SOS Smör, Ost, Sill:)
A yummy appetizer or snack with a funny name. Put sliced potatoes, pickled herring, onions and cheese sticks. Pour over some melted butter. Sprinkle with chives and eat good S.O.S. instantly!

You lost me at pickled herring. Everything else sounds good on a shingle.

Then if you visit Sweden or Finland in the midsummer fest you will get hungry:)
Or perhaps Swedish Midsommar Festival Battery Park New Jersey in Jun 19, 2015.

On Friday we start the fest and dances around the midsummer pole for three days like the vikings did.

Grant i too love SOS! Dried, Chipped beef is one of the under rated food groups....... ":D

Well DG, I have had it 2 ways and one is chiped beef and the other is with hamburger. You go out in the morning it was a good stick to your ribs meal until lunch. Hamburger was my best for this.

Funny I had powdered eggs in the Army and must say YUCK let me tell you give me SOS any day of the week for breakfast.

Add salt and pepper to taste while they are being cooked, otherwise, yeah some can be that way. Of course the egg shortage has driven the prices up past $70 a can in some places, I'm used to $22 something..

Sauerkraut, My Mom cooked that once, She had to blanch that quite a bit, it was actually quite tasty, She added sliced sausages to that, yes I did the slicing. I'm not familiar with the other three.

Oh I see, Sauerbraten is a type of pot roast, I've had pot roast, lets see Knoedel(dumplings), I've had those too, Rotkraut(red cabbage), I've not had that, though She did cook red beets, with some margarine and cut with some white vinegar to taste, just like one would do with spinach or swiss/red chard.

Sauerkraut goes well with a hot-dog. Topped with ketchup and mustard. Good stuff, especially when watching a soccer game which I used to do so much as a kid. My third stepfather was a trainer and ex soccer player himself.

Sauerkraut goes well with a hot-dog.

They serve a 'Krautdog' at both the Football and Baseball stadiums here. Yum!. My mother used to serve sauerkraut and applesauce as side dishes with baked pork chops. Also Yum!

When I went to NYC at the time I hadn't had a good hog dog in years and this food cart had hot dogs and sauerkraut, it was like heaven.

One of my favorite things to do is stuff bell peppers. They're tasty containers for leftovers, or anything you dream up.

Made my first ever "Cajun Chicken Gumbo" tonight.

Good thing it is absolutely delicious because I will be eating it for a week. It was an awfully big pot full.

No my recipe did not have ocra in it and I only heard about ocra a few months ago. I'de never heard of it or seen it in Oz but after a bit of googling I find they have it in some supermarkets.

I've never heard of gumbo accept in an American movie or something like that. I was wondering does gumbo have a meaning or is it a word like stew?

Edit- speling And sometimes American things are extremely alien to us Aussies, even though we share a common language. Especially some foods that we have never seen .

Gumbo is the word for okra in Creole. In Louisiana they have lots of Creole culture.
Gumbo is providing the vegetable stew its consistency. Fillet gumbo is a spice of saffron leaves that provide both flavor and texture. The foundation of a true gumbo is a dark stew - en roux (red) - and the Holy Trinity onion-celery-green pepper.
