Exciting if we hear something. ET, is that you? Scientists launch plan to beam welcome messages to far-off star systems - and their planets which could bear life Scientists are making plans to beam messages from Earth out into the universe, effectively cold-calling the solar system to find signs of other life. Astronomers will transmit signals from radio telescopes to hundreds of other star systems in the hope of making groundbreaking discoveries. The plan, put together by scientists at the Seti (Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence) Institute in California, has been trumpeted as a major step in humanity's exploration of space. http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sciencetech/article-2944581/ET-Scientists-launch-plan-beam-welcome-messages-far-star-systems-planets-bear-life.html |

I have new admiration for Stephen Hawking, since seeing the movie "The Theory of Everything". From the article: Stephen Hawking warned inviting aliens to the planet could be dangerous The fact is we really have no idea what lurks out in space. His statement could be true or not. If they ever did show up and were dangerous, might be a bit mind boggling. As mind boggling as it sounds, they could be friendly, and we would be the dangerous ones. |

The paramount obstacle to any contacts, would involve accommodating to foreign micro-organisms. By the time any contact is made, hopefully, we will have become much more advanced in the fields of parasitology, medicine, and other relevant fields. |

If most human don't like "cold calls", why do you think aliens will be different? :/ non-profit org. Play4Life in Zagreb, Croatia, EU |

I'm not so sure we should be intentionally announcing our presence to the galaxy. Bob DeWoody My motto: Never do today what you can put off until tomorrow as it may not be required. This no longer applies in light of current events. |

I fully agree with Sten and Bob. I said much the same in This has probably been asked a thousand times..., and was met with much opposition from PwNz0R that he could not possibly conceive an alien race as traveling across the cosmos just to kill us. Quite worrisome, his position. :-/ |

If there is an alien species out there who runs contrary to the "default position of the egghead set"* and is both technologically sophisticated enough that we have no chance of defeating them, and are still merciless usurpers of other species' planets, then it's too late already to cower in the dark, as they would also be sophisticated enough that our leakage of everything from morse code crackles to thousands of simultaneous digital video broadcasts has been whetting their appetites for a century. *Contact, 1997 |

Agreed, but a century is such a short time, astronomically speaking. |

Too true. I'm ok with those broadcasts which won't make it very far out anyway, than with an active, high powered signal beamed to a specific point saying "we're over here!" |

A statement on this just went on the main page with an associated thread. I recognize three of the signatories are from this project (Andrew P. V. Siemion, Eric J. Korpela, Dan Werthimer). |

Oh no, do NOT beam any messages to far-off systems, with any directional beams, and/or with high signal strength. It's exactly why we very far from interstellar traveling. Natural selection in action. Only civilizations that not think like this could accumulate enough resources for such advancement. Civilizations like humans can only hear space silence and dream about conquers... being not able to explore even own star system fully. Time to evolve, peoples! |

I have new admiration for Stephen Hawking, since seeing the movie "The Theory of Everything". Dr. Hawking has a very prudent mind. Because of his physical condition and his constant intertwinement with technology. My opinion is, the ones who do make it here are intelligent enough to not destroy anything. That would be a 'privilege' reserved for the human kind only for the moment:( rOZZ Music Pictures |

In order to be a threat to us, a supposed hostile extraterrestrial species would need the ability to travel interstellar distances. Such an ability seems to imply their managing the less technically demanding feat of receiving our routine, non-directed radio, radar and television signals. As we have already realized, by using the focusing effect of the gravity of the local star, such signals could be received from throughout the galaxy. The fact that we have not been conquered or destroyed by such a civilization, even though many of them would presumably have had a million or a billion year head start on us, seems to argue against this danger. |

That would explain why they wouldn't involve themselves in any low vibratory activity, on a quantum scale. rOZZ Music Pictures |

Dr Seth Shostak says we should be trying to make contact with aliens We should teach aliens about CRICKET: ET wants to hear about our culture and not our views on science, says director of Seti Dr Seth Shostak says we should be trying to make contact with aliens To do so we could send them lots of information about our culture For example, by sending the internet, they could learn the rules of cricket Experts have been listening to try and hear an alien signal for decades Now, some are suggesting we should broadcast, rather than just listen But while some say we should make contact, others like Professor Hawking have warned against doing so in the past However, Dr Shostak says that if we don't we might miss our chance to make contact - as aliens might think we are not advanced enough http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sciencetech/article-2951184/We-teach-aliens-CRICKET-ET-wants-hear-culture-not-views-science-says-Director-Seti.html |

For example, by sending the internet, they could learn the rules of cricket LOL, that should be enough to keep them away. |
