Message 1648127 - Posted: 1 Mar 2015, 8:03:25 UTC

Windows 7; latest BOINC Manager; latest SETI@home software.

A few days ago I wanted to make a complete system backup, so I let all downloaded units process by setting No New Tasks (I didn't want to restore old units if it ever comes to a restore).

After completing the backup, I set it back to New Tasks, but no new tasks would download. Something like 'No new tasks available' was displayed.

Have we finished processing all available units, or is there something wrong with my system?

But my Lenovo doesn't ... My Extreme can't ...

No one except you knows which of your computers you call "Lenovo" and which "Extreme":
http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/hosts_user.php?userid=9785864

Refer to them by ID# if you want people to understand what you mean

One of the computers have many 'Abandoned' tasks:
http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/results.php?hostid=7511682

If you try to 'fix' Download problems (which are on the servers now) by 'Reset' of project - 'Reset' obviously will not help at all.

Calling someone a dunce who is trying to explain to you that we cannot see computer names... and even I thought "Extreme" was what you named your computer, and not the type of processor installed in the system... is incredibly rude.

Considering the word "extreme" is an industry buzzword, it could mean the model of your motherboard, the model of a computer purchased, the type of sport you play, the type of CPU in your computer... because not all of us are on the same wavelength of thought. We're used to people coming into the help forum and start mentioning computer brand names, or computer names... all information which we cannot see or easily distinguish.

I also don't refer to my Intel Extreme processors as "extreme" by name, and if I do, I call it by the model number followed by "extreme" to indicate to my audience that I am referring to the processor model and not, for example, an Asus Extreme motherboard that I may have built my computer around.

I was running another BOINC project since I couldn't get any SETI@home work units.

However, when I came to my computer this morning, it was happily running SETI@home again.

Problem solved, I guess.

Dear Dunce,
The Exteme in the intel Sandy Bridge Extreme The lenovo td a W520.

Hi Dear Dunce (is Dear your first name or surname?)

I really don't care about Intel or Lenovo trade names and don't intend to search the very "informative" phrase "td a W520" (???)

""No one except you knows which of your computers you call "Lenovo" and which "Extreme":

It should make no difference. Everything here is running the preview (9929) and is a high level Windows machine. I am receiving no work no matter which machine.
If it does make a difference, the Lenovo is a W520 and the extreme is a Sandy bridge extreme. They both are in a homegroup, both are on the net and neither is receiving work. They are both on a shared router to the net. Both are able to see the net and both have 16 gigs of memory and no load. This note was was written by the Extreme.

The error is am receiving is, "Boink is not running".

Ok, that's the lenovo. Why has it not connected? It doesn't have an external firewall.

It may have the windows firewall on...

Turning the firewall off is very insecure, you're inviting all free-living virii and Trojans out there onto your system now, so just turn it back on. BOINC is designed to go trigger the Windows firewall the very first time it starts up, so that's been done already.

So questions:
Is BOINC running?
What does Windows Task Manager->Processes tab say? Any boinc.exe in the processes list?
If it isn't running, make sure to start it (Start->All Programs->BOINC->BOINC Manager).

Again, if it doesn't contact the project, you can ask why not but all any of us can then answer is that we do not know. You may have a clue, as you can read BOINC its messages. The Event Log, remember? CTRL+SHIFT+E to open it, if need be post an excerpt of it here. Preferably from the start of the messages.

Sorry, I am not a volunteer moderator here. If you prefer to be only helped by the volunteer moderators, best say so and I'll drop out as well.
Do know that the help everyone here gets is from other users.
Do also know that the moderators here are other users. They do not work at Berkeley, they cannot check anything at the server if need be.

Jord,
I didn't have an opportunity to say that the extreme has Bullguard on it....running.

I have no preferences at all.... I recognize that I need help and don't know why.

"So questions:
Is BOINC running? "

It running on the lenovo. Seti@home was taking 100% of obe cpu on the extreme so I shut it down and will have to reinstall it later. (Another long story)

"What does Windows Task Manager->Processes tab say? Any boinc.exe in the processes list?"
On the lenovo, I see it running and it looks quite normam but it has no work.

If it isn't running, make sure to start it (Start->All Programs->BOINC->BOINC Manager).

"Again, if it doesn't contact the project, you can ask why not but all any of us can then answer is that we do not know. You may have a clue, as you can read BOINC its messages. i'll be right back. I'll get them messages. THIS IS THE LENOVO.
