Prof. Shelley Wright from UC San Diego, working with members of the BSRC team including Dan Werthimer, Andrew Siemion, and Geoff Marcy, successfully achieved first light last weekend on a new instrument to search for pulses of infrared light from extraterrestrial intelligence. This exciting new area of research is highly complementary to our ongoing work using radio telescopes and SETI@home. That's awesome - will the data from this be sent out like seti@home and astropulse to be worked on by everyone?

No, currently it's using a dedicated pipeline. The technical details are at http://www.seti.net/indepth/optical_seti/near-infrared_seti_experiment.pdf

I'd be curious when/if they develop the means to detect communication that might not go through normal space as such, as a means to get around the temporal/special limitations imposed by radio signals traveling at the speed of light.

A long ways off, and really another field of endeavor altogether. But if we could find means to send an object into another dimension (dimensional shift), and transmit the data back to our computers here in the 3rd dimension here on Earth (well this aspect wouldn't be all that different as there would be a transmission of data, for us to go over); it would be interesting if we could create a space probe capable of exploring other dimensions and sending images back to us. Rather then just theorizing from physics, what dimensions are there, and what one might be looking at. Even if we didn't find ET utilizing such means, it could serve to expand our awareness beyond the 3 dimensional universe, we can see today. Essentially penetrate and explore some of those other dimensions; and if per chance some other race thought of this and achieved the technical know how to make it happen, well then....

Ever since Paul Dirac in 1928 developed his equation referring to 'spin' in 1/2 particles, speculation was that an instantaneous communication system could be developed by separating a pair of identical spin particles and placing them in a device at each end of the communication line(like a telephone). Whatever was done to one particle would affect the other 'instantaneously'.

Einstein agreed calling the effect 'spooky action at a distance'.

The entanglement paradox was pointed out by Einstein, Podolsky and Rosen in 1935.Today it is no longer a paradox but a scientific fact. But I don't think it can be used to transmit information.

Two things come to mind. First, to know the pair is entangled you have to have them close and then move them at less than c apart, which may be the saving grace. Second, the kind of information you can transmit is not going to be information in the sense of changing the universe at a distance.

Rather obviously supernova will send entangled pairs flying out all over, so the galaxy should be filled with pairs, perhaps we need to think about what information is in the sense that it can't go faster than c. Does sending the Iliad to the Andromeda galaxy change anything, or only sending something that changes spacetime.

If we hear from ET using this new IR method, will we be able to tell what they are watching on ET-TV, or will we just know that they are channel surfing with an IR remote control? I'll have to dig through some boxes of old hardware to find my old IR-Blaster and perhaps dust off my CW as well.

If aliens were to have received old Morse code transmissions from Earth, and echoed them back towards us, would SETI@Home's algorithms recognize and flag the transmissions?

I honestly do not think so, Greg. They digitize the signal and will return perhaps amplified with algorithms that are still not able to imagine. Although your fancy, reminds me of when I wanted to record a CD with the sign of Arecibo thanks to wu2sah.exe. ;-)

From The Article:

“There is only one downside: the extraterrestrials would need to be transmitting their signals in our direction,” Drake said, though he sees a positive side to that limitation. “If we get a signal from someone who’s aiming for us, it could mean there’s altruism in the universe. I like that idea. If they want to be friendly, that’s who we will find.”

Hi,

I read Drake, and many others (including The Bible, The Qur'aan and of course, Genesis and the Book of Revelations [16:8]. I'm an evolutionist, although highly respect all opinions given, but much to have stopped believing in what Carl Sagan and others instilled in me as a child does.

I personally am not "creationist" nor devotee, (it will be on my degenerative disease), but took too long to believe in that not only or "must" be a unique biology for a single recognized intelligence. Moreover, I believe that all species are continuing in their biological evolution as well as the planet evolves geologically. ;-)

I honestly,
Cris

hi to all a thought ive had for many years about the universe and its makeup i took a passing thought and put some structure to it and now look at that understanding clearly this is that if you take the center of the universe and all matter and elements come from one place there must be a time line and so to find intelligent life in the universe first take the caculation that from the center of the explosion of the big bang and work out that from there to our galexy and to our solar system {using our galexy as the caculatable point from before and after} means that all galexy's that came before us are still developing and those after us further towards the outa edge of the universe are more developed than us as this must be the case as the time needed for development as shown by our own development takes x ammount of years so you can theorise that our own development can be caculated to show roughly where we should be looking for intelegent life based on the premis as to our own development and the phical point in the universe that we are at now uterlising both placement and time line projected both ahead and behind and that at any stage of development the feelings that we have when we ask the questions such as should we intefere with a lesser developed civerlisation might be in actual fact that might be being asked by a higher more developed civerlisation but where to look now is becoming more structured so to re cap if we wanted to see dinosaurs we might look back to a galexy that is behind ours and closer to the big bang and then for a more advance race to look at a galexy that is further ahead from ours plus the time line can be caculated by caculating the apparent distances between the galexys both ahead and those behind so after this posting i look forward to hearing your views and thank you for reading

Do you really think that anyone will read this stream of lowercase letters ...

Just be grateful they’re not all uppercase.

For me, makes no difference. MEGO sets in about the second line of text without punctuation. Not going to give myself a headache trying to read it.
