Yes, unless a lot of what we see in science fiction turns out to be buildable I fear we are stuck here alone in our little corner of the universe.

The whales are much smarter than humans. Our curiousity makes us the inquisitive minds we are at present which is not bad to begin with but when trying to communicate with intelligent extraterrestrial life we should always remain humble.
