by the nasty English King. But the TV version may not go down that path. Vikings on TV. Do you mean History Channel 2? Well.... I have only seen season 1. But some traditions are true. For instances burial ceromonies and that the wife had to stay home when the Vikings went on tour. They Always went on tour in the summer when there where a LOT of farming work to be done. |

Nobody ever asked the Vikings to come. They just show up one day like the loony relatives everyone of has. Hi cousin, we decided to spend a month with you this year for vacation:) Some relatives leave with the silver. I know first hand. The wife and I watch that show also. I kept saying i dont believe they killed the star of the show off. As I haven't studied Viking history.I wonder how accurate the time line is for the show? I do know that Normandy was descedents of the vikings,So I wonder if Rollo is the start of that clan in real life? [/quote]Old James |

I think the vikings had something to do with it. Yes they did:) Rurik or Rjurik, born about 800, died about 879, was, according to the Kiev Nestors Chronicle a viking said to be the founder of Kievan Rus and the progenitor of the PRINCELY HOUSE who ruled until 1598. According to the vast majority of historians, both in Sweden and internationally Rurik was from Sweden. But that Vikings came and stayed is very true. Finland, Russia, England, Greenland, Normandy and Newfoundland:) Newfoundland was called by the vikings Vinland meaning Grape Land because the climate was warmer then today:) |

Hi cousin, we decided to spend a month with you this year for vacation:) You forgot to add James that when the loony relatives turn up they leave without taking the silver and your Jewls but the Viking used to take the silver and then say "see ya bro were coming back next year bye " At least that is what happens on Vikings on Tv . King Ragnar Lothbrok , oww Loki is in big trouble as Ragnar tells Looki , you killed Athelstan. Man I love that show can't wait till next season

Russia is a mystery to us westerns. Our country has fought 33 wars against Russia during the ages. One time helping Ukriane against Peter the Great. Russia is a VERY xenophobic country. On the other hand Finland as well... And there "history"... The very name Rossia suggest a very funny thing. It has do with rows:):)::) And strong leaders in the history. Well Where did the FIRST tsar of Russia came from? He is called Rurik and he is the father of all tsars until Romanov took over. |

Three western myths about Russia that it is time to refute. No, just the people with all the money dream of 'escaping'. And with that I mean park all their money on offshore accounts and have a house somewhere in London in the case they somehow piss off someone with more power and they need to get out or risk prison. The second myth is based on the country is on the brink of collapse. Not a myth, Russia has been on the brink ever since it got founded. Its existence is more of a miracle than a certainty. In a sense, Russia is a bit of a historical anomaly. Its possibly one of the only countries where we 'great person' history applies. Normally countries evolve because of impersonal forces, like economics, ideological movements, etc. But not Russia. Its literally a country that behaved like its Tsar. If they had a competent Tsar, Russia prospered, if they had an idiot, it declined. Tsars modernized the country, or they stopped all progress right in its tracks. Impersonal forces only mattered in as far as they made the Tsar react to them. The reason why Russians love their strong leaders so much is because they are a necessity. The Russian concept of 'nation' is somewhat unique in its xenophobia. It only exists when invaded by foreigners. Which is why Russian politicians often use the threat of foreign invasion for internal political matters, its the only way of keeping the country together. But it only takes one weakling, one politician who fails to appreciate this fact, and the whole thing collapses. Separatists will split off their tiny republics and Russia is no more. |

Three western myths about Russia that it is time to refute. The first myth about Russia is that no immigrants come to the country and that all citizen dreams of escaping Russia for good. The second myth is based on the country is on the brink of collapse. The third myth that Western media tend to spread as actively involves the Russians would like to become Americans, although they would prefer to keep their felt boots and fur hat with ear flaps. |

Are EU cracking up? If you think that South Sudan is the world's youngest state, then you are way off:) Free Republic of Liberland The new state has an area of only seven square kilometers, but has already received membership applications from tens of thousands of people. According to the state's founder and current president Vit Jedlicka has neither Serbia or Croatia claimed the territory Gornja Siga. According to him, the Liberland violates no national boundaries. Former Czech Vit Jedlicka is a member of free citizens party that is critical of modern Europe. He formed the new government in protest. Liberland already has a flag, arms and motto (Live and let live). The new government has also started a website and a Facebook page. So far, already 250,000 people applied for the Liberland's citizenship. Currently prospective citizens are selected. Liberland's gate is closed for the Nazis, communists and criminals. The state also requires absolute respect for private property. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liberland Motto: ŽÃt a nechat žÃt To live and let live http://liberland.org/en/main/ |

Finlands immigration is VERY low. Most of them comes from Europe. According to Statistics Finland, 31,940 persons immigrated to Finland from foreign countries during 2013. The number is 660 higher than in the previous year and the highest during Finland's independence. Emigration from Finland also increased slightly and was 13,890 persons. During 2013, net immigration totalled 18,050 persons, which is 620 up on the year before. Net immigration by foreign citizens increased somewhat, or by 530 persons. Now this happen:) Helsinki has elected two immigrant candidates to parliament. Nasima Razymar and Ozan Yanar are not the first MPs born elsewhere, but they represent a different wave of immigration to those that preceded them. http://yle.fi/uutiset/two_immigrant_mps_heading_to_parliament/7939744 Social Democrat Nasima Razmyar and Green Ozan Yanar are set to take their places in parliament after Sunday's election. The two become the only immigrant legislators in the next parliament, with the exception of Sweden-born independent Elisabeth Nauclér, who represents the semi-autonomous maritime province of Åland. |

This is funny and not myths:) Pyramiden (meaning "the pyramid" in most Scandinavian languages; called Пирамида, Piramida, in Russian) is a Russian settlement and coal mining community on the archipelago of Svalbard, Norway. Founded by Sweden in 1910 and sold to the Soviet Union in 1927, Pyramiden was closed in 1998 and has since remained largely abandoned with most of its infrastructure and buildings still in place. Russia Deputy PM Dmitry Rogozin suddenly turned up today on Norwegian Svalbard. In spite of visa ban. On his way to the North Pole. And Norwegians snowmobile here carry the tourists to explore the "Soviet heritage" Since when was Svalbard Soviet? https://twitter.com/Rogozin/status/589355065892327424 The Russians have destroyed the delicate Arctic environment with a Lenin statue. Pyramiden: world's most Northerly Lenin bust in front of the sports center btw Rogozon is the man who said a year ago "US can send there astronauts to the ISS with a trampoline" Give him undercooked polar bear meat infected with Trichinella... |
