It was in either my freshman or second year of high school. As I indicated earlier, I was already quite disconnected and distant from everybody around me. This made me an individual, rather than 'one of them', and singled me out. I was not 'them', I was 'him'......and therefore a target. This came to a head one day when a scene much out of 'Christine' came to pass. One of the big jocks was passing by when I was getting my stuff out of my locker and just on a whim, decided to slam it shut. With my finger getting mangled a bit in the process. And then proceeded with the poke in the ribs bit.........if you know what being poked in the ribs is to a high strunger, you might understand what came next. I whipped around by reflex, and promptly cold-cocked him and broke his nose. I have always had cat-like reflexes...type A, very nervous, you know what I mean, always on edge. Well, word got around that I had broken the nose of the top jock, and things got worse for the rest of my high school years. Nobody would challenge me after that, but nobody wanted to talk to me either. I had one skinny little gurl that I was kinda sweet on, but she was verbally so abused for associating with me that she took off too. So, I just retreated further within. I had a select group of friends I hung with and it was good 'hangin' again. I also was reminded why I was selective and avoided others.
