Over the weekend a false news report from a known source of false news reports reported that we had detected an extraterrestrial signal. Of course, if we had, known sources of real news reports would also be carrying the story. In other words, no such luck. @SETIEric@qoto.org (Mastodon) |

[joke] Hm... reverse psychology April Fools? Preemptively saying reports are false.. to cover up the fact that it might actually be truuue? :p [/joke] I just thought that was a funny thought. Future thought for you guys though.. if you DO end up finding something in the data.. the perfect day to announce it would be April 1. Some would believe it, others would be highly skeptical, it would draw lots of attention to it anyway.. and then the following days, those that were skeptical will find out that it was indeed legitimate. It would spread throughout social media like a viral hoax.. and then actually turn out to be real. I think that's a great plan. Eric didn’t specify the source of the article and a cursory web search didn't turn up any matching hits – so I forgot about it. Today (Thursday morning 4-2-15, EDT) this popped up on Drudge: http://www.newscientist.com/article/mg22630153.600-is-this-et-mystery-of-strange-radio-bursts-from-space.html?full=true#.VR0f1JOAfPY Might this be the article Eric had in mind? |

http://www.newscientist.com/article/mg22630153.600-is-this-et-mystery-of-strange-radio-bursts-from-space.html?full=true#.VR0f1JOAfPY I wouldn't call New Scientist a "known source of false news reports". New Scientist is a very credible magazine and a great source of scientific facts. It was also posted on their website after Eric made his post which referenced the previous weekend. |

Well, According to the following article published March 30, 2015 : the High Energy Physics Group, Department of Physics and Astronomy, University of Hawaii (which apparently does not cooperate with SETI, or what?) analyzed on some signals at Institute for Data Analysis, Germany in cooperation with the Max- Planck - Institut fur Kernphysik, Germany. These signals include the so-called Fast Radio Bursts (FRBs) observed in a systematic range, which probably origns from a human or non- human source . Therefore , I think that this article is the cause of rumors about a new WOW signal : http://arxiv.org/pdf/1503.05245v2.pdf[/url] Listening in and trying to help. www.logitmark.dk |

Yes, Eric was referring to the WNDR article. Didn't want to give them the benefit of sending them extra traffic by posting a link. The New Scientist article on the other hand is interesting, although the latest reports suggest that the pattern may not persist when new bursts are added to the analysis: http://phenomena.nationalgeographic.com/2015/04/02/mathematical-pattern-found-in-enigmatic-radio-bursts-but-its-not-e-t/ |

Thanx Dr. Steve Croft We can only hope to see some published data of the FRB's, and then try to decide whether or not they come from E.T. ;-) I hope to see you on the 18.th of May, where I'll be visiting SSL :-) Sincerely Mickey Logitmark Listening in and trying to help. www.logitmark.dk |

What a shame. However, I could send you an original picture of one that apparently surrounds me. Taken with a cannon digital camera by a relative in California. Let me know if I can send it through to you via whatsapp or some other communication. You might like this. I send a message to someone else regarding this photo and a couple others. There is no fix to this. Jackie |
