It slows down crunching:-( Not by a lot, but slow down it does..

Sure, I never argued that. I only argued the original claim that running the graphic or screen saver somehow screws up crunching. Screws up, to me, means destroys or causes errors.

The only thing that I was pointing out was that running the visualization was cpu intensive.

I never made any claim that it would "screw up" any crunching.

No, you weren't the one that made the claim that it would screw up crunching. Cliff did in Message 1661073. It's not a big deal though. It was just an idea.

On some setups an increase in cpu usage will cause a slow down in gpu crunching.

Sure. But if you want to display the graphics, you need to make a decision on which is more important to you. Me? I'm totally willing to give up crunching power for some eye candy. Eye candy often makes other people ask questions and generates interest. I started crunching SETI@home only because I saw a co-worker running the screen saver on his machine back in 2001. I probably would have never known about this project without the eye candy.

To each their own I suppose. Again, it was just an idea.

Hi OzzFan,

Ahh, so desu:-) That's the trouble with a English as a common language:-) It provides so many meanings for the same word.

So then display the website graphic when you're not crunching. I don't know man... I was just trying to suggest an alternative idea to be helpful without requiring someone to re-do it as a screensaver that likely isn't going to happen. It is a cool graphic and I think displaying it on a screen is a great idea. I was suggesting how you can make it happen.

Nay prob's as the scots would say:-)

Cheers,
Cliff,

Hi

I joined this project in 1999 and have left several times and came back several times obviously. I just built my first computer and installed a decent GPU. I heard about where SETI made good use of GPU's and decided to rejoin. The number of work units compared to 1999 and now that can be done almost seems to follow Moores law. I do more in an hour now than I did in a week when I started.

Anyways the reason I posted is the transmission visual page is awesome. It really shows how global this project is and how much information is sent and received. I am awed by whoever thought this up and coded it. Just plain awesome. I would think that a real time page of this would be super useful. You could actually visualize when SETI was slowing down uploads. Maybe even give MB's & AP's a different color. I know how crunchers love AP's and seeing them being delivered would be huge.

Again Thanks. I am proud be again be a part of this project and hope to get more active and involved in keeping the momentum strong.

Bob

The industrialized countries send most data, I have noticed that too. Africa, Russia and Canada are as good as blank.

Most of Canada's population is in a strip about 100 miles wide on the coasts and along the US border, and if you watch for long enough, you see tasks and results coming from those areas. There are large areas of the US that don't register many data transfers, either.

I thought there would be a lot more users in the Asian countries too.

And yea, up here in Canada we need a lot of solar panels on our igloo's to run Seti, LMAO

What would be nice to see on the map is .... Data set starting at 18:00 UTC. That should be an easy add.

Just so everyone knows if its current or not.

...Matt's caption says it all:
during a 5 minute period within the last 24 hours

And looking at the data flow as I type I'd say it certainly within the last 24 hours....

Visualisation would look better with Mac users included... how come we're not getting any work units at the moment?

It is in this post from Matt Lebofsky
http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/forum_thread.php?id=76852&postid=1662650#1662650

Looks like the Science DB is fubared for a bit, they are working on fix now.
Hopefully by the end of the day they get it up & running again. Lots of Crunchers are having to move to other projects in the meantime.

I used to have a link to a screen that showed the SETI communications line utilization in graphic form. I had a computer crash and lost that link.

Can someone post it please?

thanks
