Message 1658408 - Posted: 28 Mar 2015, 21:18:40 UTC

Here we go again, the same old faces demanding the politics board is shut down.

There's only one problem that needs fixing which will clear up many issues on these boards - Deactivate the PM system.

There is more trouble instigated via that than there is flaming/baiting on the boards.

More B/S & serious issues occur in real life behind closed doors - what makes one think it does not on Net boards?

I'll repeat what I said on the last "Annual Event" - this board is much more humorous than what the Café ever will.

What, another temper tantrum because pushing the red-x isn't getting the result you want?

Life doesn't work that way.

Frankly without politics, the cafe, number crunching and the rest will have to be closed as well PDQ. People will post what they want period the end.

Spend a little time on World Community Grid and you will find out how boring this place will become if you don't allow politics. I think most of not all users understand if you don't want a bloody nose you don't post in politics. Even in politics you need to stay on topic so it's possible to post in politics without getting into a argument you don't want. This is the only open thread board I post on and it will be greatly missed by me if it is shut down. Something not measured is there are many people who read our post without ever posting. The way I know this is every once in a while a person make their first post and they understand far more than a first time poster should. There has to be a reason why SETi seems to have more computer power than other Boinc boards and I think this s part of it.

The other point is the people who post on this board are well educated even if it's self educated. They want to explore ideas with other educated people that are beyond the limits of the Cafe. SETI has kind of a natural filter along with the mods that keep the anarchist out or at least under control.

NO, it's the ignore button that keeps that anarchist under control.

We have the anarchist tinted posts in the Cafe, but they are quite eloquently transformed into polite and agreeable 'arguments':))

NO, it's the ignore button that keeps that anarchist under control.

And It should result in that ignored person disappearing from the world view entirely. That is the real problem here, not the politics forum.

I believe it would be a fool's errand to shut down 'politics'.

I don't post here much myself. Mostly because I at times don't consider myself educated enough to participate in some of the debates here. Opinionated, yes. Educated, perhaps not enough.

I do read more than I post here. And take much of it with a grain of salt, as I understand that emotional levels are allowed to run higher here than otherwise, and a lot of hormones are released into the surrounding atmosphere...LOL.

I Think this is weird.
SETI starts a political forum.
OK.
After a more of a decade some would like to shut it down!
Why?
There are so much nonsense, personal attacks and so called foul language here.
Are Moral Majority speaking here?
I would say YES.

If a person looks at the threads on other projects (e.g., Rosetta, Einstein,
and CPDN), the responses primarily are in the professional categories, such
as Q&A. Einstein has a poetry thread, but it seems more for submitting
works by established poets.

The participants aren't very interested in "chit-chat". That's ok, with me.

A question, then, comes to mind: How did SETI@home's "chat" columns get
started, and what -- if anything -- differentiates our "crunchers" from those
on other projects? Do the differences have to do with the nature of our
project; i.e., a project with a slim chance of success? Or, a success that
doesn't have much outside support from the general public?

Before terminating any of the "chat" columns, perhaps we should consider
that they might serve a very dedicated sort of person, who, never-the-less,
requires some mutual support (of various types). Most of my friends who
would dedicate a computer for scientific computing, have specific reasons
for doing so; e.g., cancer research (loss of friend, to same).

Nobody, that I know, is involved in SETI, and most of my friends are professionals, of one sort, or another.

Granted, if extra-terrestrial signals should ever be detected, interest
would undoubtedly pick up,even if single-cellular life were detected.

And, I would not be surprised that the additional gain of volunteer crunchers would swamp us original SETI-zens,
to the extent that a question for the need for "chat" boards would, again,
be raised.

I'll worry about that, when it should arrive.

Agreed.

Also, some of us like to post in the politics forum here on seti because we get to hear other views rather than the ones we might come across in our every day life. If you don't hear other views wildly different from your own you can end up thinking that somehow you speak for a supposed "norm" or "average person".

I want to hear other people's opinions. I don't have to agree with them, but there is no where else I've come across like seti for the wide range of opinions.

I do post on other forums totally unrelated to seti. There is quite a range of "how things are done" out there and what different admin tolerate.

I will vote a solid No to closing the polotics forum.
This place is needed. It was formed to to keep the nasty stuff out of the Cafe. And thats why a bit more leeway is giving to vent your spleen in here.
Close it? WHY? Just so you dont get challenged on an opinion? My eyes have been opened by reading this forum. My preconceived notions on many things have me questioning what the hell was I thinking. And it because of this forum!.
Its been asked what the moderators think about this place. As a former Mod myself, No one mod had to walk this beat alone. We had the help of the others and Fred.
And for Milkyway and Einstien those forums are ghost towns.
Ive made many friends on here just beacuse of the forums. Why kill a good thing?
