We all know the Problems that so ever arise on the SETI DC Project on a frequent basis. How does SETI use its funding. What is the average Donation. How much would it take to pull SETI out the S*** and finally how much is a £50 and separately a £300 donation valued in SETI's eyes.

Any and every donation is valued highly.
Even if only $10.00, $20.00, or $50.00, that is more than most ever send.

LOTS of less worthy endeavors are paid for in that manor. A well written proposal might surprise everyone with the results.

FYI Bitcoin Utopia recently held a major fundraising effort that raised approx $1,000 via Bitcoin Mining using Boinc. I would think there would be a way to reopen it to keep a steady, sizeable donation coming?

Well I've just made my first donation to SETI@Home. I honestly do not think it in its self will make much difference but I hop it helps. Can someone tell me what happens now. I read all the information about getting the Donner badge ECT: but unsure when it will be authorized. or what to expect if anything!

Or even into the wrong branch of SETI. The whole stalemate between the SETI Institute and SETI@Berkeley - which feels like a standoff between rutting egos - needs to be resolved. Not saying that the SETI Institute approach is wrong, but that there should be scope for both - and a few crumbs from the rich man's table wouldn't go amiss.

The reason I was asking was I was going to make a donation but wasn't sure how it would of been spent. Nothing much I would of thought. £50 at the most. But it would of been on a regular basis.

If you could manage that Spud, that would be really marvellous. And can I also suggest that you contact Dr Korpela with the offer, and I am completely sure that he will be very happy to tell you what it will go towards.

Those who are interested and can afford it do donate, anyone outside the crunching family is unlikely to be interested.

We need more publicity, in a good sense. We darn well need more publicity than CERN because We're actually searching for knowledge outside the narrowness of our human mind! It's really frustrating for a Seti fan to watch all the funds go into the wrong sciences..

Has there ever been an effort at 'crowd funding'?

Crowd-funding, just like all previous forms of fund-raising, tends to favour novel start-ups at the cutting edge.

Whether you're approaching philanthropic foundations, business corporations, research councils, national or state governments - even wealthy individuals - the response tends to be warmer for 'pilot projects', demonstration schemes, proofs of concept, blue-skies thinking - call it what you like, but ongoing day-to-day management and maintenance of a middle aged research project (15 years is a long time) is much less attractive.

Even though I worked professionally in this field before retirement, I don't know what the answer is - and my experience was all in the UK, so not directly applicable to the USA, which I suspect is most likely to fund a project likely to be identified as "one of our own". But it's a question well worth asking, and the more suggestions the merrier - while remembering that the ideal target is a source of reliable, continuing revenue, rather than sudden bursts with lean periods in between.

dg - Periodically the GPUG has raised money for specific hardware. As far as I can see these fund raisers have been quite successful in hitting their targets.
